Experimental Investigation of UAS Rotors and Ice Protection Systems in Appendix C Icing Conditions

2023-06-15
2023-01-1380
If an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) encounters icing conditions during flight, those conditions might result in degraded aerodynamic performance of the overall UAS. If the UAS is not reacting appropriately, safety critical situations can quickly arise. Thereby, the rotors, respectively the propellers of the UAS are especially susceptible due to the increased airflow through their domain and the corresponding higher impingement rate of supercooled water droplets. ...The FFG/BMK funded research and development project “All-weather Drone” is investigating the icing phenomenon on UAS rotors for a 25 kg maximum take-off weight (MTOW) multirotor UAS and evaluating the feasibility of possible technical ice detection and anti-/de-icing solutions. ...If an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) encounters icing conditions during flight, those conditions might result in degraded aerodynamic performance of the overall UAS.

A Flexible Wing Unmanned Aerial Research System

2009-11-10
2009-01-3127
The project is framed within the Italian Aerospace Research Program, under the “UAV” Chapter. This UAS is mainly aimed at developing and validating advanced modeling methodologies for flexible aircrafts, where structural natural frequencies may overlap with flight dynamics frequencies. ...The vehicle will be given both remote piloting functions, either fully direct or mediated by a stability and control augmentation system, and fully autonomous flight capabilities. This UAS will also be used to provide CIRA and the whole scientific community with a valuable testing platform to support validation of flight technologies and carry out flight testing.

Recommendation of Experimental Setup and use of Standardized Electrohydrodynamic Dimensionless Parameters for Optimization of a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Flow Control Device

2014-09-16
2014-01-2101
The high demand for traditional air traffic as well as increased use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) has resulted in researchers examining alternative technologies which would result in safer, more reliable, and better performing aircraft. ...The paper listed a comprehensive set of standardized dimensionless numbers derived from the EHD conservation equations and recommended the use of these standardized parameters be used in experimental work investigating EHD systems.[1] The following paper will recommend which of the parameters require further examination for the DBD device, as well as propose experimental methods for achieving an optimized plasma actuator, with special emphasis on low altitude, low speed applications commonly encountered by the majority of fielded UAS.
