Wheel Torque-Based Control: Transmission Input Torque Determination and Inertia Compensation

Traditionally, the controls system in production vehicles with automatic transmission interprets the driver’s accelerator pedal position as a demand for transmission input torque. However, with the advent of electrified vehicles, where actuators are located at different positions in the drivetrain, and of autonomous vehicles, which are self-driving, it is more convenient to interpret the demand (either human or virtual) in vehicle acceleration or wheel torque domain. To this end, a Wheel Torque-based longitudinal Control (WTC) framework was developed, wherein demands can be converted accurately between the vehicle acceleration or wheel torque domain and the transmission assembly input torque domain.

A Comparison of DES Methods for the DrivAer Generic Realistic Car Model on a Wall Resolved and a Wall Function Mesh

The DrivAer realistic generic car model is now established as one of the benchmark geometries to assess the aerodynamic flow field characteristics associated with passenger vehicles. Since its introduction in 2012, the database of experimental studies has grown and provides excellent validation opportunities for analytical methods. This paper compares Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for integral forces, surface pressure distribution and velocity flow fields for the DrivAer model in the notchback configuration. Transient CFD data are obtained by employing hybrid Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation methods (Detached Eddy Simulation - DES) using the finite volume solvers Simcenter Star-CCM+ and the openFOAM based flow solver IconCFD. Computational results are calculated using Wall Resolved Meshes (WRM), where y+ < 1, and Wall Function Meshes (WFM), where 30 < y+ < 100.

3D CFD Simulation of Hydraulic Test of an Engine Coolant System

Designing an efficient vehicle coolant system depends on meeting target coolant flow rate to different components with minimum energy consumption by coolant pump. The flow resistance across different components and hoses dictates the flow supplied to that branch which can affect the effectiveness of the coolant system. Hydraulic tests are conducted to understand the system design for component flow delivery and pressure drops and assess necessary changes to better distribute the coolant flow from the pump. The current study highlights the ability of a complete 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to effectively mimic a hydraulic test. The coolant circuit modeled in this simulation consists of an engine water-jacket, a thermostat valve, bypass valve, a coolant pump, a radiator, and flow path to certain auxiliary components like turbo charger, rear transmission oil cooler etc.

Fast Air-Path Modeling for Stiff Components

Development of propulsion control systems frequently involves large-scale transient simulations, e.g. Monte Carlo simulations or drive-cycle optimizations, which require fast dynamic plant models. Models of the air-path—for internal combustion engines or fuel cells—can exhibit stiff behavior, though, causing slow numerical simulations due to either using an implicit solver or sampling much faster than the bandwidth of interest to maintain stability. This paper proposes a method to reduce air-path model stiffness by adding an impedance in series with potentially stiff components, e.g. throttles, valves, compressors, and turbines, thereby allowing the use of a fast-explicit solver. An impedance, by electrical analogy, is a frequency-dependent resistance to flow, which is shaped to suppress the high-frequency dynamics causing air-path stiffness, while maintaining model accuracy in the bandwidth of interest.

Game Theory-Based Modeling of Multi-Vehicle/Multi-Pedestrian Interaction at Unsignalized Crosswalks

The improvement of road transport safety requires the development of advanced vehicle safety systems, whose development could be facilitated by using complex interaction models of different road users. To this end, this paper deals with the modeling of multi-vehicle/multi-pedestrian interactions at unsignalized crosswalks. This multi-agent modeling approach extends on the existing basic model covering only single-vehicle/single-pedestrian interactions. The basic model structure and parameters have remained the same, as it was previously experimentally calibrated and thoroughly verified. The proposed modeling procedure employs the basic model within the multi-agent setting based on its application to relevant single-vehicle and single-pedestrian pairs. The resulting, so-called pre-decisions are then used for making final crossing decisions in a current time step for each agent.

Unified Power-Based Analysis of Combustion Engine and Battery Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption

The previously developed power-based fuel consumption theory for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEV) is extended to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). The main difference between the BEV model structure and the ICEV is the bi-directional character of traction motors and batteries. A traction motor model was developed as a bi-linear function of positive and negative traction power. Another difference is that the accessories and cabin heating are powered directly from the battery, and not from the powertrain. The resulting unified model for ICEV and BEV energy consumption has linear terms proportional to positive and negative traction power, accessory power, and overhead, in varying proportions. Compared to the ICEV, the BEV powertrain has a high marginal efficiency and low overhead. As a result, BEV energy consumption data under a wide range of driving conditions are mainly proportional to net traction power, with only a small offset.

An Investigation of the Simulation of Sintering Distortion in a 316L Part Manufactured Using Bound Metal Deposition 3D Printing

Metal binderjetting (MBJ) and bound metal deposition (BMD) are high throughput additive manufacturing process that have the potential to meet the needs of automotive volume production. In many cases, these processes require a sintering post-process to meet final dimensions. Because the sintering stage is performed free standing (i.e. without the use of tooling) and can involve up to a 20% dimensional change from green part to the final part shape, part distortion can be a concern. In this study, the sintering stage of a bridge geometry was simulated under different parameter settings using a Finite Element Analysis. The sensitivity of the simulation to various process parameter inputs was examined. Physical parts were then produced in 316L using a bound metal deposition and sintering process and compared to prediction. The sintering simulation indicated good agreement with experiment for some dimensions but highlighted the need for additional analysis.

Improving Keyhole Stability during Laser Welding of AA5xxx Alloys

Laser welding of the magnesium-bearing AA5xxx aluminum alloys is often beset by keyhole instability, especially in the lap through joint configuration. This phenomenon is characterized by periodic collapse of the keyhole leaving large voids in the weld zone. In addition, the top surface can exhibit undercut and roughness. In full penetration welds, keyhole instability can also produce a spikey root and severe top surface concavity. These discontinuities could prevent a weld from achieving engineering specification compliance, pose a craftsmanship concern, or reduce the strength and fatigue performance of the weld. In the case of a full penetration weld, a spikey root could compromise part fit-up and corrosion protection, or damage adjacent sheet metal, wiring, interior components, or trim.

On the Utility of Ammonia Sensors for Diesel Emissions Control

This paper analyzes the use of an ammonia sensor for feedback control in diesel exhaust systems. We build our case around the specific example of the heavy duty transient cycle, and an exhaust system with an SCR catalyst, a single urea injector and an upstream and downstream NOx sensor. A key component in our analysis is the inclusion of the tolerance of the ammonia sensor. We show that with the current understanding of the sensor tolerance, the ammonia sensor has limited benefit for controls.

Towards a Standardized Assessment of Automotive Aerodynamic CFD Prediction Capability - AutoCFD 2: Ford DrivAer Test Case Summary

The 2nd Automotive CFD Prediction workshop (AutoCFD2) was organized to improve the state-of-the-art in automotive aerodynamic prediction. It is the mission of the workshop organizing committee to drive the development and validation of enhanced CFD methods by establishing publicly available standard test cases for which high quality on- and off-body wind tunnel test data is available. This paper reports on the AutoCFD2 workshop for the Ford DrivAer test case. Since its introduction, the DrivAer quickly became the quasi-standard for CFD method development and correlation. The Ford DrivAer has been chosen due to the proven, high-quality experimental data available, which includes integral aerodynamic forces, 209 surface pressures, 11 velocity profiles and 4 flow field planes. For the workshop, the notchback version of the DrivAer in a closed cooling, static floor test condition has been selected.

Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) with Traffic Preview

By utilizing the vehicle to infrastructure communication, the conventional Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) applications give speed advisory range for drivers to travel to pass at the green light. However, these systems do not consider the traffic between the ego vehicle and the traffic light location, resulting in inaccurate speed advisories. Therefore, the driver needs to intuitively adjust the vehicle's speed to pass at the green light and avoid traffic in these scenarios. Furthermore, inaccurate speed advisories may result in unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, resulting in poor fuel efficiency and comfort. To address these shortcomings of conventional GLOSA, in this study, we proposed the utilization of collaborative perception messages shared by smart infrastructures to create an enhanced speed advisory for the connected vehicle drivers and automated vehicles.

This paper presents a method of using CAE to determine the pre-load and torque applied to a U-Bolt rear Spring Seat. In this paper it is review two U-bolt design and the stresses generated by the pre-load torque applied, based in this study a process to determine the minimal preload and the torque is discussed. By this process it is possible to determine the minimum Torque and the correct pre-load in the U-Bolt element and assuring the correct fastening of the components avoiding over stress in the Bar elements.

Managing Trust Along the CAN Bus

Multiple approaches have been created to enhance intra-vehicle communications security over the past three decades since the introduction of the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. The twin pair differential-mode communications bus is tremendously robust in the face of interference, yet physical access to the bus offers a variety of potential attack vectors whereby false messages and/or denial of service are achievable. This paper evaluates extensions of a Physical-layer (PHY) common-mode watermark-based authentication technique recently developed to improve authentication on the CAN bus by considering the watermark as a side-channel communications means for high value information. We also propose and analyze higher layer algorithms, with benefits and pitfalls, for employing the watermark as a physical-layer firewall.

Laser-Based In-Exhaust Gas Sensor for On-Road Vehicles

A novel laser-absorption gas sensing apparaOn-vehicle Testing at VERtus capable of measuring NO directly within vehicle exhaust was developed and tested. The sensor design was enabled by key advances in the construction of optical probes that are sufficiently compact for deployment in real-world exhaust systems and can survive the harsh, high-temperature, and strongly vibrating environment typical of exhaust streams. Prototype test campaigns were conducted at high-temperature flow facilities intended to simulate exhaust gas conditions and within the exhaust of vehicles mounted on a chassis dynamometer. Results from these tests demonstrated that the sensor prototype is fundamentally free of cross-interference with competing species in the exhaust stream, can achieve a 1 ppmv NO detection limit, and can be operated across the full range of thermodynamic conditions expected for typical vehicle exhausts.

Numerical Modelling of Coolant Filling and De-aeration in a Battery Electric Vehicle Cooling System

Trapped air bubbles inside coolant systems have adverse effect on the cooling performance. Hence, it is imperative to ensure an effective filling and de-aeration of the coolant system in order to have less air left before the operation of the coolant system. In the present work, a coolant/air multiphase VOF method was utilized using the commercial CFD software SimericsMP+® to study the coolant filling and subsequent de-aeration process in a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) cooling system. First, validations of the numerical simulations against experiments were performed for a simplified coolant recirculation system. This system uses a tequila bottle for de-aeration and the validations were performed for different coolant flow rates to examine the de-aeration efficiency. A similar trend of de-aeration was captured between simulation and experimental measurement.

Estimation of Surface Temperature Distributions Across an Array of Lithium-Ion Battery Cells Using a Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network

As electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular and necessary for the future mobility needs of civilization, further effort is continually made to improve the efficiency, cost, and safety of the lithium-ion battery packs that power these vehicles. To facilitate these goals, this paper introduces a data driven model to predict a distribution of surface temperatures for a lithium-ion battery pack: a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. The LSTM model is trained and validated with lithium-ion cells electrically connected to form a battery pack. Voltage, current, state of charge (SOC), and cell surface temperature from two arrays are used as inputs from a wide range of high and low temperature drive cycles. Additionally, ambient temperature is added as an input to the LSTM model.

Rear-End Impacts - Part 2: Sled Pulse Effect on Front-Seat Occupant Responses

This study was conducted to assess the effects of differing rear impact pulse characteristics on restraint performance, front-seat occupant kinematics, biomechanical responses, and seat yielding. Five rear sled tests were conducted at 40.2 km/h using a modern seat. The sled buck was representative of a generic sport utility vehicle. A 50th percentile Hybrid III ATD was used. The peak accelerations, acceleration profiles and durations were varied. Three of the pulses were selected based on published information and two were modeled to assess the effects of peak acceleration occurring early and later within the pulse duration using a front and rear biased trapezoidal characteristic shape. The seatback angle at maximum rearward deformation varied from 46 to 67 degrees. It was lowest in Pulse 1 which simulates an 80 km/h car-to-car rear impact.

Seat Belt Restraint Evidence Generated by Unrestrained Occupant Interaction in a Rollover

Assessment of the physical evidence on a seat belt restraint system provides one source of data for determining an occupant’s seat belt use or non-use during a motor vehicle crash. The evidence typically associated with loading from a restrained occupant has been extensively researched and documented in the literature. However, evidence of loading to the restraint system can also be generated by other means, including the interaction of an unrestrained occupant with a stowed restraint system. The present study evaluates physical evidence on multiple stowed restraint systems generated via interaction with unrestrained occupants during a full-scale dolly rollover crash test of a large multiple passenger van. Unbelted anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) were positioned in the driver and right front passenger seats and in all designated seating positions in the third, fourth, and fifth rows.

Real-time Detection and Avoidance of Obstacles in the Path of Autonomous Vehicles Using Monocular RGB Camera

In this paper, we present an end-to-end real-time detection and collision avoidance framework in an autonomous vehicle using a monocular RGB camera. The proposed system is able to run on embedded hardware in the vehicle to perform real-time detection of small objects. RetinaNet architecture with ResNet50 backbone is used to develop the object detection model using RGB images. A quantized version of the object detection inference model is implemented in the vehicle using NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier. A geometric method is used to estimate the distance to the detected object which is forwarded to a MicroAutoBox device that implements the control system of the vehicle and is responsible for maneuvering around the detected objects. The pipeline is implemented on a passenger vehicle and demonstrated in challenging conditions using different obstacles on a predefined set of waypoints.
