Development of Compact Transverse Flux Motor with 2 Coils and 3 Stators

Honda has been conducting research to create a T.F. (Transverse Flux) motor with a new three-dimensional magnetic circuit in order to produce more versatile motors for HEVs. The effectiveness of magnetic circuits has been proven in principle, but there is also a clear need to improve the torque characteristics. To improve torque characteristics, the magnetic saturation needs to be reduced by creating a more even flux path area and widening the gap between the teeth. Torque characteristics were improved by designing a new stator with sufficient flux path area and distance between teeth. The new T.F. motor also has a simple structure, consisting of two winding wires and three stators. This has improved torque density.

Quantitative Representations of Aerodynamic Effects on Handling Response and Flat Ride of Vehicles

The effects of aerodynamic coefficients on handling response and flat ride were quantified. For handling response, the aerodynamic effect was quantified by analysis with linear representation and a two-wheel simulation model, using aerodynamic coefficients obtained from a full scale car wind tunnel. The correlation of aerodynamic coefficients and handling response with driving feel was also ascertained. Aerodynamic yaw moment and side-force were also converted to equivalent front and rear lift to standardize aerodynamic indexes and improve aerodynamic development efficiency. For flat ride, steady and unsteady aerodynamic effects were quantified by analysis with a two-degree-of-freedom mass-spring-damper simulation model and aerodynamic coefficients obtained from a 35% scale model wind tunnel and towing tank test. Unsteady aerodynamic force occurrence mechanism was ascertained by unsteady CFD using dynamic mesh.

Development of Injury Probability Functions for the Flexible Pedestrian Legform Impactor

The goal of this study was to develop injury probability functions for the leg bending moment and MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) elongation of the Flexible Pedestrian Legform Impactor (Flex-PLI) based on human response data available from the literature. Data for the leg bending moment at fracture in dynamic 3-point bending were geometrically scaled to an average male using the standard lengths obtained from the anthropometric study, based on which the dimensions of the Flex-PLI were determined. Both male and female data were included since there was no statistically significant difference in bone material property. Since the data included both right censored and uncensored data, the Weibull Survival Model was used to develop a human leg fracture probability function.

Prediction Technology for Motorcycle Drivability Attributed to Drive Train Characteristics

The feeling given through the vibration, which is transiently generated by the body when the throttle is beginning to be opened, is one of the important factors that affect the quality of drivability in motorcycles. This feeling is usually evaluated by subjective ratings on actual motorcycles carried out by expert riders and the specifications are decided based on those results. In this research, the subjective rating was expressed as a formula and the simulation technology of behavior prediction was constructed for the parts associated with the drive train as well as the motorcycle body. The responding time delay, the magnitude of overshoot and the vibration frequencies were extracted as highly correlated factors with the evaluation results of subjective ratings through the analysis on the characteristics of longitudinal acceleration responses of the body to the magnitude of throttle opening.

Study of Self-induced Vibration in an Operating Metal Pushing V-belt CVT

The mechanism of vibration in a metal pushing V-belt was analyzed using a simulation of the dynamic behavior of the belt in order to identify measures in response to unexpected noise occurring during CVT development. The results showed that the unexpected noise originated in self-induced vibration occurring when the elements of the belt moved in the radial direction close to the exit of the drive pulley. This paper will also discuss the realization of a method of reducing the unexpected noise.

A Study of PGM-Free Oxidation Catalyst YMnO3 for Diesel Exhaust Aftertreatment

Manganese oxides show high catalytic activity for CO and HC oxidation without including platinum group metals (PGM). However, there are issues with both thermal stability and resistance to sulfur poisoning. We have studied perovskite-type YMnO₃ (YMO) with the aim of simultaneously achieving both activity and durability. This paper describes the oxidation activity of PGM-free Ag/i-YMO, which is silver supported on improved-YMO (i-YMO). The Ag/i-YMO was obtained by the following two methods. First, Mn⁴+ ratio and specific surface area of YMO were increased by optimizing composition and preparation method. Second, the optimum amount of silver was supported on i-YMO. In model gas tests and engine bench tests, the Ag/i-YMO catalyst showed the same level of activity as that of the conventional Pt/γ-Al₂O₃ (Pt = 3.0 g/L). In addition, there was no degradation with respect to either heat treatment (700°C, 90 h, air) or sulfur treatment (600°C to 200°C, total 60 h, 30 ppm SO₂).

Kinematics Validation of Age-Specific Restrained 50th Percentile Occupant FE Model in Frontal Impact

Recently, the global increase of elderly vehicle users has become an issue to be considered in the effort of enhancing safety performance of vehicle restraint system. It is thought that an evaluation tool for the system representing properties of age-specific human body will play a major role for that. In previous research, the authors had developed age-specific component finite element (FE) models for the lower limb, lumbar spine, and thorax representing the adult and elderly occupants. However, the models have not been validated in terms of full body kinematics. It is essential for such models to be validated in terms of full body kinematics in order to ensure validity of the results of the assessment of the safety performance of restraint systems. In the present research, the adult and elderly occupant full body FE models were developed by incorporating the lower limb, lumbar spine and thorax of the adult and elderly FE models established in previous research.

Application of Load Path Index U* for Evaluation of Sheet Steel Joint with Spot Welds

An attempt was made to apply the index U* in detail analysis of load paths in structural joints under static load, using as examples coupling structures of two joined frames with hat-shaped sections, and T-beam joint structures each including spot welds, both of which are widely used in automotive body structures. U* is a load path analysis index that expresses the strength of connection between load points and arbitrary points on a structure. It was possible to identify areas making up load paths by means of the magnitude of U* values, and to clarify the areas that should be coupled in order to achieve effective load transfer to contiguous members. In addition, because it is possible to determine whether or not each section of a structure possesses the potential for load transfer using U* analysis, the research also demonstrated that U* could be used as an indicator of joint structures providing efficient load transfer.

Study of Piston Pin Noise of Semi-Floating System

This paper summarizes the piston pin noise mechanism and show the way to reduce noise level of semi-floating system. A mechanism of piston pin noise of semi-floating system was clarified by measurement of piston and piston pin behavior and visualization of engine oil mist around piston and piston pin. Piston and piston pin behavior was measured by accelerometer and eddy current type gap sensor with linkage system at the actual engine running condition. Engine oil behavior was visualized and measured its flow vector by Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). For PTV, engine oil mist particle image was taken by high speed camera with fiber scope attached to linkage system. From themeasurement, it was cleared that engine oil doesn't reach to piston hole from undersurface of piston land and come rushing out from piston broach via groove. The result shows that lacking of engine oil between piston and piston pin makes noise larger.

Optimization of Semi-Floating Piston Pin Boss Formed by Using Oil-Film Simulations

This paper describes the oil-film bearing analysis simulation was utilized for the optimization of pin boss form which reduces a piston-pin noise. It is clear from the mechanism analysis of the piston-pin noise which is the last research that an oil-film flow inside a pin boss is an important factor for pin noise reduction. So, in this research, the oil-film simulation of the piston-pin-boss bearing part was performed using oil-film bearing analysis tool. After setting up the simulation conditions of the oil-film bearing part so that actual pin behavior and high correlativity might be shown, a parameter, effective hydrodynamic angular velocity, and an oil flow rate of change suitable for evaluation of a pin noise were found out. The pin noise in semi floating piston was reduced to the same level as full floating type by applying pin boss form to which each evaluation parameter becomes the optimal to a piston.

Study on Contribution of Tire Driving Stiffness to Vehicle Fuel Economy

In recent years, the contribution of tires on vehicle fuel economy has been garnering attention. Up until now, rolling resistance coefficient (RRC) has been the standard way of measuring the amount of impact the tire has on fuel economy. We devised a new method for evaluating the impact of tires on fuel economy that incorporates the concept of tire “driving transmission efficiency” (hereinafter referred to as “driving stiffness”). In doing so, we have clarified the technology direction for contributing to the improvement of fuel economy while maintaining vehicle maneuverability by reducing RRC and improving tire driving stiffness.

New Technique for Optimizing Member Cross-Sections in Car Bodies to Reduce Noise and Weight

Currently, car bodies require further weight reduction in order to support increasing fuel economy requirements. An efficient way for light weight body design is to include body member size as a design variable in addition to part thickness. However it is currently difficult for finite element (FE) models to change member size even using current morphing techniques. To break through this challenge, a hybrid modeling approach was developed which combines shell and beam element representations of body structural members. The original member shell element thickness was decreased by 40%. Then the stiffness reduction caused by this change is offset by beam elements incorporated inside these members. These beams can represent the stiffness change due to new cross sectional dimensions or orientations without changing the original shell elements, thus avoiding modeling instabilities that can occur from morphing.

Study on Reduction of Timing Chain Friction Using Multi-Body Dynamics

A method for reducing friction loss in the engine timing chain was investigated using multi-body dynamics simulation. The method known as the link-by-link model was employed in the simulation to enable representation of the behavior of each single link of the chain and its friction due to contact. In order to predict the friction under actual engine operating conditions, a model that takes camshaft torque fluctuation and crankshaft rotational speed fluctuation into account was created. This simulation was used to verify the detailed distribution of friction in each part of the chain system as well as the changes of friction in the time domain. As a result, it was found that the sliding friction in the chain tensioner guide and chain guide was larger than in other locations. Based on this result, a method of reducing friction entirely by measures in mechanisms and structures without relying on low-friction materials was investigated.
