Fuel injectors

Fuel injectors from Quantum Technologies WorldWide, Inc. are direct-replacement injectors designed to work with CNG, LPG, and hydrogen-fueled internal-combustion engines as well as fuel cells. Quantum couples the injectors with electromagnetic technology and an innovative fuel-metering design to produce sequential, multi-point fuel systems for alternative-fuel vehicles, allowing for tighter fuel control and the potential for reduced vehicle-exhaust emissions. The injector is designed to mitigate orifice contamination and achieve one-half billion cycles.

Seltec compressors

Seltec's new TM-21HX equipment-class compressor has a 215-cm3 displacement and was specifically designed for heavy-duty applications such as fire trucks and construction and agricultural vehicles. The compressor uses a swashplate design with ten cylinders. The TM-21HX features the same package size as the company's TM-16HD, but with 30% more capacity. The model is available with the eight-groove poly-V or two A-groove clutch in 12- and 24-V.

Ductile iron hubs

Next-generation Ductilite ductile iron hubs from Gunite Corp. weigh less than an aluminum hub designed for a comparable axle rating and are available for front-axle applications up to 14,600 lb (6600 kg). Unlike aluminum hubs that have limited axle applications due to axle ratings, the Ductilite hubs are compatible for all wheel, drums, and vehicles in a fleet regardless of axle ratings. A drive-axle version of the hub is in development and will be introduced later this year.

Cummins' new engine range

The new indirect-injection A Series engines from Cummins are available from 18 to 60 hp (13 to 45 kW) and with displacements from 0.9 to 2.3 L. The A Series includes features such as dual hydraulic pump mounts, crank-mounted PTO, a variety of drivetrain mounting configurations, and integrated cold-start aids to enhance equipment integration in a variety of applications. The A Series lineup includes three engine families with a total of six different power and torque curves. The A2000 and A2300 are naturally aspirated, and a turbocharged version of the A2300 provides a higher power-to-weight ratio. The three-cylinder A1400 and A1700 use the same block, power cylinder technology, and content as their four-cylinder counterparts. The A900 is also a three-cylinder engine.

Gear units from ZF

ZF Passau has launched four gear units designed specifically for lift trucks powered by internal-combustion engines. The units' electronic inching feature allows operators to position load to 1-mm (0.04-in) accuracy. Via an electrohydraulic controller that matches the functions of the engine, converter, and gear unit, an operator can reduce via a pedal the rotational speed to maneuver in creep gear without having to declutch or change gear. The CAN bus gear-unit controller has a diagnostic interface that can be programmed to a specific vehicle's application. The units range in input torques from 750 to 1300 N•m (550 to 960 lb•ft). Each unit has three forward and reverse gears that can be shifted manually or automatically without interruption to tractive force.

Electromagnetic fan drive

MagForce is an electromagnetic fan drive for heavy-duty construction and agriculture vehicles from Horton, Inc., that features a two-speed fan design. The compact fan alternates between eddy current for low-speed conditions and electric current for high-speed conditions. By automatically switching speeds on demand, depending upon conditions, MagForce saves fuel, provides precise temperature control, and reduces noise by up to 50%. It is designed for applications with fans up to 26 in (660 mm) and 50- to 200-hp (37- to 149-kW) diesel engines.

Perkins compact engine

The 800 Series from Perkins Engines Co. consists of 3.3-L, four-cylinder engines that are available in the 43 to 60-kW (58 to 60-hp) range in either naturally aspirated, indirect injection (IDI) or direct-injection, turbocharged (DIT) versions. The increased cubic capacity of the IDI engine allows for lower noise and emissions without a compromise on power delivery. The DIT version provides for maximum power while still remaining within emissions and noise targets. The engine family has a strengthened cast-iron cylinder block for increased rigidity and life, a mechanical rotary fuel-injection pump with integral timing controls and electrical shut-off solenoid, and newly designed cross-flow cylinder heads for combustion efficiency. The 800 Series is quieter than its 700 Series predecessor, with a 1-3 dB(A) reduction.
