Fundamental Mass Reduction/Light Weighting Techniques Webinar     New!

Webinar

I.D.# WB1129Printable Description
Duration: 2 Hours
Upcoming open enrollment dates being scheduled. Please check back.

With the rising price of fossil based energy, government mandates, and the need for conservation of material resources, the mobility industry faces an ever increasing need to reduce the weight of products. Weight or mass reduction implies reducing the quantity and volume of material used, usually manifesting itself in reduced cost and package-space requirements.

This two hour webinar is designed to help those concerned with the mass attributes of their product understand and clearly interpret the meaning and implication of their mass reduction challenge. Participants will learn how to identify and select appropriate tools and methods specific to their own field and needs and to effectively and efficiently accomplish their light weighting objective.

Learning Objectives
By connecting with this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Define relevant mass and energy related principals of physics
  • Describe engineering principals of geometry, stress, strength and material science as related to properties of mass, strength, stiffness, etc.
  • Summarize use – environment, manufacturing process and economics related considerations
  • Choose tools to employ in early phases of product development and when and how to utilize advanced CAE-based tools
  • Identify available alternative material choices (metallic & non metallic) and how to select and apply them
  • Anticipate tools and technologies likely to be available in coming years

Who Should Attend
This webinar would be useful for designers, engineers, product developers, project managers and marketing specialists who are engineering, manufacturing, developing and marketing a product that must move to perform its function and, therefore, its mass and energy use are likely to be important. This is especially applicable to all kinds of vehicles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational, industrial and military vehicles, as well as to planes and ships. Webinar participants should have a basic mechanical or material science engineering background and some industrial experience working in product development.

Instructor(s): Dinesh Seksaria
Dinesh SeksariaDinesh C. Seksaria, P.E., retired as Product Development Manager from Alcoa after 21 years and with a 42 year product engineering career. He continues to actively participate in his lifelong passion for product development as a consultant. His product engineering accomplishments include more than 40 patents and 30 publications. He has successfully solved problems of light weighting, stiffness, strength and durability in the development of a variety of vehicle related products using a variety of design tools and techniques. Dinesh has worked on structures for cars, trucks, lift trucks, cranes, excavators, farm machinery and military vehicles systems, as well as aircraft and missile systems. He brings a portfolio of knowledge and experience related to structural and material considerations in design and development of load bearing components of products utilizing a variety of materials. His expertise with application of light weight materials such as aluminum, magnesium, titanium and composites uniquely enables him to discuss the subject of this webinar. He is a licensed mechanical engineer and received a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Registration Information
Registration for this webinar is available on a per-person basis, similar to purchasing a seat in a classroom. Participants attend an online session from work or home; anywhere with a PC with internet access (at least 56K) and a telephone or VoIP headset. The fee includes one connection to the two hour conference call (toll free telephone number provided for U.S. and select countries*) and assigned personal ID number; one connection to SAE's online training center (via WebEx); and access to a secure course in the SAE Learning Center that contains the webinar presentations, session recordings, supplemental materials, and assignments.

Registrations will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. the day before the start of the webinar, but early registration is encouraged to allow for pre-course set-up and instructions.

*Global toll-free telephone numbers are provided for many countries outside the U.S., but are limited to those on the WebEx call-in toll-free number list. Check here to see if your country has a global call-in toll free telephone number for this webinar. If your country is not listed, you may still connect using the US/Canada Call-in toll number (tolls from your carrier may apply) or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

Test your PC and connection to see if it meets the minimum system requirements for the WebEx online training center before you register. Go to http://www.webex.com/lp/jointest/ and follow the onscreen instructions for "Join Meeting Test".

NOTE: The course presentation will be recorded and made available for 30 days to those who register by the deadline.

Multiple Seat Discount - Does your company have a group of employees who need this course? Register one individual at the appropriate member or list price, then register additional employees at half off the list price. Registration by phone with SAE Customer Service is required to take advantage of this discount. Register all individuals at the same time or mention the confirmation number for the first registrant. The offer is good for only the same webinar offering. All registrants will receive a personal account and opportunity for CEUs.

Cancellations
Can't attend on the date/time above? The presentation will be recorded and made available for 30 days to those who are registered, regardless of availability for the live session. If you still need to cancel, transfer to a future offering, or designate a substitute, a full refund is issued if you notify SAE at least 14 days prior to the webinar start date. If less than 14 days prior, please contact SAE Customer Service to discuss options*. NOTE: SAE reserves the right to cancel webinars and cannot be held responsible for related costs incurred by registrants other than the registration fee.
