Product Development for AV and EV Reliability

According to NHTSA, there were 932 vehicle recalls in the United States in 2022, affecting approximately 31 million vehicles; 39 electric vehicle recalls affecting more than 1.3 million vehicles, and 56 ADAS recalls affecting more than 4.7 million vehicles. Furthermore, Warranty Week reports that Worldwide Auto Manufacturers allocated a total of $54.7 billion for future warranty repairs or $670 per vehicle sold in 2022. 2023 Consumer Report indicates that Electrical Vehicles have 79% more reliability issues than ICE vehicles.

Fluids for Aerospace Hydraulic Systems

This four-hour short course provides an introduction to fluids for aerospace hydraulic systems. Topics covered include an introduction to basics fluid properties, rheology, tribology, and fluid product development. In addition, the history and performance of different classes of fluids are discussed in detail, and specific failure modes such as erosion and sludge formation will be described. Along with an introduction to fluid degradation, information on used oil analysis test methods and interpretation will be provided.

Tire and Wheel Safety Issues

One of the most important safety critical components on cars, trucks, and aircraft is the pneumatic tire. Vehicle tires primarily control stopping distances on wet and dry roads or runways and strongly influence over-steer/under-steer behavior in handling maneuvers of cars and trucks. The inflated tire-wheel assembly also acts as a pressure vessel that releases a large amount of energy when catastrophically deflated. The tire can also serve as a fulcrum, both directly and indirectly, in contributing to vehicle rollover. This course covers these facets of tire safety phenomena.

This four-hour short course provides an introduction to contamination control principles in aircraft hydraulic systems. Topics covered include an introduction to the types of contamination in aircraft hydraulic systems, contaminant measurement, and reporting methods. In addition, the impact of contamination on hydraulic components is discussed in detail. Along with an introduction to filtration mechanisms, information on testing, rating, and specifying filters will be provided.

Guidance for Model-Based Development and Verification (DO-331)

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. The course materials are bilingual (English and Chinese). Model-Based Development and Verification (MBDV) technology has been widely accepted in software production. When this technology is used in airborne software, key issues should be considered to ensure airworthiness and safety goals are met. To facilitate the use the MBDV technology, RTCA DO-331 is published as a supplement and guidance support to DO-178C. Because MBDV is regularly used in critical software applications, guidance is needed to apply it to airborne software.

This course is offered in China only and presented in Mandarin Chinese. Static perceptual quality is the term applied to the customer’s first impression of a car at the beginning of the buying process including how it looks, feels, and smells. This “first feeling” largely determines whether the customer continues through the purchase process. At present, OEMs have no systematic method for static perceptual quality in the whole vehicle design and development process, especially for the static perceptual quality review in the early stage of design and development before data freezing.

In the age of lightweighting, fatigue strength is an important vehicle design requirement as engineers struggle to meet stringent weight constraints without adversely impacting durability. Design of Experiments is a statistically based, structured approach to product or process improvement that will quickly yield significant increases in product quality and subsequent decreases in cost.  Products and processes can be designed to function with less variation and with less sensitivity to environmental factors or customer usage. The automated vehicle industry has been busy designing, developing, and deploying several self driving vehicles and services in the last few years. However, much of the outcomes and the overall outlook of the vehicle and services, such as robotaxis, are not great. Customers and stakeholders complain that the level of automation is low, mostly SAE Levels 1, 2, and very little of Level 3. It appears that Level 4 is far out in the horizon and many wonder if Level 5 is actually achievable.
