New driveline products from Newage

Coventry-based mechanical driveline equipment specialist Newage Transmissions Ltd. recently introduced two new driveline products for the off-highway industry: a marine gearbox and an axle.

The first showing of the company's shallow-gearcase PRM1500s marine gearbox was at the Amsterdam International Boat Show in November. It was exhibited alongside Newage's recently introduced PRM80 pleasure-craft unit. The PRM1500S marine gearbox is a twin countershaft design compatible with left- or right-hand propeller rotations to suit both single- and twin-engine installations. It is available in six standard reduction ratios, from 1.22: to 3.0:1, and allows maximum input torque of 1500 N•m (1100 lb•ft) to be transmitted continuously in either direction at a maximum input speed of 2500 rpm.

Carrying a Lloyd's approved rating, the new unit offers a 40 kg (88 lb) saving over deep-ratio PRM1500 models. It is supplied with an integral SAE 3 housing as standard. Its maintenance-free, oil-operated, multi-disc clutches are engaged by a single lever compatible with proprietary remote control operating systems. The need for special-purpose automatic-transmission fluid is eliminated by the use of engine-oil-specification lubricant, and a pressure-modulated selection valve ensures smooth drive engagement for good handling and rapid response to control movements.

The gearcase is manufactured from high-grade cast iron, which is internally ribbed for extra rigidity and strength. In addition, the oil pump and hydraulic control valves on all PRM1500S models are mounted externally for simplified access and servicing. Two optional clutched power takeoffs—compatible with SAE-classification hydraulic pumps—are available to drive onboard machinery.

The axle is a double-reduction unit developed for a European off-highway vehicle maker. The heavy-duty unit, incorporating its own integral transfer gearbox, was developed specifically for Ebbs & Radinger. Designated 315 RFH, the new rigid-axle unit features double reduction drive to the road wheels via a crown wheel and pinion, in-board planetary reduction units, and fully floating half-shafts.

"Austrian-based Ebbs & Radinger is already one of our major European customers for off-road transmission equipment," said Newage's Sales Manager, Roger Mills. "We are delighted to have been selected to develop this latest hydrostatic axle variant, which is destined for a brand new range of construction industry dumper trucks."

The first pair of prototype units have just been shipped for evaluation. "In addition, our performance throughout the program has placed us in a strong position to secure a follow-on axle design contract for another range of off-highway vehicles currently under development by this customer," Mills added.
