One of the most important safety critical components on cars, trucks, and aircraft is the pneumatic tire. Vehicle tires primarily control stopping distances on wet and dry roads or runways and strongly influence over-steer/under-steer behavior in handling maneuvers of cars and trucks. The inflated tire-wheel assembly also acts as a pressure vessel that releases a large amount of energy when catastrophically deflated. The tire can also serve as a fulcrum, both directly and indirectly, in contributing to vehicle rollover. This course covers these facets of tire safety phenomena.

This two-day course presents a process development methodology that can be used repeatedly as new compliance requirements emerge.  You will learn best practices in creating a compliance program for your products and markets, and how to use this program at all stages of product development and production.  Sample spreadsheets will be used to demonstrate tailoring the program to your product, your markets, and your organization.  A properly managed compliance program simplifies the certification or approval of your product, and ensures that you regularly apply and document good engineering practices for product safety and reliability.

Potential regulations surrounding the development, testing and commercial launch of Highly Automated Vehicles and possible liability exposure for the manufacturing and operation of Highly Automated Vehicles are fluid and changing areas, that will continue to evolve over the next several years. The first half of this course reviews where regulations are at the state and federal levels, what actions are currently under consideration, how current regulations will need to change to accommodate HAV’s, and how and when new regulations might be implemented. The second half covers both common law and strict liability and how it may apply to HAV’s.

The manner in which a motor vehicle fire is initiated and subsequently spreads is dependent on a number of complex, interdependent, phenomena including combustion kinetics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Because the damage caused by a fire is coupled to these phenomena, damage patterns can sometimes be used to understand certain characteristics about the fire. In many cases, the goal is to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Safety continues to be one of the most important factors in motor vehicle design, manufacturing, and marketing.  This course provides a comprehensive overview of these critical automotive safety considerations: injury and anatomy; human tolerance and biomechanics; occupant protection; testing; and federal legislation. The knowledge shared at this course enables participants to be more aware of safety considerations and to better understand and interact with safety experts. This course has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) for 18 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Do you know what personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and instruments are needed to keep you safe around high voltage (HV) vehicles? Are you aware of how to protect yourself or your employees when working around high voltage systems and platforms? Safety is paramount when working around any type of high voltage. As electric vehicles (EV) and EV fleets become more prevalent, the critical need for OEMs, suppliers, companies, and organizations to provide comprehensive safety training for teams working with or around xEV systems and platforms increases.

This course will introduce participants to the risks encountered in handling high voltage battery systems and their component parts. With the understanding of these risks, the course will then address how to raise risk awareness and then methods of dealing with those risks. The outcome of this course should be improved avoidance of personal injury, reduced risk of reputation loss, product liability actions and reduced risk of loss of property and time. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in a real world battery handling case study scenario in which they will identify solutions for potential risk situations.

This class will provide the student with the skills, knowledge, and abilities to interpret, analyze and apply HVEDR data in real-world applications. This course has been designed to build on the concepts presented in the SAE course Accessing and Interpreting Heavy Vehicle Event Data Recorders (ID# C1022). Advanced topics will include associating HVEDR data with collision events through timestamps, odometer logs, and data signatures, validating HVEDR speed data using specified vehicle parameters, performing time and distance analyses using HVEDR data, and correlating HVEDR data to physical evidence from the vehicle and roadway.

              Recent advances in commercial vehicle equipment have increased the potential for incident-related data to be recorded surrounding a collision event.  

The field of motor vehicle rollover research and testing has been one of multiple and varied approaches, dating back to at least the 1930's.
