Virtually new machine
Virtual reality (VR) can offer major savings in new product program time and costs. But a difficulty faced by some companies may be making the decision to abandon traditional methods of design and development. Terex Compact Equipment's (TCE) decision to use VR was triggered by the time and cost that had been involved in the development of a driveline for its new backhoe/loader (digger), the Terex 860/960. With program schedule pressures mounting, the company decided to switch to advanced simulation and VR to speed the design and development of the vehicle's cab and avoid the need to build a physical prototype. To do so, TCE entered into a partnership with VR prototyping specialists, PTC and Virtalis.
