ITL transmissions

The PS760 four- and six-speed transmissions recently launched by International Transmissions Ltd. (ITL) were both designed using a modular approach and feature a co-axial pump drive. SAE B- and C-mounting options combined with a shorter overall length allow a more compact machine hydraulic system. Shaft bearings, together with the forward/reverse clutches, have been upgraded for increased durability and to allow for an increase in input torque to 800 N•m (590 lb•ft), with the six-speed transmission having an option of 1000 N•m (1330 lb•ft). Gear shifting is electrohydraulically controlled via cartridge valves that feature Deutsch connectors. An optional ECU provides improved shift quality. All solenoid valves are grouped together to ease fault finding. Future features include a manually applied wet parking brake.

Emitec catalyst design

Emitec GmbH has designed a new substrate with ultra-high-cell density, up to 2000 cells/in2 (3 cells/mm2), and thin cell walls. These design factors increase the geometric surface area, thus improving emissions-conversion efficiency. Lowering the mass through thinner foils decreases catalyst heat-up time. With faster catalyst heat-up, the substrate activates quickly and cold-start emissions are significantly reduced. According to the company, the technology allows for smaller converters with the same efficiency as standard cell densities, such as 400 or 600 cells/in2 (0.62 or 0.93 cells/mm2), while reducing precious metal content.

New diesels from Deere

The lowering of both noise and heat rejection in the new PowerTech 2.4- and 3.0-L (pictured) diesel engines from John Deere Power Systems has resulted in the reduction or elimination of the need for expensive sound attenuation, vibration analysis, and new cooling systems. The company reduced parts in the engines through component integration, designing the timing gear cover to include the water pump housing, oil pump housing, governor housing, and sensors. The engines, for equipment requiring 35 to 99 hp (26 to 74 kW), feature integrated oil and coolant pumps to minimize potential leak paths. The water pump operates independently of the fan, providing an option for the fan to run slower and reduce noise. The mechanically governed fuel system is mounted inside the block and head, which eliminates external high-pressure lines and minimizes potential leak paths.

GM industrial engines

The 1.6-L single overhead cam Vortec 1600 engine from GM Powertrain widens the company's industrial engine range from 1.6 to 8.1 L. The inline four-cylinder engine features a 79 x 81.5 mm (3.11 x 3.21 in) bore and stroke, a 9.4:1 compression ratio, and a cast aluminum cylinder head with valve seat inserts. The iron-block Vortec 1600 also features a distributorless ignition system that contributes to reduced maintenance and increased reliability. The engine is sold to OEMs without an intake manifold or fuel system to allow them to customize their own systems. It is adaptable for use with gasoline, liquid propane, or compressed natural gas. Originally designed by Opel, the engine is assembled in Brazil.

Cooling systems

Young Touchstone's off-highway cooling systems integrate radiators, charge-air coolers, and/or hydraulic oil coolers in a ready-to-install package. The systems feature mechanical-bond radiator core construction with tube-to-header joints, eliminating the possibility of solder or braze joints or grommets to fatigue, crack, or wear out. Innovative O-ring tank seals eliminate conventional gaskets.

Bosch brake valve

The LT31 is a one-pedal, single-circuit brake and inching valve with infinite variable actuation from Bosch Rexroth. Used in vehicles fitted with a hydrostatic travel drive and a remotely powered brake valve—including forklifts and 3- to 10-ton (2.7- to 9-t) wheel loaders—the LT31 reduces pilot pressure in the closed circuit of the travel drive as the pedal is pressed, enabling the vehicle to decelerate. Inching and braking pressure are proportional to the actuation force. The valve features all connections on one side and low hysteresis, piping, and assembly effort. No preload valve is required for the brake, and overlapping of inching and braking is possible.
