Allison rings a Bell with fourth-generation electronic controls

The Bell 40D G2 articulated dump truck is a vehicle of considerable substance. One of the largest of its type in the world, and with a rated payload of 37,000 kg (81,570 lb) and total laden mass of 66,970 kg (147,650 lb), it is no lightweight. The power unit is an 11.95-L V6 Mercedes-Benz turbocharged, intercooled, low-emissions (Tier 3) diesel with net torque of 1974 N·m (1455 lb·ft) at1300 rpm and a power output of 315 kW (420 hp). An engine-mounted 4500 R ORS (Off-road Series) fully automatic Allison planetary transmission with six forward gears and one reverse is fitted with lock-up via a hydrodynamic torque converter in all gears.
