Magnetostrictive position sensors from MTS Systems

MTS Systems' Temposonics EP is a magnetostrictive linear position sensor that is suited for applications where linear potentiometers are currently used.

Magnetostriction is a small variation in the size or shape of a ferromagnetic material when that material is applied to a magnetic field. When that principle is applied in MTS position sensor technology, the result is a precise, reliable, and repeatable position output, which occurs with no contact between the sensing elements. This is achieved when an interrogation or current pulse is launched in a specially designed magnetostrictive waveguide, creating an instantaneous magnetic field along the active length of a sensor. This magnetic field then interacts with the magnetic field generated by a magnet attached to a moveable machine part or liquid-level float.

The interaction of the two magnetic fields creates a torsional strain pulse that travels at sonic speed through the waveguide and which is detected by the unit's electronics. The position of the magnet or float is determined by measuring the elapsed time between the launching of the interrogation pulse and the detection of the strain pulse. The result is accurate, non-contact position sensing with absolutely no wear to the sensing components.

The versatility of MTS position sensors is demonstrated in the variety of performance parameters through which the sensors can be evaluated. For example, the critical requirements of some applications may be very rapid update times, while other applications may rely more on superior precision. MTS position sensors provide specific performance parameters for distinct application demands.

Earlier this year, MTS Temposonics added the new Temposonics E Series to its family of magnetostrictive linear position sensors. The first model in the E Series, the Temposonics EP, is a profile-style suited for any application where linear potentiometers are currently used. Typical applications are plastic-injection and blow-molding machinery as well as presses and other specialty machinery. The EP can also be used as a retrofit sensor.

Temposonics EP sensors are available with 0 to 10 V dc output scale and in stroke ranges from 50 to 1270 mm (2 to 60 in) in 25-mm (1-in) increments. A 24 V dc power supply is required for operation. The position magnet is available in either a captive sliding or floating magnet configuration.

The E Series uses the MTS Temposonics SE (sensing element), which is the same building block all Temposonics sensor models use, including the III and L Series sensors. Linearity performance is less than or equal to 0.02% of full scale or 0.05 mm (0.002 in), whichever is greater, and repeatability is less than or equal to 0.0001% of full stroke. The operating range is -40 to +75oC (-40 to +167oF).
