SAE J1502 specifies dimensions, performance requirements, and test procedures for the male half of a diagnostic coupler with either a metric M14x1.5 or an inch 9/16–18 straight thread stud end. The coupler is designed for use with a mineral based hydraulic fluid. It is used on machines specified in SAE J1116. It does not apply to the mating hydraulic quick action couplings not on the machine. Diagnostic couplings in accordance with SAE J1502 may be used at a working pressure of 42 MPa. The permissible working pressure depends upon the materials, design, working conditions, application, etc. Conformance to the dimensional information in this part of SAE J1502 does not guarantee rated performance. Each manufacturer should perform testing according to the specification contained in this document to ensure that components comply with the performance rating.

Testing and usage through many years confirm the performance requirements of port plugs made from carbon steel. The port plugs were specified in SAE J514 without any performance requirements. They have been developed and tested to gain a 4:1 working pressure rating for industrial applications. In fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a fluid (liquid or gas) under pressure within an enclosed circuit. In general applications, a fluid may be conveyed under pressure. Components are connected through their threaded ports by stud ends on fluid conductor fittings to tubes and pipes or to hose fittings and hoses. For threaded ports and stud ends specified in new designs in hydraulic fluid power applications, only ISO 6149 shall be used. Threaded ports and stud ends in accordance with ISO 1179, ISO 9974, and ISO 11926 are not to be used in new designs in hydraulic fluid power applications.

The September 2006 edition of SAE J514 was a single document specifying the requirements for 37° flare adapters with J1926-3 stud ends and NPTF Pipe ends, Flareless Bite Type Adapters, internal and external hex plugs, NPTF pipe adapters, and Adapter Unions. In XXXXX 2005, ISO 8434-2 was published covering the requirements for 37° Flare adapters with ISO 6149-3, ISO 1179-3, ISO 11926-3 and ISO 9974-3 stud ends.. This revision of SAE J514 adopts the connectors covered within ISO 8434-2 incorporating the rationalized dimensions from ISO 8434-2 where applicable, for the inch (ISO 11926-3 / SAE J1926-3) stud end 37° connectors, as well as fitting configurations that are not specified in the ISO standard. Formerly, SAE J514 was organized as a single document with 10 clauses, which included 6 sections. This revision of SAE J514 has been organized into three sections as follows: Part 1: 37° Flared Fittings Part 2: Flareless (Bite Type) Fittings Part 3: NPTF Pipe Fittings and Pipe Unions Internal and external hex O-ring plugs were removed from J514.

This document is an information report to help users by gathering available information from the various connector standards and publishing the information in one source for easy retrieval and applied common usage. This information report is primarily intended for mobile/stationary industrial equipment applications. Aircraft, Automotive and Aerospace applications were not considered during the preparation of this document.

In 1995 ISO 8434-3 was published covering the requirements for O-ring face seal connectors to ISO 6149-2 metric stud ends. This revision of SAE J1453 adopts the parts covered within ISO 8434-3 and the rationalized dimensions from ISO 8434-3 for both the inch and metric stud end face seal connectors.
