Safe and Secure Software Updates Over The Air for Electronic Brake Control Systems

Vehicle manufacturers are suffering from increasing expenses for fixing software issues. This fact is mainly driving their desire to use mobile communication channels for doing Software Updates Over The Air (SOTA). Software updates today are typically done at vehicle service stations by connecting the vehicles’ electronic network via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) interface to a service computer. These operations are done under the control of trained technicians. SOTA means that the update process must get handled by the driver. Two critical aspects need to get considered when doing SOTA at Electronic Brake Control (EBC) systems. Both will determine the acceptance of SOTA by legal authorities and by the passengers: The safety and security of the vehicle The availability of the vehicle for the passengers The security aspect includes the necessity to protect the vehicle and the manufacturers IP from unwanted attacks.

Measures to Prevent Unauthorized Access to the In-Vehicle E/E System, Due to the Security Vulnerability of a Remote Diagnostic Tester

Remote diagnostic systems support diagnostic communication by having the capability of sending diagnostic request services to a vehicle and receiving diagnostic response services from a vehicle. These diagnostic services are specified in diagnostic protocols, such as SAE J1979, SAE J1939 or ISO 14229 (UDS). For the purpose of diagnostic communication, the tester needs access to the electronic control units as communication partners. Physically, the diagnostic tester gets access to the entire vehicle´s E/E system, which consists of connectors, wiring, the in-vehicle network (e.g. CAN), the electronic control units, sensors, and actuators. Any connection of external test equipment and the E/E system of a vehicle poses a security vulnerability. The combination can be used for malicious intrusion and manipulation.

Review of Prior Studies of Fuel Effects on Vehicle Emissions

A literature review was conducted to survey recent research on the effects of fuel properties on exhaust emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles, on-road and off-road. Most of the literature has been published in SAE papers, although data have also been reported in other journals and government reports. A full report and database are available from the Coordinating Research Council (www.crcao.org). The review identified areas of agreement and disagreement in the literature and evaluated the adequacy of experimental design and analysis of results. Areas where additional research would be helpful in defining fuel effects are also identified. In many of the research programs carried out to evaluate the effect of new blendstocks, the fuel components were splash blended in fully formulated fuels. This approach makes it extremely difficult to determine the exact cause of the emissions benefit or debit.

Development and Testing of an Innovative Oil Condition Sensor

In order to detect degradation of engine oil lubricant, bench testing along with a number of diesel-powered Ford trucks were instruments and tested. The purpose of the bench testing was primarily to determine performance aspects such as repeatability, hysteresis effects and so on. Vehicle testing was conducted by designing and installing a separate oil reservoir along with a circulation system which was mounted in the vicinity of the oil pan. An innovative oil sensor was directly installed on the reservoir which can measure five (5) independent oil parameters (viscosity, density, permittivity, conductance, temperature). In addition, the concept is capable of detecting the oil level continuously during normal engine operation. The sensing system consists of an ultrasonic transducer for the oil level detection as well as a Tuning Fork mechanical resonator for the oil condition measurement.

Empirical Modeling of Transient Emissions and Transient Response for Transient Optimization

Empirical models for engine-out oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and smoke emissions have been developed for the purpose of minimizing transient emissions while maintaining transient response. Three major issues have been addressed: data acquisition, data processing and modeling method. Real and virtual transient parameters have been identified for acquisition. Accounting for the phase shift between transient engine events and transient emission measurements has been shown to be very important to the quality of model predictions. Several methods have been employed to account for the transient transport delays and sensor lags which constitute the phase shift. Finally several different empirical modeling methods have been used to determine the most suitable modeling method for transient emissions. These modeling methods include several kinds of neural networks, global regression and localized regression.

Identification and Robust Control of LPG Fuel Supply System

This paper proposes a new returnless LPG fuel supply system designed to increase the efficiency of current LPG engines. With a conventional engine fuel supply system, the fuel pump is driven at a certain speed to pressurize the fuel to an excessive level, and excess fuel that is discharged from the fuel pump but not injected from the injector is returned to the fuel tank via a pressure regulator and a return line. This arrangement keeps the pressure in the fuel supply line at a constant level. Accordingly, during engine idling, fuel cut-off or other times when very little or no fuel is injected from the injector, nearly all the fuel discharged from the fuel pump is returned to the fuel tank via the pressure regulator and return line. Therefore, the energy (electric power) applied to drive the fuel pump is wastefully consumed. Moreover, returning a large amount of excess fuel to the fuel tank can raise the fuel temperature in the tank, causing the fuel to evaporate.

Advanced Control System of Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) Engine with Dual Piston Mechanism

A dual piston Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) engine has been newly developed. This compact VCR system uses the inertia force and hydraulic pressure accompanying the reciprocating motion of the piston to raise and lower the outer piston and switches the compression ratio in two stages. For the torque characteristic enhancement and the knocking prevention when the compression ratio is being switched, it is necessary to carry out engine controls based on accurate compression ratio judgment. In order to accurately judge compression ratio switching timing, a control system employing the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) was used to analyze vibration generated during the compression ratio switching. Also, in order to realize smooth torque characteristics, an ignition timing control system that separately controls each cylinder and simultaneously performs knocking control was constructed.

Herschel Heaters Control Modeling and Correlation

Herschel and Planck satellites have recently undergone the thermal vacuum and thermal balance (TVTB) test which was performed in the ESA-ESTEC Large Space Simulator for Herschel and in Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL) for Planck. One of the specific targets of the Herschel test was the verification of the thermal stability of two HIFI units (required to be better than 3.10−4 °C/s) and of the Star Tracker mounting plate (required to be better than 2.5.10−3 °C/s), with particular attention on the performance of the relevant feedback control loops. Control system design and model predictions are presented and compared against the test results. Further discussion on the requirement verification is provided.

Dynamic Analysis of Car Ingress/Egress Movement: an Experimental Protocol and Preliminary Results

This paper focuses on full body dynamical analysis of car ingress/egress motion. It aims at proposing an experimental protocol adapted for analysing joint loads using inverse dynamics. Two preliminary studies were first performed in order to 1/ define the main driver/car interactions so as to allow measuring the contact forces at all possible contact zones and 2/ identify the design parameters that mainly influence the discomfort. In order to verify the feasibility of the protocol, a laboratory study was carried out, during which two subjects tested two car configurations. The experimental equipment was composed of a variable car mock-up, an optoelectronic motion tracking system, two 6D-force plates installed on the ground next to the doorframe and on the car floor, a 6D-Force sensor between the steering wheel and the steering column, and two pressure maps on the seat. Motions were reconstructed from measured surface markers trajectories using inverse kinematics.

Results of Multifunctional Condensing Heat Exchanger for Water Recovery Applications

Humidity control within confined spaces is of great importance for current NASA environmental control systems and future exploration applications. The engineered multifunction surfaces (MFS) developed by ORBITEC is a technology that produces hydrophilic and antimicrobial surface properties on a variety of substrate materials. These properties combined with capillary geometry create the basis for a passive condensing heat exchanger (CHX) for applications in reduced gravity environments, eliminating the need for mechanical separators and particulate-based coatings. The technology may also be used to produce hydrophilic and biocidal surface properties on a range of materials for a variety of applications where bacteria and biofilms proliferate, and surface wetting is beneficial.

Fuel Economy Benefits of a Flywheel & CVT Based Mechanical Hybrid for City Bus and Commercial Vehicle Applications

Hybrid drivetrain systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in Automotive and Commercial Vehicle applications and have also been introduced for the 2009 Formula1 motorsport season. The F1 development has the clear intent of directing technical development in motorsport to impact the key issue of fuel efficiency in mainstream vehicles. In order to promote all technical developments, the type of system (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, etc) for the F1 application has not been specified. A significant outcome of this action is renewed interest and development of mechanical hybrid systems comprising a high speed composite flywheel and a full-toroidal traction drive Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). A flywheel based mechanical hybrid has few system components, low system costs, low weight and dispenses with the energy state changes of electrical systems producing a highly efficient and power dense hybrid system.

Main Design Factors and Unified Software Structure for Cable Puller and Caliper Integrated Type Electric Parking Brakes

The main classification of Electric Parking Brakes (EPB) can be made into cable puller and caliper integrated types. In this paper, the main design considerations that need to be made for each type of system will be examined. In terms of mechanical design, actuator design factors including target capacity, system size, and vehicle mounting will be briefly discussed. In terms of software, a unified software structure that can incorporate both types of EPBs will be introduced. This unified approach, made up of fixed and variable modules, allows for more efficient software development for both types of EPB systems. The fixed modules are related to the identical target functions regardless of EPB type, while the variable modules are made up of the different considerations that need to be made depending on the EPB type in order to meet such targets. Finally, some test results of target functions for both types of EPB systems will be given.

Stability Analysis of a Disc Brake with Piezoelectric Self-Sensing Technique

Piezoelectric self-sensing allows to measure frequency response functions of dynamical systems with one single piezoelectric element. This piezoceramics is used as actuator and sensor simultaneously. In this study, a model-based piezoelectric self-sensing technique is presented to obtain potential squealing frequencies of an automotive disc brake. The frequency-response function of the brake system is obtained during operation by measuring the current flowing through the piezoelectric element while the piezoelectric element is driven by a harmonic voltage signal with constant amplitude. The current flow is composed of the part which is required to drive the piezoelectric element as an actuator and a second part which is the sensor signal that is proportional to the vibration amplitude of the attached mechanical system. Typically the first part is dominant and the influence of the mechanical system is marginal.

Current and New Approaches for Brake Noise Evaluation and Rating

Predominant brake noise evaluation and rating was developed many years ago and no longer fulfills the need of modern development work. An extended description of a noisy brake event (European expert group guideline EKB 3006) and a standardized test data exchange format, allowing the comparison of different source test results (EKB 3008) are presented. Today's noise rating systems are described and compared by selected examples. The paper proposes an open 4 level noise rating system (EKB 3007). It starts with simple occurrence statistics, noise rating based on sound levels, situational noise rating including duration and finally based on the human perception, described by psychoacoustics.

Real Time Implementation of DOC-DPF Models on a Production-Intent ECU for Controls and Diagnostics of a PM Emission Control System

This paper describes the joint development by Tenneco and Pi Shurlok of a complete diesel engine aftertreatment system for controlling particulate matter emissions. The system consists of a DOC, DPF, sensors, controller and an exhaust fuel injection system to allow active DPF regeneration. The mechanical components were designed for flow uniformity, low backpressure and component durability. The overall package is intended as a complete PM control system solution for OEMs, which does not require any significant additions to the OEM's engine control strategies and minimizes integration complexity. Thus, to make it easier to adapt to different engine platforms, ranging from small off-road vehicle engines to large locomotive engines, model-based control algorithms were developed in preference to map-based controls.

Improving Cabin Thermal Comfort by Controlling Equivalent Temperature

An aircraft environmental control system (ECS) is commonly designed for a cabin that has been divided into several thermal control zones; each zone has an air flow network that pulls cabin air over an isolated thermocouple. This single point measurement is used by the ECS to control the air temperature and hence the thermal environment for each zone. The thermal environment of a confined space subjected to asymmetric thermal loads can be more fully characterized, and subsequently better controlled, by determining its “equivalent temperature.” This paper describes methodology for measuring and controlling cabin equivalent temperature. The merits of controlling a cabin thermal zone based on its equivalent temperature are demonstrated by comparing thermal comfort, as predicted by a “virtual thermal manikin,” for both air-temperature and equivalent-temperature control strategies.

Energy Efficiency Analysis of Monolith and Pellet Emission Control Systems in Unidirectional and Reverse-Flow Designs

The work aims at analysing the energetic performances of monolith and pellet emission control systems using unidirectional and reverse-flow design (passive and active flow control respectively). To this purpose a one-dimensional transient model has been developed and the cooling process of different system configurations has been studied. The influence of the engine operating conditions on the system performances has been analysed and the fuel saving capability of the several arrangements has been investigated. The analysis showed that the system with active reverse flow and pellet packed bed design presents higher heat retention capability. Moreover, the numerical model put in evidence the large influence of the exhaust gas temperature on the energy efficiency of the emission control systems and the significant effect of unburned hydrocarbons concentration.

Design and Validation of a Control-Oriented Model of a Diesel Engine with Two-Stage Turbocharger

Two-stage turbochargers are a recent solution to improve engine performance. The large flexibility of these systems, able to operate in different modes, can determine a reduction of the turbo-lag phenomenon and improve the engine tuning. However, the presence of two turbochargers that can be in part operated independently requires effort in terms of analysis and optimization to maximize the benefits of this technology. In addition, the design and calibration of the control system is particularly complex. The transitioning between single stage and two-stage operations poses further control issues. In this scenario a model-based approach could be a convenient and effective solution to investigate optimization, calibration and control issues, provided the developed models retain high accuracy, limited calibration effort and the ability to run in real time.

Parameter Estimation for Physical Based Air Path Models of Turbocharged Diesel Engines — An Experience Based Guidance

Physical based air path models lead to a substructuring of the highly complex engine systems into several interacting submodels of low order. They offer detailed process information, support advanced control system design and allow to significantly reduce the calibration effort. Hence, physical approaches are predestinated to cope with the rise in system complexity and with the increasingly challenging demands concerning air system performance. Whereas the basic model equations are known a general methodology to obtain the model parameters is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the identification procedure and to offer the automotive engineer helpful advice to gain well calibrated simulation models. Analysing the air path equations the determining factors on the parameter quality are investigated. Based on the results sensible modifications of the test bed setup and the measurement strategy are presented.

In several industrial fields, the integration of functions is a key technology to enhance the efficiency of components in terms of performance to mass/volume/cost ratio. Concerning the space industry, in the last few years the trend in spacecraft design has been towards smaller, light-weight and higher performance satellites with sophisticated payloads and instrumentation. Increasing power density figures are the common feature of such systems, constituting a challenging task for the Thermal Control System. The traditional mechanical and thermal design concepts are evidencing their limits with reference to such an emerging scenario.
