RTCA DO-178C  is the globally-accepted standard for civil aviation software development and certification. Compliance with the objectives of DO-178C is the primary means for meeting airworthiness requirements and obtaining approval of airborne software in TC/STC/TSO, etc. Even after study of the DO-178C, many people lack experience producing DO-178C compliant airborne software in real applications.

The automated vehicle industry has been busy designing, developing, and deploying several self driving vehicles and services in the last few years. However, much of the outcomes and the overall outlook of the vehicle and services, such as robotaxis, are not great. Customers and stakeholders complain that the level of automation is low, mostly SAE Levels 1, 2, and very little of Level 3. Potential regulations surrounding the development, testing and commercial launch of Highly Automated Vehicles and possible liability exposure for the manufacturing and operation of Highly Automated Vehicles are fluid and changing areas, that will continue to evolve over the next several years. The first half of this course reviews where regulations are at the state and federal levels, what actions are currently under consideration, how current regulations will need to change to accommodate HAV’s, and how and when new regulations might be implemented. The second half covers both common law and strict liability and how it may apply to HAV’s.
