Inline engines from DDC

The Series 900 engines from Detroit Diesel Corp. (DDC) have been adapted from their primary application—Mercedes-Benz trucks—to include off-highway applications such as dump trucks, drilling equipment, power generation, cranes, and harvesters. The engines are available in inline four- (Model 904) and six-cylinder (Model 906, shown) configurations with displacements of 4.3- and 6.4-L, respectively. The 906 is rated from 200 to 275 hp (150 to 205 kW) at 2200 rpm and 553 to 811 lb•ft (750 to 1100 N•m) at 1200-1600 rpm. Both engines have a 4.02 x 5.12 in (102.1 x 130.0 mm) bore and stroke. The deep-skirted engine cylinder block contributes to reduced engine vibration and noise. The water-cooled engines are equipped with an electronic-injection system and individual pumps for each cylinder. The engine's electronics can be interfaced with other machine controls. Multiple SAE A and B gear-driven accessory drive locations eliminate the need for fan belts.

Kawasaki adds to engines

The FH721D 25-hp (19-kW), horizontal-shaft engine has been added to Kawasaki's line of FH Series air-cooled V-twin powerplants. The new unit brings the FH Series to a total of 12 engines—four horizontal shaft and eight vertical shaft—less than four years after the launch of the four-cycle FH500V. The power ratings of the series now range from 13 to 25 hp (10 to 10 kW). The engines feature cast-iron cylinders, a fully pressurized lubrication system, top-access oil fill and dipstick, a pulse-type fuel pump and inline fuel filter, a rotating grass screen, and a low-tone muffler. The models available with over 19 hp (14 kW) include a twin-barrel carburetor with fuel shut-off solenoid, a 12-V Bendix starter, a 13-A charging system, and a separated choke and throttle.

Self-steering suspension

The RLT-230-S integrated lift unit for trailers from Ridewell Corp. includes suspension, brakes, and fully dressed fabricated axle. It may be used in the pusher or tag positions and is rated at 13,200-lb (6000-kg) capacity. The RLT-230-S features a straight axle design, compared to the drop-center axle on the RLT-230 truck-mount version. The pre-assembled, parallelogram-designed system self-steers with a pre-set constant axle caster. The system keeps axles on the ground when cornering for tight turning and allows tires to consistently track with the trailer, eliminating tire scrub. It is available in mounting height ranges from 12.5 to 18 in (318 to 457 mm). Other features include 38 to 44-in (965 to 1118-mm) frame widths, urethane bushings, and dual self-centering stabilizers.

MICO disc brake

MICO, Inc.'s new Gold Series M-Mount multiple disc brake uses a high-performance lining that allows for a torque of 333 lb•ft (450 N•m) in a compact size. The dry-design, spring-apply hydraulic brake has an SAE two-bolt A and four-bolt Magneto-mount input face. It is capable of full system pressures of up to 3000 psi (21 MPa), with high-speed capabilities up to 4000 rpm in the vertical position and 5000 rpm in the horizontal position. The brake's large piston area creates low release pressures, making it suitable for applications with closed-loop hydraulic systems. Braking is provided by a rotating disc splined to the shaft and stationary friction plates. Force is transmitted to the disc pack through a hydraulic piston and a series of preloaded springs. The brake is released by hydraulic pressure applied at the piston to compress the springs. Nitrile components allow for operating temperature ranges from -40 to +250°F (-40 to 120°C).

Intelligent transmission

Transfluid Industrial Transmission's KPTO fluid coupling, used in a variety of internal-combustion engine applications, is now offered with a new electronic controller, Model PCB. The PCB is a microprocessor-based electronic circuit board designed as a supervisor for the KPTO to reduce energy consumption, improve operational safety, process data, and increase productivity. It emits analog signals of transmitted power and output speed, including digital alarm signals of maximum slip, slip threshold, maximum temperature, maximum and minimum oil pressure, and solenoid valve on/off status. It is equipped with an RS-232 serial port for connecting with the interface program, which can be used for monitoring data in real time and for programming. Markets include crushers, grinders, shredders, pumps, fans marine propulsion systems, and other heavy-duty, diesel-engine-powered applications.

Lube filters

The full-flow portion of the High Velocity Dual-Flow line of lube filters from Baldwin Filters contains 100% synthetic Microglass media. The media was developed specifically to increase structural strength, efficiency, and capacity while retaining its non-restrictive, flow-through characteristics. The by-pass portion of the filter allows 15% of the oil to flow through this section instead of the usual 10%. A venturi-type cone creates a low-pressure zone that pulls the filtered oil from the full-flow section and routes it through the by-pass cellulose media, which removes the smaller contaminant particles. The spin-ons have only one inlet and one outlet so filtered oil from the full-flow and by-pass sections flow together at the base and then directly back to the engine.
