Dimensional Life of Heat-Shrinkable Sleeve

2022-05-02
CURRENT
AIR7930
This SAE Aerospace Information Report provides additional information and background in regard to the dimensional life of a heat-shrinkable sleeve. The term dimensional life is newly introduced in AS23053 to relate to the dimensional stability instead of the material stability often associated or referred to as the “shelf life.” When the material exceeds such shelf life, it becomes harmful or non-functional.

Wire, Electrical, Stranded, Uninsulated Copper, Copper Alloy, or Aluminum, or Thermocouple Extension, General Specification for

2020-09-01
HISTORICAL
AS29606A
This specification covers concentric lay stranded and rope-lay stranded round electrical conductor fabricated from copper, copper alloy or aluminum. This specification also covers thermocouple extension conductor fabricated from nickel/chromium or nickel/aluminum/manganese. The conductors in this specification are suitable for use in insulated wires used in aerospace and other applications.

Fluoride Offgassing in Fluoropolymer Insulations

2020-03-24
CURRENT
ARP6229
This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) shall be limited to information about corrosion caused by fluoride offgassing of fluoropolymer-based wire insulation. It reviews published reports of corrosion caused by this phenomenon, describes scenarios where this may be a concern, mitigation options, and references a test method which can be used to evaluate wire insulations where needed.

Test Methods for Insulated Electric Wire

2020-03-12
CURRENT
AS4373F
This standard describes test methods for insulated, single conductor, electric wire intended for aerospace applications. Particular requirements for the wire being tested need to be specified in a procurement document or other detail specification. Suggested minimum requirements are included in the notes at the end of some of the test methods. SAE Performance Standard AS4372 uses some of the tests in this document for evaluating comparative performance of aerospace wires.

Sleeve, Protection, for Cable and Harness Protection

2019-10-03
CURRENT
AS60491A
Procurement specification is principally for defining protection sleeves on a cable or group of electrical/fiber optic wires (wiring bundle). Single wire protection depends on the minimum diameter of the wire. Sleeve may be used to protect a wire bundle for a platform installation or for repair of installed damaged jacket or jacket/shielded wire bundles. Refer to AS50881 for aerospace wire bundle protection installations.

Investigation of Silver-Plated Conductor Corrosion (Red Plague)

2019-10-02
CURRENT
AIR4487B
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) shall be limited to information about a specific corrosion mechanism of silver-plated conductors that produces cuprous/cupric oxide deposits (Red Plague). It examines some possible causes and some recommendations to minimize the possibility of its occurrence. It also provides a number of reference documents that describe the corrosion in detail, methods to determine conductor damage, methods to produce the corrosion, and other investigative reports of this phenomena and their conclusions.

Insulation Sleeving, Electrical, Heat Shrinkable, General Specification For

2016-10-16
HISTORICAL
AS23053
This specification establishes the requirements for various types and colors of electrical insulating sleeving that will shrink to a predetermined size upon the application of heat. This specification includes provisions for demonstrating compliance with qualification requirements (see Section 4 and 7.3), in process inspection, and statistical process control inspections (see 4.4). The continuous operating temperature ranges for the sleeving classes covered by this specification are from -112 to +482 °F (-80 to +250 °C). The continuous operating temperature range for each sleeving class is given in the applicable detail specification.

Investigation of Whisker Formation on Tin Plated Conductors

2014-12-05
CURRENT
AIR5444A
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) shall be limited to general information about tin whisker formation on tin plated conductors. It summarizes the mechanisms of metal whisker formation and describes possible conclusions as related to tin plated conductors. It also provides a number of reference documents that describes research and observations of the whisker phenomena, recommendations to prevent its formation and conclusions. The investigation by this task group of AE-8D was initiated by a request of the Naval Air Warfare Center, Indianapolis, Indiana, to determine if the phenomenon of tin whiskers is a problem in aerospace wire and cable.
