Electric wheeldrives

Off-road electric wheeldrives from The Cincinnati Gear Co. are available for some of the world's largest mining trucks. The electric wheel gear unit is standard equipment for all of Terex's 360-ton-capacity MT 5500 trucks. These ac-powered units provide the truck with higher torque capabilities at low speeds with increased overall performance and efficiency. They feature a planetary-geartrain design with high-capacity wheel bearings and high-strength alloy steel casting. Rated power for the device is 1056 kW (1400 hp) with a wheel speed of 91 rpm. The firm is working to develop a series of reliable, compact, ac wheeldrives for both large and small trucks.

Racing sterndrive engine

The HP575 Sci is the first Mercury Racing engine to feature both supercharging and fuel injection. An advanced-technology throttle body fuel-injection system, matched with a custom 256 CID Holley/Weiand Super Charger, provides sport boaters with a broad torque band throughout the engine's operating range. The 502 CID engine also delivers turnkey starting, instant throttle response, and improved idle stability for easier docking. The 8.2 L GM cylinder block is equipped with heavy-duty parts, including forged crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons. The 575 Sci uses the MEFI 3 engine-control system. This system monitors conditions including rpm levels, manifold pressure, air temperature, water temperature, and throttle position. A one-piece serpentine belt system requires less power to drive the engine accessories.

Volvo industrial engine

Volvo Penta's six-cylinder D12 engine features high output and low emissions levels in a compact size. Fuel consumption is 6% lower than the engines the D12 replaces. The engine-management-system (EMS) control system provides sharply improved control of the engine's operations and performance. The system is also designed for total integration with the machine or equipment the engine is driving. The engine responds immediately to changes in load. Each cylinder is monitored separately, and, since the D12 series uses unit injectors, each cylinder can be controlled separately. The EMS also enables engine adaptation to specific applications with great precision. The series includes engines for mobile applications such as forklift trucks, container lifters, and agricultural machinery, as well as certain stationary applications such as pumps, stone crushers, and conveyers.

Deere Tier 2 engines

John Deere Power Systems has developed engines that meet Tier 2 emissions regulations, which apply to engines over 300 hp (225 kW). This includes all PowerTech 12.5-L engines and the new 242-kW (325-hp), 8.1-L engine. These engines must meet the EU Stage II regulations by January 1, 2002. EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II standards for lower-power engines will be phased in through January 1, 2004. These engines include the John Deere 2.9-L, 4.5-L, and 6.8-L engines, as well as the remainder of the 8.1-L models. The entire off-highway diesel engine line covers 37 to 373 kW (50 to 500 hp). Any increases in heat rejection and fuel consumption resulting from efforts to meet Tier 2 emissions levels have been minimized. For ease of installation and to minimize changeover costs, there are no significant changes to external dimensions.

On-off solenoid

Thomas Magnete USA LLC's on-off solenoid was designed and developed for brake-booster assistance. In case of emergencies or panic braking, which is often characterized by a rapid pressing of the pedal, the on-off solenoid of the brake-assistance device is activated by a control signal. The principal operation of the design functions where the solenoid is activated and the coil is overexcited. Simultaneously, the magnetic armature electrically opens the vacuum valve in the brake booster. Complete braking pressure is then attained. After the brake assistance device has been released, an integrated microswitch ensures that normal operation is resumed. At that point, there is no sustained brake action, and the vehicle can once again be accelerated. Variations of the vehicle-specific, cable-harness design enable the system to be directly installed and connected in a short time period.
