Geologic Traverse Planning for Planetary EVA

2003-07-07
2003-01-2416
We describe a process for planning planetary extravehicular activity (EVA) traverses. It enables predictive and parametric analysis of planned traverses, and would improve uncertainty management and real-time replanning of traverses by space-suited astronauts. ...It enables predictive and parametric analysis of planned traverses, and would improve uncertainty management and real-time replanning of traverses by space-suited astronauts. Using a traverse from the Apollo 14 mission as a case study we show how the same traverse might have benefited from our new approach to EVA planning. ...Using a traverse from the Apollo 14 mission as a case study we show how the same traverse might have benefited from our new approach to EVA planning. Finally, we discuss operational implementation challenges based on our experiences in the development of digital tools for geologic mapping, and on past experimentation with the NASA class III ground suit.

The Walkback Test: A Study to Evaluate Suit and Life Support System Performance Requirements for a 10 Kilometer Lunar Traverse in a Planetary Suit

2007-07-09
2007-01-3133
As planetary suit and planetary life support systems develop, specific design inputs for each system relate to a presently unanswered question concerning operational concepts: What distance can be considered a safe walking distance for a suited crew member exploring the surface of the Moon to ‘walkback’ to the habitat in the event of a rover breakdown, taking into consideration the planned extravehicular activity (EVA) tasks as well as the possible traverse back to the habitat? It has been assumed, based on Apollo program experience, that 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) will be the maximum EVA excursion distance from the lander or habitat to ensure the crew member's safe return to the habitat in the event of a rover failure.

In the three trade marks of the Peugeot S. A. Group, namely, Peugeot, Citroen and Talbot, it is above 5% of the average total weight, i.e., 50 to 70 kgs, depending upon the model. ...A brief account of recent applications and the approach taken on production run vehicles of the Peugeot S.A. Group preceeds an introduction of a lightened model developed specially in the framework of energy savings. ...This research vehicle (V.E.R.A.) shows the possible extension of plastics applications for the Group models in the 80's.

2000-01-1239
For basic research on the piston group a new simulation technique is developed using the contact algorithm of a commercial FE-code (MARC). ...The first computations, a real transient analysis simulating the piston group, of both a two-stroke engine and a modern direct injected four-stroke Diesel engine for passenger cars, show that the new method is able to calculate the movements, velocities and accelerations of the piston.

An Intensive Study on Effect of Tool Traverse Speed on Formation of Stir Zone Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir Welded HSLA Steel Joints

2022-12-23
2022-28-0521
This study examined the impact of tool traverse speed (WS) on the generation of heat and plastic swirl during Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of DMR249A steel. ...The tool traverse speeds ranged from 20 mm/min to 40 mm/min, with a constant tool rotation speed of 600 rpm and a 2.5 mm/min tool plunge rate and axial force of 15 kN. ...Of the five tool traverse speed, it is found that the welding pace of 30 mm/min resulted a defect-free sound weld with good strength and acceptable impact toughness properties.

Verification of Group Variables for Detecting Inconsistencies in Software

2015-01-0174
We term such strongly related entities as group variables. When only a subset of group variables is updated at some part of a program, it could probably be a result of some inconsistency in implementation which may lead to unexpected behavior or failure of the underlying system. ...In this paper, we present a novel application of static analysis to verify write instances of group variables. It includes - a) identification of all potential groups and their corresponding group variables, and b) verification of write operations of identified group variables. ...It includes - a) identification of all potential groups and their corresponding group variables, and b) verification of write operations of identified group variables. We have evaluated the presented technique on four real-world embedded applications for checking its effectiveness, applicability, and scalability.
