2022-01-0563
The diesel engine is the core in the field of engineering machine power plants. While both at home and abroad for the cold start of diesel engine, the transient emission characteristics below 0 °C and above 2000m is almost a blank. Therefore, aimed at high altitude and low-temperature environment emission characteristics of cold start, this article has carried on the systematic analysis and research. In this paper, a simulation test system for the cold start of the diesel engine at low temperature at high altitude is established. The cold start experiments of a heavy diesel engine at different ambient temperatures (10°C, 0°C, -10°C and -20°C) and different altitudes (0m, 3000m, and 4000m) is carried out. In this paper, the gas emission of the diesel engine during the speed-up period of cold start is studied.

2022-01-0628
Diesel engine is vital in the industry for its characteristics of low fuel consumption, high-torque, reliability, and durability. Existing diesel engine technology has reached the upper limit. It is difficult to break through the fuel consumption and emission of diesel engines. VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) is a new technology in the field of the diesel engines. In this paper, GT-Suite and ANN (artificial neural network) model are established based on engine experimental data and DoE simulation results. By inputting Intake Valve Opening crake angle (IVO), Intake Valve Angle Multiplier (IVAM) and Exhaust Valve Angle Multiplier (EVAM) into the ANN Model, and by using SA (simulated annealing algorithm), the optimized results of intake and exhaust valve lift under the target conditions are obtained.

The Emission of a Diesel Engine in Different Coolant Temperature during Cold Start at High Altitude

Emissions of diesel engine have been received much more attention since the Volkswagen Emission Scandal. The Euro VI emission standard has already included cold start emissions in the legislative emission driving cycles which is one of the hardest part of emission control. High altitude performance is also considered in the latest regulations which will be stricter in the future. Heating the coolant is one of the most common method to improve the cold start performance. But researches focus on the emission of a diesel engine in different coolant temperature at high altitude which up to 4500m have not been seen. The present research investigated the effect of coolant temperature on performance and exhaust emissions (gaseous and particulate emissions) during the cold start of a diesel engine. A plateau simulation system controlled the inlet and exhaust pressure to create altitude environments from 0m to 4500m, and the coolant temperature was controlled from 20°C to 60°C.

PN(Particle Number) emission limits are more stringent for gasoline vehicles in Chinese VI emission standards (6×1011 #/km). A EEPS engine exhaust particle size spectrometer was employed to characterize the effects of injection strategies on particulates emissions from a turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. The effects of operating parameters (injection pressure, second injection ratio and second injection end time) on particle diameter distribution and particle number density of emission was Investigated. The experimental result indicates that the quantity of particles decrease with the increase of injection pressure obviously, especially at high load including the 20% reduction of the particle number density. When the engine is at low load, the accumulation mode particle emissions are higher than the nucleation mode particle emissions compared with high load, which present opposite results. The second injection can restrain engine knock at low speed.

Diesel engine starts stably under extreme conditions of high altitude and low ambient temperature, which is of great significance to national economic development, national defense force and user safety. However, there are few studies on cold start performance and transient emission of diesel engines with ambient temperature below 0°C and altitude above 2000m. A simulation test system for high altitude and low temperature cold start of diesel engine is established in this paper. The cold start-up of a high-pressure common rail turbocharged heavy diesel engine discharged from the fifth stage in China at altitudes of 0m, 3000m and 4000m at 10°C, 0°C, -10°C and -20°C is studied. The ignition mechanism of diesel engine at high altitude and low temperature is put forward. The combustion characteristics of diesel engine at variable altitude and ambient temperature were studied.

With the continuous upgrading of emission regulations, NOx emission limit is becoming more and more strict, especially in the cold start phase. Passive NOx absorber (PNA) can adsorb NOx at a relatively low exhaust temperature, electrically heated catalyst (EHC) has great potential to improve exhaust gas temperature and reduce pollutant emissions of diesel engines at cold start conditions, while experimental research on the combined use of these two kinds of catalysts and the coupling mode of the electrically heated catalyst and the aftertreatment system under the cold start condition are lacking. In this paper, under a certain cold start and medium-high temperature phase, the exhaust gas temperature and emission characteristics of PNA, EHC and aftertreatment system under different coupling modes were studied.

A DMS500 engine exhaust particle size spectrometer was employed to characterize the effects of injection strategies on particulate emissions from a turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. The effects of operating parameters (injection pressure, secondary injection ratio and secondary injection end time) on particle diameter distribution and particle number density of emission were investigated. The experimental result indicates that the split injection can suppress the knocking tendency at higher engine loads. The combustion is improved, and the fuel consumption is significantly reduced, avoiding the increase in fuel pump energy consumption caused by the 50 MPa fuel injection system, but the delayed injection increases particulate matter emissions.

Optical Investigation of Lean Combustion Characteristics of Non-Uniform Distributed Orifice Passive Pre-Chamber on a High Compression Ratio GDI Engine

2024-01-2101
The passive pre-chamber (PC) is valued for its jet ignition (JI) and is suitable for wide use in the field of gasoline direct injection (GDI) for small passenger cars, which can improve the performance of lean combustion. However, the intake, exhaust, and ignition combustion stability of the engine at low speed is a shortcoming that has not been overcome. Changing the structural design to increase the fluidity of the main chamber (MC) and pre-chamber (PC) may reduce jet ignition performance, affecting engine dynamics. This investigation is based on non-uniformly nozzles distributed passive pre-chamber, which is adjusted according to the working medium exchange between PC and MC. The advantages and disadvantages of the ignition mode of PC and SI in the target engine speed range are compared through optical experiments on a small single-cylinder GDI engine.

The problem of keeping the stable starting performance of diesel engine under high altitude and low temperature conditions has been done a lot of research in the field of diesel engine, but there is a lack of research on extreme conditions such as above 2000 meters above sea level and below 0°C. Aiming at solving the cold start problem of diesel engine in extreme environment, a set of chamber system of cold start environment diesel engine was constructed to simulate environment of 3000m altitude and -20°C. A series of experimental research was conducted on cold start efficiency optimization strategy of a certain type of diesel engine at 3000m altitude and -20°C. In parallel, a diesel engine model was constructed through Chemkin to explore the influence of the three parameters of compression ratio, stroke length, and fuel injection advance angle on the first cold start cycle of diesel engine at 4000m altitude and -20°C.

2023-01-0390
The catalyzed diesel particulate filter with Pt and Pd noble metals as the main loaded active components are widely used in the field of automobile engines, but the high cost makes it face huge challenges. Rare earth element doping can improve the soot oxidation performance of the catalyzed diesel particulate filter and provide a new way to reduce its cost. In this paper, thermogravimetric tests and chemical reaction kinetic calculations were used to explore the effect of Pt-Pd catalysts doped Ce, and La rare earth elements on the oxidation properties of soot. The results shown that, among Pt-Pd-5%Ce, Pt-Pd-5%La, and Pt-Pd-5%Ce-5%La catalysts, Pt-Pd-5%La catalyst has the highest soot conversion, the highest low-temperature oxidation speed, and the activation energy is the smallest. Compared with soot, this catalyst reduced T10 and T20 by 82% and 26%, respectively, meaning the catalytic activity of Pt-Pd-5%La catalyst was the best.
