Use of Additive Manufacturing in Product Design & Development

2024-04-17
This presentation will address the published paper 2023-01-0892. Now for past many decades, automotive manufacturing is under perennial pressure owing to consumer aspirations, regulations, globalized competition and sustainability needs. Automotive manufactures are fiercely satisfying all of above constraints through innovative solutions. The resultant vehicles have many complex to very complex systems and subsystems to deliver the performance aspirations. In this game, one of the critical business parameter is rapid time to market. At the current state of the art, time to market directly conflicts with new product development time. Four wheeler new product development consumes upward of 48 months, while risking obsolescence of product features at the time of launch. Automotive manufacturers invest intensely in technologies to achieve this goal of short time to market.

Alternative Refrigerant Systems (R-744, R-123yf, Other Refrigerants)

2024-04-17
Currently used refrigerants for the automotive industry are not suitable for heat pump application for EVs. Hence, the future of HFO-1234yf is uncertain as it is not acceptable for EV application, specifically for heating. Also, this refrigerant is a known PFAS, a known chemical that affects human health. Automotive industry is working with refrigerant suppliers to develop an alternative refrigerant suitable for heat pump application that does not affect human health. This session will address the potential shortcomings of the current refrigerant and new or natural refrigerants that can be used as alternatives.

Additive Manufacturing - Part 2 of 2

2024-04-17
This session is seeking case-studies on the development, implementation, and optimization of designs for different strategies in additive manufacturing that include both metal and non-metallic materials. We are asking for authors to provide in their manuscript’s examples of appropriate AM technology for specific design-manufacturing applications; to identify and explain design challenges; and where appropriate showcase solutions that identify software tools, evaluate existing designs for workflow; and design parts that leverage the strengths of AM.

Presentation

2024-04-17
This talk will provide a broad brush technical overview of the wide range of automotive applications that the Simerics-MP+ three-dimensional (3D) CFD software is capable of simulating. The non-proprietary material in the presentation will be drawn from the large body of publications in the public domain. Examples applications will include areas of topical interest such as electric vehicle (EV) battery thermal analysis, electric motor thermal analysis, scroll compressors used in the heat pump, modeling of gearboxes, cooling system filling etc. Examples applications from traditional internal combustion areas such as the engine lubrication system, fuel system, cooling system will also be shared. Vehicle level applications will also be covered. Areas of physics will include a focus multiphase volume of fluid (VOF) with heat transfer as well as conjugate heat transfer.

Forty by Thirty initiative

2024-04-17
• It is an effort to address the significant shortage of engineering talent that thll face in 2030 - that is te "Thirty" in the title. • We will not close that gap without major progress in attracting women to engineering - like doubling women enrollment from less than 20% to 40% - that is the "Forty" in the title. • SAE is driving this initiative in partnership with BCG and trying to put together a broad coalition of industry, government and academia to move this forward.
