Fuel catalyst

The Fitch Fuel Catalyst from Advanced Power Systems International is a permanent fuel-treatment device that increases power and fuel economy while reducing emissions in self-propelled outdoor power equipment. According to the company, the catalyst works equally well with both two- and four-cycle equipment. It does not dissolve and is not absorbed by the fuel, inducing an electrochemical reaction on the degraded elements of fuel to increase the percentage of higher energy fuel properties. With improved combustion, there is a noticeable decrease in noxious fumes and smoke.


Yanmar's liquid-cooled diesels

Yanmar Diesel America Corp.'s TNE liquid-cooled diesel engine lineup includes 16 models ranging from 7.5 to 84 kW (10 to 113 hp). The engines are indirect and direct injected (depending on engine model) and feature high thermal efficiency and improved mountability in various applications. Durability is enhanced due to improved block cooling, stiffer crank and pistons, and tighter tolerances on key components. The engines run extra clean due to "semi open deck construction." When combined with super-thin full metal head gasket and high top piston ring design, this construction means that dead spaces and cool air pockets—a major source of unburned exhaust gasses—are reduced. Additionally, the water galleries are improved to cool further any hot spots in the piston area of the block, and swirl characteristics are improved in and around the combustion chamber.


Plug-and-play cable

Radox Multiplex Cable, Champlain Cable's latest controlled impedance databus cable, meets all requirements of SAE J1939-11. The cable supports the multiplexing network protocol while meeting all physical and mechanical requirements. Resistant to harsh chemicals and fluids in the powertrain, this rugged cable retains its controlled impedance characteristics even after bending and routing and maintains an environmental seal with standard connectors. With a rating of 150°C (302°F) continuous operation and the ability to withstand temperatures beyond 240°C (464°F), the cable can be routed closer to hot spots in the engine.


Sintered connecting rods

Federal Mogul Sintered Products manufactures warm-compacted, sintered connecting rods, which will go into series production in 2002 for various European engines. The sintered connecting rods offer the same performance as wrought steel or powder forged steel rods, but at lower cost, and have shown good results in engine tests such as overspeed, cycle, power max, and torque/power max. Finite-element analysis calculations have helped to optimize the rod's design and reliability.


Scania's 16-L V8 engine

The DC16 industrial engine from the Industrial and Marine Engine Div. of Scania is a V8 turbocharged diesel engine with air-to-air charge cooling. It will gradually replace Scania's 14-L engine, though the overall dimensions for the DC16 are about the same. The electronically controlled, mechanically actuated unit injectors (EUI) provide enhanced power control and driveline management. The DC16's engine management system uses CAN to communicate with other systems on the vehicle, such as an electronic transmission or central processing unit. Available with ratings up to 404 kW (550 hp) at 2100 rpm, the new engine has a dry mass of 1290 kg (585 lb). It is the second unit in Scania's modular range of engines and uses the same cylinder heads, cylinders, pistons, and connecting rods as the DI/DC12 engine. Like all other Scania engines, each cylinder has a separate cylinder head rather than a large single head for each bank of cylinders.
