Technical Innovations
Lubrizol and Caterpillar co-developing low-emissions diesel fuel

The Lubrizol Corp. and Caterpillar Inc. are developing a low-emissions diesel fuel designed for use in commercial service engines. The unique fuel technology uses Lubrizol's performance chemistry and system capabilities and Caterpillar's diesel engine combustion and emissions knowledge. The new fuel will be sold by marketers and distributors and supported by fully integrated chemical, electronic, and mechanical components sold by Lubrizol under the name PuriNOx Performance Systems.

PuriNOx fuel is a stable blend of additives, water, and commercial diesel fuel. Tests indicate that, when compared to commercial diesel fuel, PuriNOx significantly reduces two of the most critical emissions from compression ignition engines—nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates. PuriNOx fuel reduces NOx by 5-30% and particulates by 20-50%. The fuel can be used in older and newer diesel engines and requires no modification to fuel systems or engine hardware. PuriNOx fuel will be blended using Lubrizol's proprietary blending units to meet market needs.

PuriNOx Performance Systems' products are under laboratory and market evaluation for various applications of both on- and off-road mobile and stationary equipment. Additional market evaluations of PuriNOx fuel will take place in North America, Europe, and Central and South America in the coming months. PuriNOx Performance Systems will be offered commercially by Lubrizol in emissions-sensitive regions, such as California, at the successful conclusion of the evaluations.
