Eurocae WG-72 Activities

2012-03-16
The presentation provides an overview about the activities of Eurocae Working Group 72 (WG-72) starting with a brief synopsis of the context which suggested why such a committee should be established in 2006. It then goes into further detail about the drivers for the work of the committee, which call for the products to be delivered. It addresses some of the challenges with respect to its users. It points out that one of the lessons the committee learned was importance of the focus on the users, such that the products provide their maximum utility. Hence, the users should better be among the participants to achieve this objective. Other industries have dealt with the subject of Information System (or Cyber-Physical) Security long before this industry was forced to consider it. Consequently there are many industry standards and national or international norms, which may help to develop what is deemed needed for Civil Aviation.

Validating Time Triggered Ethernet on a Space Vehicle

2012-03-14
This presentation provides a overview of validating Time Triggered Ethernet (TTE) for use as the network to interconnect the avionics for manned Space Vehicle. The next manned Space Vehicle will use Time Triggered-Gigabit Ethernet (TT-GbE) leveraged from commercial development of TTE critical Intellectual Property. There are several validation considerations of either separating TTE segments or adding new TTE segments onto the network caused by the different phases of a manned space vehicle from pre-launch to re-entry. Considerable amount of validation testing has been successfully performed on TT-GbE/TTE. Presenter Victor Revelle, Honeywell International Inc.

Ground Based Vehicle Health Monitoring for Lifecycle Cost Reduction

2003-09-08
2003-01-2981
Unprecedented rates of change in the economic equations of air transport infrastructure are impacting military, NASA and civilian fleets. Military aero-asset operational lifespans are being continually assessed for extension, and younger assets are tasked to higher levels of mission dispatch reliability. NASA, post Columbia will now undergo a new round of safety and reliability assessments of structures and wiring on the space shuttle fleet to ensure a safe return to flight. New FAA regulations to improve aging airplane structural and wiring safety motivate comprehensive change in the approach to aviation maintenance. There are concerns that these challenges of improved reliability and life extension will further strain the resources of DOD/NASA and economic health of the civilian aviation industry.

Design Optimization of Cascade Rotary Distiller with the Heat Pump for Water Reclamation from Urine

2001-07-09
2001-01-2248
Vacuum rotary distillation is an attractive technology for water recovery from wastewater onboard a human crewed spacecraft that includes human urine and reverse osmosis brine. To reduce specific energy consumption while purifying water in the vacuum rotary distillation technology, multistage distillations, as well as thermoelectric heat pumps, are used. A theoretical approach to the calculation of the optimal number of distillation stages is given. Test results are given for a new five-stage cascaded distiller in a system with a thermoelectric heat pump. These results include the performance parameters of the system and the water quality of the product for the process of water recovery from solutions of NaCl and human urine.

Power and Thermal Management for Future Aircraft

2013-09-17
2013-01-2273
The aircraft power and thermal management system (PTMS) developed by Honeywell combines the functions of an auxiliary power unit (APU), emergency power unit (EPU), environmental control system (ECS), and thermal management system (TMS) in one integrated system. For the F-35 aircraft this approach resulted in a substantial reduction in overall aircraft size and weight as compared to configurations using separate “federated” secondary power systems. Future aircraft incorporating the new more electric architecture (MEA) and energy efficient aircraft (EEA) initiatives are likely to benefit from this integrated approach as well, but they are also likely to require increased electric power generation capability, greater cooling capacity and higher operating efficiency.

Modeling and Simulation of a Power Generation System With a High Power Generator

2013-09-17
2013-01-2126
This paper describes the modeling and simulation of a generator system using an efficient, high-speed, high power density generator that generates up to 1 MW of high voltage DC electrical power continuously and can be used for aerospace or land applications requiring large power and compact installations. This generator system simulated comprises a brushless wound field electric machine, a generator control unit (GCU) and a bridge rectifier. The purposes of the model are: obtaining simulation results to predict the behavior of the generator system during operational transients, characterizing the power quality and selecting the filters, and tuning the control parameters of the GCU.

Risk Analysis of Blockchain Application for Aerospace Records Management

2019-03-19
2019-01-1344
Blockchain as a technology has been successfully deployed in the financial industry. As the technology continues to mature, there are opportunities to use this to solve operational challenges in Aerospace. One of the common use cases is replacing paper records as a proof of compliance with a blockchain enabled distributed ledger. Commonly available open source blockchain frameworks have security ingrained in the components. However, replacing paper records with a blockchain based distributed ledger will require investigation of potential risks involved in the end to end usage of this technology for records management. The objective of this paper is to elucidate potential risks in an aviation record management workflow environment enabled by blockchain and suggest requirements to mitigate the risks.
