Engine and driveline behavior


Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. has extended the scope of its ADAMS/Engine simulation solution with the introduction of ADAMS/Driveline. The software allows engineers to model, simulate, and animate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of driveline systems, including differentials, prop shafts, transfer cases, and gearboxes, then explore the interaction between the driveline and chassis components such as suspensions, steering systems, brakes, and the vehicle body. The software provides detailed modeling templates, a comprehensive set of standard experiments, and a performance assessment environment. ADAMS/Engine solves dynamic problems of structural load, durability, vibration, and operational performance of powertrain systems. Dynamic solutions include detailed valvetrains, belts, cranks, and pistons.


Kohler's air-cooled engines

Kohler's Command PRO CS engines consist of five models ranging from 3 to 9 kW (4 to 12 hp). The four-stroke, air-cooled gasoline engines incorporate an overhead-valve, slant-cylinder design sized to fit compact installations. The engines include increased displacements, large-capacity fuel tanks, oversized mufflers, automatic compression release, steel-forged crankshafts, sealed electronic TCI ignition, and sound-absorbing alloy crankcases. The 125-cm3 CS 4 has a 56-mm (2.2-in) bore, 50-mm (1.9-in) stroke, and a mass of 16 kg (35.2 lb). With an 8.3:1 compression ratio, it produces 7.5 N•m (5.5 lb•ft) at 2600 rpm. The 360-cm3 CS 12 has an 85-mm (3.3-in) bore, 63-mm (2.5-in) stroke, and a mass of 32 kg (70.5 lb). With an 8.1:1 compression ratio, it produces 25 N•m (18.4 lb•ft) at 2400 rpm.


Electronic engine-speed governor

Spectrum, from IMPCO Technologies, is an electronic engine-speed governor for material-handling equipment and power-generation applications. The self-contained modular governor uses proprietary design and software to produce increased torque and power while reducing OEM assembly costs. Electronic governors use precise electronics and digital controls to improve the resolution and performance of engine and fuel-management systems.


Marine engine

For 2002 applications, the GM Powertrain Vortec 6000 V8 will be available to several marine OEMs. The Vortec 6000 engine is featured in several GM trucks, including the 2001 GMC Sierra C3, GMC Yukon Denali, and Chevrolet Suburban. With a targeted power rating of 242 kW (325 hp) at 5000 rpm and 500 N•m (370 lb•ft) at 4000 rpm in the pickup range, the 6.0-L engine produces an additional 52 kW (70 hp) and 54 N•m (40 lb•ft) over the 5.7-L. For marine applications, the Vortec 6000 delivers 260 kW (350 hp) at 5200 rpm and 518 N•m (382 lb•ft) at 4400 rpm.

The engine has a deep-skirt cast-iron block and features aluminum cylinder heads, similar in design to those developed for the 2001 LS6 Corvette V8, which allow for better flow, are 25 kg (56 lb) lighter, and have improved valve-seat durability. They also dissipate heat more quickly, reduce overall cooling requirements, and allow an increase in spark advance without pre-ignition.

Intake and exhaust ports are identical to those in the LS6 head for an increase in volumetric efficiency. The Vortec 6000 heads have a larger combustion chamber than the LS6 to accommodate the increased engine displacement. New, more durable, multi-layer-steel head gaskets maintain proper heat conductivity with the engine's cast-iron engine block.


Enhanced multi-purpose axle from Dana Spicer

Dana Corp.'s Off-Highway Systems Group introduced late last year the Spicer Model 53R300 axle, designed to provide improved life and increased capacity for equipment applications in the construction, forestry, and underground mining markets. The new Spicer axle, an enhanced version of the existing Model 21D4354 axle, is designed with an advanced four-pinion planetary gear system that provides substantially improved life and strength. The new design distributes the load over four planetary gears instead of the traditional three-gear design on the 21D4354. The additional gear capacity was added using less space.

Other important features of the 53R300 axle include a larger spindle and hub spline for more torque capacity, a wider bump ring for improved rim support, a new sun gear coupler for deeper planet ratio, and an optional trunnion mount. Spicer now offers mining equipment manufacturer customers the trunnion mount option on its complete range of axles from 8165 to 49,900-kg (18,000 to 110,000-lb) carry capacities.
