Starting and Developing an Engineering Career: The Barriers and Opportunities

There has probably never been such a demand for professionally qualified engineers, and yet both the number and diversity of people entering the profession continue to decline. Worldwide, there are very many initiatives - some generally encouraging interest in the profession, and others targeting specific audiences. The reports speak of local success, but the overall picture remains discouraging. In this paper we focus on the “pipeline” from primary education through to the transition from graduate engineer into an experienced member of engineering staff. We have based the discussion on both the presentations and comments made during a panel discussion held at the 2013 SAE International Congress. The paper is intended as a summary of the points raised during that discussion and, we hope proves to be starting point for further investigation and analysis. Of particular note is the sheer diversity of initiatives, and the pressing need for role models and mentoring.

Optimal Charging of EVs in a Real Time Pricing Electricity Market

The idea of grid friendly charging is to use electricity from the grid to charge batteries when electricity is available in surplus and cheap. There are several ways of achieving this, for example using droop control, using night time electricity tariffs, or using smart metering. The goal is twofold: to avoid putting additional load on the electricity grid and power generation, and to reduce the cost to the consumer. This paper looks at the saving potential when charging an electric car using real time tariffs provided by a smart meter, using the Ameren tariffs in Illinois as an example. If prices are known in advance (day-ahead pricing), the optimization only requires picking the cheapest time slots for charging the battery. Further savings can be made by using real time prices that are not known in advance, but the optimization problem then depends on price prediction models, and it becomes much more difficult to solve.

Elastohydrodynamics of Hypoid Gears in Axle Whine Conditions

This paper presents an investigation into Elastohydrodynamic (EHL) modeling of differential hypoid gears that can be used in coupling with Newtonian (or multibody) dynamics to study Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) phenomena, such as axle whine. The latter is a noise of a tonal nature, emitted from differential axles, characterised by the gear meshing frequency and its multiples. It appears at a variety of operating conditions; during drive and coasting, high and low torque loading. Key design targets for differential hypoid gears are improved efficiency and reduced vibration, which depend critically on the formation of an EHL lubricant film. The stiffness and damping of the oil film and friction generated in the contact can have important effects and cannot be neglected when examining the NVH behaviour of hypoid gears.

Thermodynamic Study on the Solubility of NaBH4 and NaBO2 in NaOH Solutions

Extensive research has been performed for on-board hydrogen generation, such as pyrolysis of metal hydrides (e.g., LiH, MgH₂), hydrogen storages in adsorption materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphites), compressed hydrogen tanks and the hydrolysis of chemical hydrides. Among these methods, the hydrolysis of NaBH₄ has attracted great attention due to the high stability of its alkaline solution and the relatively high energy density, with further advantages such as moderate temperature range (from -5°C to 100°C) requirement, non-flammable, no side reactions or other volatile products, high purity H₂ output. The H₂ energy density contained by the system is fully depend on the solubility of the complicated solution contains reactant, product and the solution stabilizer. In this work, an approach based on thermodynamic equilibrium was proposed to model the relationship between the solubility of an electrolyte and temperature, and the effect of another component on its solubility.

Handling Performance of a Vehicle Equipped with an Actively Controlled Differential

Vehicle handling is heavily influenced by the torque distribution to the driving wheels. This work presents a newly developed differential, designed to actively control the driving torque distribution to the wheels. The new device incorporates an electric machine, which can operate either as a motor or generator. A control unit monitors signals from various sources in the vehicle, such as steering angle, yaw acceleration and wheel rotational speed. Then, a control algorithm takes into account the steering angle rate and the vehicle speed in order to determine the suitable difference between output torque values. The handling improvement capabilities are evaluated by simulating in ADAMS/Car the driving behavior of a vehicle equipped with the new differential. The model that has been used to simulate vehicle handling is that of a Formula SAE type racing car.

A Relationship between Lift and Lateral Aerodynamic Characteristics for Passenger Cars

Aerodynamic aids, such as spoilers, applied to the rear of cars can provide drag reduction to improve performance, or can enhance high speed stability by reducing lift at the rear axle. In some cases these can be conflicting demands. It has been noted, however, that when rear axle lift is reduced there is often a reduction in yawing moment which has a beneficial effect on crosswind sensitivity. Wind tunnel results from real road vehicles are presented to illustrate this effect. This beneficial relationship is further explored in a wind tunnel experiment using simple models to represent road vehicles. Force and moment coefficients as a function of yaw angle are measured for a range of vehicle geometries which generate a substantial variation in lift. It is shown that as lift is reduced, yawing moment is also reduced, while side force and rolling moment are increased.

The Potential for Thermo-Electric Devices in Passenger Vehicle Applications

The promise of thermo-electric (TE) technology in vehicles is a low maintenance solid state device for power generation. The Thermo-Electric Generator (TEG) will be located in the exhaust system and will make use of an energy flow between the warmer exhaust gas and the external environment. The potential to make use of an otherwise wasted flow of energy means that the overall system efficiency can be improved substantially. One of the barriers to a successful application of the technology is the device efficiency. The TE properties of even the most advanced materials are still not sufficient for a practical, cost effective device. However the rate of development is such that practical devices are likely to be available within the next fifteen years. In a previous paper [ 1 ], the potential for such a device was shown through an integrated vehicle simulation and TEG model.

The Application of Particle Image Velocimetry in Automotive Aerodynamics.

Particle Image Velocimetry has developed over the last decade into a relatively mature flow-field measurement technique, capable of providing insight into time averaged and instantaneous flows that in the past have not been readily accessible. The application of the method in the measurement and analysis of flows around road vehicles has so far been limited to a relatively small number of specialist applications, but its use is expanding. This paper reviews the modern digital PIV technique placing emphasis on the important considerations required to obtain reliable and accurate data. This includes comments on each aspect of the PIV process, including initial setup and image acquisition, processing, validation and analysis. A number of automotive case studies are presented covering different aspects of the method, including a diffuser exit flow, edge radius optimization, ‘A’ pillar flow and aerial wake flows.

Foresight Vehicle: Specification and Acceptability Criteria for Copper-Clad Dielectric Materials Used in Large Automotive Flexible Printed Circuits

Flexible Printed Circuits (FPCs) have been used extensively in instrument clusters and more recently in headliners of some vehicles. Interest in large area FPCs as a replacement for traditional wiring harnesses has been propelled by the potential benefits, which include weight and space savings, ease of assembly into the vehicle, intelligence through direct mounting of electronic components, and creative design opportunities. This paper describes the development of a specification for flexible copper-clad dielectric materials to be used in the construction of a large FPC intended to replace an instrument panel wiring harness.

A Comparative Study of the Integrity of Joints Between Multilayer Fuel Line Constructions and Different Connector ‘Barb’ Designs - Part 2

Last year, McKechnie Vehicle Components established (Paper 2000-01-1098) that there were two factors influencing joint integrity between a multilayer fuel tube and the barb design of a plastic quick connector: The relationship between barb O.D. and tube I.D. The type of lining material of the tube and the overall hoop stress the tube applies to the joint after assembly. It was recommended that future work should address the following points if a full understanding of the fuel tube material to barb type is to be achieved: Assess the sealability of different materials onto a common barb type Assess a range of different barb designs to depict the optimum This year the authors have attempted to address the above points. Two conductive liquid fuel tubes of different commercial sizes (American and European) were manufactured in commercial multilayer structures. These had different material inner layers (PA12 and PBT).

Adapting Civil Aircraft Conceptual Design Methods to Account for Broader Based Constraints

As civil aircraft design matures and the viability of introducing new technological improvements diminishes, new criteria will need to be taken into account in the initial project design phase. This paper considers the overall situation and gives examples of parameters that may become more significant in future aircraft designs. These examples are taken from three different scenarios (aircraft performance, airport compatibility and public safety). The consideration of design aspects which are of a different type to traditional aeronautical engineering parameters will necessitate a change to the processes used in aircraft optimization. Methods developed and used in other disciplines will need to be combined with traditional parameters and the new broader based criteria to provide an overall assessment method. The paper concludes by suggesting a possible line of development.
