Cat industrial engine

Caterpillar has increased the power rating of its 3126B engine by 25 hp (19 kW), bringing the 7.2-L industrial engine to 300 hp (224 kW). The 3126B is a six-cylinder engine offering Cat's ADEM III controller and the HEUI fuel system. The ADEM III is an electronic control module that provides more control input and output, allowing additional features to be added or parameters controlled and monitored. HEUI uses hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled unit injectors for adjustment-free electronic control of fuel-injection pressure, timing, and duration.


Propulsion from UQM

UQM's Integrated Electric Traction System (INTETS) for battery, hybrid, and fuel-cell electric vehicles is the electrical equivalent of a conventional powertrain consisting of an internal-combustion engine, transmission, and differential. The system can be used as a sole propulsion system for mid-sized vehicles and as an axle-drive system for larger vehicles. Measuring 15 in (380 mm) in length with an 11-in (280-mm) diameter (excluding an optional electronic inverter/controller, which incorporates CAN), INTETS includes internal epicyclic single-stage gearing, off-the-shelf internal differential components, and parking pawl.


Hydraulic caliper

Knott Brake Co. has developed a hydraulic caliper (shown) that will use the same mounting as the company's mechanical caliper. Prototypes of the hydraulic caliper, which are suitable for a service brake in many applications, were made available last month. The calipers have a theoretical torque of 655 N•m (485 lb•ft) based on a 8-in (203-mm) rotor. The company is also making prototypes of two wet disc brakes. One of the brakes, with a maximum torque of 1000 N•m (740 lb•ft), would be used for a service and parking brake for a forklift. The other brake is being designed for high torque—14,200 N•m (10,500 lb•ft)—as a fail-safe emergency parking brake for military and special purpose vehicles.


Torsional couplings

Lovejoy, Inc.'s shaft- or flywheel-mounted couplings address torsional vibration problems common to internal-combustion-engine driven applications. The LF coupling is built around a donut-shaped elastomeric element (either natural rubber, neoprene, Hytrel, or Zytel) alternately bolted to a cylindrical center shaft hub and a flange-type shaft hub. Fifteen sizes accommodate nominal torque up to 5000 N•m (3700 lb•ft) and continuous vibratory torque up to 2000 N•m (1500 lb•ft). The LK coupling is a robust two-piece unit intended for diesel, gasoline, or natural gas engines in the low- to mid-power ranges. Its design features a molded, glass-fiber reinforced polyamid flange that withstands temperatures of -40 to +300°F (-40 to +150°C). The LM flywheel couplings are specifically for diesel engines driving relatively small inertial loads. Eight sizes with nominal torque ratings from 250 to 3800 N•m (185 to 2800 lb•ft) cover applications from small single-cylinder to large multi-cylinder engines.


Volvo Penta genset

The TAD1631GE diesel genset from Volvo Penta was designed for easy, fast installation. To maintain a controlled working temperature in cylinders and combustion chambers, the engine is equipped with piston cooling. It is also fitted with wet, replaceable cylinder liners with a flame barrier that protects the cylinder head gaskets against high temperatures, as well as valve seats/guides to enhance the durability and service life of the engine. The connecting rods are tapered to reduce the risk of piston cracking. The air-to-air intercooler controls coolant through a water-distribution duct in the cylinder block. An electronic speed governor system controls the engine speed in droop or ischronous mode. The electrical system includes a control unit, speed sensor, and electro-magnetic actuator.


Dana hydrostatic adapter

For applications in light-duty, hydrostatically powered compact construction and utility vehicles operating at about 25 hp (19 kW), the new Model 44 axle hydrostatic adapter from the Off-Highway Systems Group of Dana Corp. features an integral compact disc parking brake that provides both secondary and emergency parking brake options. As the latest addition to the Model 44 Series, the adaptor allows the hydrostatic motor to be bolted directly onto the axle, a feature that allows it to be used in tight powertrain compartments.


Funk's powershift transmission

The DF500 electronically controlled, direct-drive transmission from Funk Manufacturing is rated at 450 hp (335 kW) at 2100 rpm. The 18F/9R DF500 was designed originally for John Deere's 9000 series agricultural tractors, though Funk has modified it for other agriculture and construction applications. The powertrain and hydraulic system were modeled during the design phase so that transmission-shift performance could be accurately predicted and engineered. Intermittent steps have been eliminated when shifting from neutral into any of the first 13 forward gears or the first three reverse gears. It features plug-and-play and onboard diagnostic capabilities.
