Functional Mobility Testing: A Novel Method to Create Suit Design Requirements

This study was performed to aide in the creation of design requirements for the next generation of space suits that more accurately describe the level of mobility necessary for a suited crewmember through the use of an innovative methodology utilizing functional mobility. A novel method was utilized involving the collection of kinematic data while 20 subjects (10 male, 10 female) performed pertinent functional tasks that will be required of a suited crewmember during various phases of a lunar mission. These tasks were selected based on relevance and criticality from a larger list of tasks that may be carried out by the crew. Kinematic data was processed through Vicon BodyBuilder software to calculate joint angles for the ankle, knee, hip, torso, shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Maximum functional mobility was consistently lower than maximum isolated mobility.

An Overview of the V&V of Flight-Critical Systems Effort at NASA

As the US is getting ready for the Next Generation (NextGen) of Air Traffic System, there is a growing concern that the current techniques for verification and validation will not be adequate for the changes to come. The JPDO (in charge of implementing NextGen) has given NASA a mandate to address the problem and it resulted in the formulation of the V&V of Flight-Critical Systems effort. This research effort is divided into four themes: argument-based safety assurance, distributed systems, authority and autonomy, and, software intensive systems. This paper presents an overview of the technologies that will address the problem.

Energy Finite Element Analysis Developments for Vibration Analysis of Composite Aircraft Structures

The Energy Finite Element Analysis (EFEA) has been utilized successfully for modeling complex structural-acoustic systems with isotropic structural material properties. In this paper, a formulation for modeling structures made out of composite materials is presented. An approach based on spectral finite element analysis is utilized first for developing the equivalent material properties for the composite material. These equivalent properties are employed in the EFEA governing differential equations for representing the composite materials and deriving the element level matrices. The power transmission characteristics at connections between members made out of non-isotropic composite material are considered for deriving suitable power transmission coefficients at junctions of interconnected members. These coefficients are utilized for computing the joint matrix that is needed to assemble the global system of EFEA equations.

Assessment of Silver Based Disinfection Technology for CEV and Future US Spacecraft

Silver biocide offers a potential advantage over iodine, the current state-of-the-art in US spacecraft disinfection technology, in that silver can be safely consumed by the crew. As such, silver may reduce the overall complexity and mass of future spacecraft potable water systems, particularly those used to support long duration missions. A primary technology gap identified for the use of silver biocide is one of material compatibility. Wetted materials of construction are required to be selected such that silver ion concentrations can be maintained at biocidally effective levels.

Astrium investigates Methane Pyrolysis in the perspective of long-duration exploration missions. In particular this process, which recovers Hydrogen from Methane, allows reaching the maximum closure level of the Air Revitalization System ARES. Past studies were reviewed in the light of today's technical advancement and a technology trade-off, supported by bread boarding, is performed. Current activities do concentrate on Critical technology selection and feasibility demonstration including bread boarding and testing, Methane Pyrolysis Assembly (MPA) operational interfaces with ARES Potential applications of MPA for other exploration capabilities, like in-situ resources utilization (Moon and Mars) The paper presents the achievements so far.

Design Status of the Closed-Loop Air Revitalization System ARES for Accommodation on the ISS

During the last years extensive work has been done to design and develop the Closed-Loop Air Revitalization System ARES. The potential of ARES e.g. as part of the ISS ECLSS is to significantly reduce the water upload demand and to increase the safety of the crew by reducing dependence on re-supply flights. The design is adapted to the interfaces of the new base lined Russian MLM module as possible location for a future installation of ARES. Due to the lack of orbital support equipment and interfaces to a waste water bus, to a feed water supply line and due to the availability of only one single vent line it was necessary to make the ARES process water loop as independent as possible from the host vehicle. Another optimization effort was to match the CO2 desorption profile with the available hydrogen flow to achieve a sufficient water recovery performance, while meeting all related safety requirements, minimizing complexity and improving reliability.

Effects of Relative Humidity on the Adsorption of Dichloromethane by Carbosieve SIII

Carbosieve SIII was used to filter dichloromethane (DCM) from a simulated spacecraft gas stream. This adsorbent was tested as a possible commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) filtration solution to controlling spacecraft air quality. DCM is a halocarbon commonly used in manufacturing for cleaning and degreasing and is a typical component of equipment offgassing in spacecraft. The performance of the filter was measured in dry and humid atmospheres. A known concentration of DCM was passed through the adsorbent at a known flow rate. The adsorbent removed dichloromethane until it reached the breakthrough volume. Carbosieve SIII exposed to dry atmospheric conditions adsorbed more DCM than when exposed to humid air. Carbosieve SIII is a useful thermally regenerated adsorbent for filtering DCM from spacecraft cabin air. However, in humid environments the gas passes through the filter sooner due to co-adsorption of additional water vapor from the atmosphere.

The Service Module Thermal Tests of the ESA Herschel and Planck Satellites

European Space Agency (ESA) has planned two important missions for performing astronomical investigations in the infrared and sub-millimetre wavelength range: ♦Herschel satellite has an observatory type mission and is the fourth cornerstone mission (CS4) of the “Horizon 2000” programme. It will carry three instruments (HIFI, SPIRE, and PACS) for high and medium resolution spectroscopy, imaging and photometry over the sub-millimetre and far-infrared range. A 3.5 m telescope will focus the incoming radiation on the Focal Plane Units of these instruments. ♦Planck satellite has a survey type mission and is the third Medium mission (M3) of the “Horizon 2000” programme. It will provide a definitive high-angular resolution map of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies over at least 95% of the sky and over a wide frequency range. A 1.5 m telescope will focus the incoming radiation on the focal plane shared by the two instruments (LFI and HFI).

Assessment of Silver Based Disinfection Technology for CEV and Future US Spacecraft: Microbial Efficacy

This work describes the microbiological assessment and materials compatibility of a silver-based biocide as an alternative to iodine for the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) and future spacecraft potable water systems. In addition to physical and operational anti-microbial counter-measures, the prevention of microbial growth, biofilm formation, and microbiologically induced corrosion in water distribution and storage systems requires maintenance of a biologically-effective, residual biocide concentration in solution and on the wetted surfaces of the system. Because of the potential for biocide depletion in water distribution systems and the development of acquired biocide resistance within microbial populations, even sterile water with residual biocide may, over time, support the growth and/or proliferation of bacteria that pose a risk to crew health and environmental systems.

Testbed for Determining the Filtering Capacities of COTS Adsorbents

A lab-scale testbed for screening and characterizing the chemical specificity of commercial “off-the-shelf” (COTS) polymer adsorbents was built and tested. COTS polymer adsorbents are suitable candidates for future trace contaminant (TC) control technologies. Regenerable adsorbents could reduce overall TC control system mass and volume by minimizing the amounts of consumables to be resupplied and stored. However, the chemical specificity of these COTS adsorbents for non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) (e.g., methanol, ethanol, dichloromethane, acetone, etc) commonly found in spacecraft is unknown. Furthermore, the effect of humidity on their filtering capacity is not well characterized. The testbed, composed of a humidifier, an incubator, and a gas generator, delivers NMVOC gas streams to conditioned sorbent tubes.

Modeling and Correlation of an Actively-Controlled Single Phase Mechanically-Pumped Fluid Loop

This paper describes the transient simulation of a single-phase mechanically pumped fluid loop (MPFL) thermal control system, developed in the frame of the European Space Agency ARTES 8 (Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems - Large Platform Program) program. MPFL is intended to cool a part of the payload on a high power telecommunication satellite. A transient simulation has been implemented using ESATAN/FHTS; hence the results have been correlated with the test results, obtained from full scale MPFL testing, using real on-orbit profiles. The most considerable parts of the activities described herein are simulation of the thermal control law, verification of control parameters during thermo-hydraulic testing and the subsequent correlation.

Polar Platform Service Module Thermal Balance Testing and Correlation

The first use of the Polar Platform (PPF) is for the Envisat/PPF mission. The Envisat/PPF spacecraft has a launch mass of 8.5 tons and external dimensions of 10.0 metres x 2.8 metres x 2.1 metres. Due to it's large size it was necessary to perform the thermal balance and thermal vacuum testing in two modules. The first test was for the Service Module (SM) and the second for the Payload Module (PLM). This paper discusses the thermal balance testing and subsequent correlation of the Polar Platform Service Module thermal mathematical model.

Thermal Stability Analysis in the Frequency Domain using the ESATAN Thermal Suite

An increasing number of spacecraft missions have very stringent requirements for thermal stability to avoid thermally driven noise from affecting the main observables. For example, it may be necessary to reduce temperature fluctuations in the neighbourhood of the instrument below micro-Kelvin (μK). Consequently, the influence of fluctuations in boundary temperature or internal power dissipation on temperature at the instrument detector must be precisely evaluated. Thermal stability requirements are usually expressed as an upper limit on the linear spectrum density (LSD) of temperature fluctuations. This indicates the strength of the response to a perturbation of a given frequency, and is usually stated in units of K/√Hz. The LSD can be estimated by running a succession of transient simulations and applying Fast Fourier Transforms techniques, but this method is time-consuming and has numerical limitations.

In parallel two methods for plasma provision are investigated: Direct Current Plasma, sustained by a discharge arc rotating in a nozzle to supply energy to the flowing through carrier gas. Micro Wave (MW) Plasma, sustained by a MW within a Quartz tube embedded in a MW resonator cuboid Study activities did concentrate on Development testing of pre selected plasma Pyrolysis technology.

Columbus ECLS Activation and Initial Operations

European Space Agency's (ESA's) Columbus module was launched on February 7, 2008. This marks the completion of more than 10 years of development. It is a major step forward for Europe in the area of Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) as Columbus contains several major assemblies which have been developed in Europe. These include the Condensing Heat Exchanger, Condensate Water Separator and the Cabin Fans. The paper gives a short overview of the system and its features and it will report the experiences from the initial activation and operations phase.

Characterizing the Influence of Temperature and Vacuum Quality on the Desorption Kinetics of Commercial Adsorbents

Understanding the effects of dynamic thermal and vacuum regeneration on VOC desorption kinetics is needed for the development of regenerable trace contaminant control air revitalization systems. The effects of temperature and vacuum quality on the desorption kinetics of ethanol from Carbosieve SIII were examined using 1 hour regeneration cycles. The effect of vacuum quality on ethanol desorption was studied by exposing adsorption tubes loaded with ethanol to low pressures (1.0, 0.5, 0.3, and 0.12 atm) at various thermal regeneration temperatures (160, 100, 70, and 25 °C). At 1 atm of pressure, ethanol removal was found to increase from 2% at 25 °C, to 25% at 70 °C, to 55% at 100 °C, and to 77% at 160 °C. Decreasing the atmospheric pressure from 1 to 0.1 atm for 1 hr did not significantly enhance Carbosieve SIII regeneration at ambient temperatures (25 °C). However, heating the adsorbent at low pressures enhanced its regeneration.

ARES - ESA's Regenerative Air Revitalisation Experiment on the International Space Station

ESA has been developing regenerative physicochemical air revitalisation technology for more than 20 years. The effort is now maturing into a flight demonstration experiment which is planned to be located in the Columbus module on ISS. The experiment shall be sized for a crew of three. It will comprise a CO2 concentration assembly, a Sabatier reactor and an electrolyser. The paper describes the adaptation of ARES to the available Columbus interfaces as well as ARES development status, performances, benefits to the ISS and operational agreements with ISS partners.

The Columbus ECLSS First Year of Operations

The launch and activation of ESA's Columbus module in early 2008 marked the completion of more than 10 years of development. Since then the Columbus ECLS is operating, including its major European ECLSS assemblies such as Condensing Heat Exchanger (CHX), Condensate Water Separator, Cabin Fans and Sensors. The paper will report the experiences from the first year of operations in terms of events, failures and lessons learned. Examples of this is the description of some off-nominal situations (such as Condensate Removal and IMV Return Fan failure, and relevant troubleshooting), and the preparation to Columbus Reduced Condensation Mode, as requested by NASA in order to minimize the crew time needed to empty Condensate Water Tanks in US Lab.

Anthropometric and Blood Flow Characteristics Leading to EVA Hand Injury

The aim of this study was to explore if fingernail delamination injury following EMU glove use may be caused by compression-induced blood flow occlusion in the finger. During compression tests, finger blood flow decreased more than 60%, however this occurred more rapidly for finger pad compression (4 N) than for fingertips (10 N). A pressure bulb compression test resulted in 50% and 45% decreased blood flow at 100 mmHg and 200 mmHg, respectively. These results indicate that the finger pad pressure required to articulate stiff gloves is more likely to contribute to injury than the fingertip pressure associated with tight fitting gloves.

Design Status of the Closed-Loop Air Revitalization System ARES for Accommodation on the ISS

The Closed-Loop Air REvitalisation System ARES is a regenerative life support system for closed habitats. With regenerative processes the ARES covers the life support functions: 1. Removal of carbon dioxide from the spacecraft atmosphere via a regenerative adsorption/desorption process, 2. Supply of breathable oxygen via electrolysis of water, 3. Catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide with hydrogen to water and methane. ARES will be accommodated in a double ISPR Rack which will contain all main and support functions like power and data handling and process water management. It is foreseen to be installed onboard the International Space Station (ISS) in the Columbus Module in 2013. After an initial technology demonstration phase ARES shall continue to operate thus enhancing the capabilities of the ISS Life Support System as acknowledged by NASA [5]. Due to its regenerative processes ARES will allow a significant reduction of water upload to the ISS.
