Postural Comfort Inside a Car: Development of an Innovative Model to Evaluate the Discomfort Level

How can car designers evaluate device’s position inside a car today? Today only subjective tests or “reachability” tests are made to assess if a generic user is able to reach devices, but it’s no longer enough. The aim of this study is to identify an instrument (index) that is able to provide a numerical information about the discomfort level connected with a posture that is kept inside a car to reach a device, by this instrument it should be possible not only judge a posture, but also compare different solutions and get rapid and accurate evaluations. In the state of the art there are many indexes developed to evaluate postural comfort (like RULA, REBA and LUBA [3, 4, 5]) but none of them has been realized to evaluate postures’ conditions that can be detected inside a car, so their evaluations cannot be acceptable.

Dynamic Analysis of Car Ingress/Egress Movement: an Experimental Protocol and Preliminary Results

This paper focuses on full body dynamical analysis of car ingress/egress motion. It aims at proposing an experimental protocol adapted for analysing joint loads using inverse dynamics. Two preliminary studies were first performed in order to 1/ define the main driver/car interactions so as to allow measuring the contact forces at all possible contact zones and 2/ identify the design parameters that mainly influence the discomfort. In order to verify the feasibility of the protocol, a laboratory study was carried out, during which two subjects tested two car configurations. The experimental equipment was composed of a variable car mock-up, an optoelectronic motion tracking system, two 6D-force plates installed on the ground next to the doorframe and on the car floor, a 6D-Force sensor between the steering wheel and the steering column, and two pressure maps on the seat. Motions were reconstructed from measured surface markers trajectories using inverse kinematics.

Waste Energy Driven Air Conditioning System (WEDACS)

In the port injected Spark Ignition (SI) engine, the single greatest part load efficiency reducing factor are energy losses over the throttle valve. The need for this throttle valve arises from the fact that engine power is controlled by the amount of air in the cylinders, since combustion occurs stoichiometrically in this type of engine. In WEDACS (Waste Energy Driven Air Conditioning System), a technology patented by the Eindhoven University of Technology, the throttle valve is replaced by a turbine-generator combination. The turbine is used to control engine power. Throttling losses are recovered by the turbine and converted to electrical energy. Additionally, when air expands in the turbine, its temperature decreases and it can be used to cool air conditioning fluid. As a result, load of the alternator and air conditioning compressor on the engine is decreased or even eliminated, which increases overall engine efficiency.

Improving Cabin Thermal Comfort by Controlling Equivalent Temperature

An aircraft environmental control system (ECS) is commonly designed for a cabin that has been divided into several thermal control zones; each zone has an air flow network that pulls cabin air over an isolated thermocouple. This single point measurement is used by the ECS to control the air temperature and hence the thermal environment for each zone. The thermal environment of a confined space subjected to asymmetric thermal loads can be more fully characterized, and subsequently better controlled, by determining its “equivalent temperature.” This paper describes methodology for measuring and controlling cabin equivalent temperature. The merits of controlling a cabin thermal zone based on its equivalent temperature are demonstrated by comparing thermal comfort, as predicted by a “virtual thermal manikin,” for both air-temperature and equivalent-temperature control strategies.

Mitigating Heavy Truck Rear-End Crashes with the use of Rear-Lighting Countermeasures

In 2006, there were approximately 23,500 rear-end crashes involving heavy trucks (i.e., gross vehicle weight greater than 4,536 kg). The Enhanced Rear Signaling (ERS) for Heavy Trucks project was developed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to investigate methods to reduce or mitigate those crashes where a heavy truck has been struck from behind by another vehicle. Visual warnings have been shown to be effective, assuming the following driver is looking directly at the warning display or has his/her eyes drawn to it. A visual warning can be placed where it is needed and it can be designed so that its meaning is nearly unambiguous. FMCSA contracted with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) to investigate potential benefit of additional rear warning-light configurations as rear-end crash countermeasures for heavy trucks.

Effect of Flash Gas Bypass on the Performance of R134a Mobile Air-Conditioning System with Microchannel Evaporator

This paper demonstrates that the implementation of Flash Gas Bypass method can improve the performance of conventional direct expansion R134a mobile air-conditioning system with a microchannel evaporator. This method uses flash gas tank after expansion valve to separate and bypass flash refrigerant vapor around the evaporator, and feed the evaporator with only liquid refrigerant. Pressure drop is reduced and refrigerant distribution is significantly improved, resulting in higher evaporator effectiveness and evaporation pressure. Both lower pressure drop and lifted evaporation pressure allows the compressor to work with lower pressure ratio, saving required compressor work. An experimental comparison of the direct expansion system shows that Flash Gas Bypass method increases the cooling capacity and COP at the same time by up to 16% and 11%, respectively.

Handling and Ride Performance Sensitivity Analysis for a Truck-Trailer Combination

A truck-trailer combination is modeled using ADAMS/Car from MSC Software for handling and ride comfort performance simulations. The handling events include a double lane change and lateral roll stability. The ride comfort performance events include several sized half-rounds and various RMS courses. The variables for handling performance evaluation include lateral acceleration, roll angles and tire patch normal loads. The variables for ride performance evaluation are absorbed power and peak acceleration. This study considers the trailer spring stiffness, anti-roll bar and jounce bumper gap as the design variables. Through DOE simulations, we derived the response surface models of various performance variables so that we could consider the performance sensitivities to the design variables.

Theoretical and Experimental Ride Comfort Assessment of a Subject Seated into a Car

A comprehensive research is presented aiming at assessing the ride comfort of subjects seated into road or off-road vehicles. Although many papers and books have appeared in the literature, many issues on ride comfort are still to be understood, in particular, the paper investigates the mutual effects of the posture and the vibration caused mostly from road unevenness. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, a mathematical model of a seated subject is validated by means of actual measurements on human subjects riding on a car. Such measurements refer to the accelerations acting at the subject/seat interface (vertical acceleration at the seat cushion and horizontal acceleration at the seat back). A proper dummy is used to derive the seat stiffness and damping.

General Modeling of Nonlinear Isolators for Vehicle Ride Studies

The advancements made in modeling and parameter identification of nonlinear isolation components in the underlying investigation confirm the importance of accurate Multibody Dynamics modeling of these components for reducing vibration and/or improving ride comfort. Considering dynamic stiffness and loss angle characteristics, the proposed nonlinear isolation component uses the Bouc/Wen hysteresis model for excitation amplitude dependency and a transfer function for excitation frequency dependency. Various combinations of Bouc/Wen hysteresis parameters result in different shapes for hysteresis loops and allows for modeling a wide range of soft and stiff isolator characteristics. The effect of the proposed isolation component on ride studies is illustrated by simulating a maneuver on a road profile using the OpenCRG road description with SimXpert Motion Workspace and Adams/Car. Tire belt dynamics are captured by adding a rigid ring part to the PAC2002 tire model [ 1 ].

Assessment of Various Environmental Thermal Loads on Passenger Thermal Comfort

Virtual simulation of passenger compartment climatic conditions is becoming increasingly important as a complement to the wind tunnel and field testing to achieve improved thermal comfort while reducing the vehicle development time and cost. The vehicle cabin is subjected to various thermal environments. At the same time many of the design parameters are dependent on each other and the relationship among them is quite complex. Therefore, an experimental parametric study is very time consuming. The present 3-D RadTherm analysis coupled with the 3-D CFD flow field analysis takes into account the geometrical configuration of the passenger compartment which includes glazing surfaces and pertinent physical and thermal properties of the enclosure with particular emphasis on the glass properties. Virtual Thermal Comfort Engineering (VTCE) is a process that takes into account the cabin thermal environment coupled with a human physiology model.

Thermal Comfort Modeling of Cooled Automotive Seats

Seat cooling systems are becoming more common as luxury features offered by original equipment manufacturers. Despite the extensive research & application of these systems, a thermal model and comfort requirements of the occupant/seat system have not been established. Without a model or thermal criteria for comfort, the seat temperature & humidity conditions required for optimal comfort can not be defined. A synopsis of the thermal comfort conditions required to achieve an occupant's subjective comfort as well as their comfort transition points are explained. In this context a model is designed specifically from a heat and mass transfer perspective between an occupant and a seat cooling system. Focus is given to the local conduction, convection, and evaporative cooling that takes place at the body to seat surface interface.

Understanding Measured Spindle Loads Differences with Advanced Tire Model

In this study, a full vehicle with advanced LMS comfort and durability tire (CDT) model was established with ADAMS software to predict the spindle loads of the vehicle under a severe proving ground rough road event. From a series of simulations with various design changes, the spindle loads sensitivities to those design changes were identified. The simulated results were also compared with the measured data and a good correlation was achieved.

Effects on Real Life Fuel Efficiency of Raising the MAC Engagement Temperature

The subject addressed by this work, currently discussed in Europe following an European Commission inquiry, is the evaluation of the possibility to prevent the MAC (Mobile Air Conditioning) use below 18°C and its benefits in terms of CO2 emissions saving. This strategy, while providing an uncertain fuel consumption saving, has to be faced with basic safety and cabin comfort conditions. The OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) may evaluate to address these concerns by controlling the cabin absolute humidity content. In order to maintain safety it should be acceptable to turn the AC on based on other inputs, such as air distribution modes (defrost or floor/defrost), windshield wiper usage, rear defroster usage, etc. FGA (FIAT Group Automobiles) exploited our proprietary prediction tool to assessing the yearly fuel efficiency that can be achieved in real use by means of the testing results of representative vehicles.

Flow and Pressure Drop Characteristics for Various Non-Circular Curved Ducts Used in Automobile HVAC System with Different Bend Angles

Non-circular ducts with strong curvature is commonly used in automobile HVAC system. The geometric cross section of the duct along with the bend angle plays a significant role in pressure drop. The present work aims at computationally analyzing the effect of eight different geometric cross-section ducts with different bend angles ranging from 0 degree to 135 degree on flow and pressure drop characteristics. A comparative study with different duct geometry and the bend angle is performed using fluent code. The effect of duct geometric cross section on secondary velocity and the total pressure loss coefficient for various duct geometries are discussed in detail. It is observed that the curvature of outer wall, slope of top wall and bottom wall plays a significant role in total pressure drop. It is found that the Rectangle-B and Triangle ducts are more sensitive to bend angle whereas Rectangle-A and Semicircle-A are least sensitive to bend angle in terms of total pressure drop.

A Study of Drying-Up Friction and Noise of Automotive Accessory Belt

Multiple-ribbed V belts have been widely used in automotive accessory drive systems to transmit power from crankshaft to power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning (A/C) compressor. Overload under severe environmental conditions can lead to excessive slippage in the belt pulley interface in poorly designed accessory drive systems. This can lead to undesirable noise that increases warranty cost substantially. The mechanisms of this tribology phenomenon, noise features and system response are of utmost interest to the accessory drive system engineers. As accessory belt systems are usually used in ambient condition, the presence of water or moisture on belt is unavoidable under rainy or highly humid conditions. It has been found that the wet friction with negative coefficient of friction (cof)-velocity slope can lead to self-excited vibrations and squeal noise.

Scalable Complexity Simulation in the Electric Vehicle Thermal Management Development Process

In order to provide efficient thermal management for an electric vehicle, the development of the cooling and conditioning system has to start early on in the overall product development cycle. This means that the first simulation models have to make do with relatively few actual data, mostly based on concepts and design studies. Accordingly the possible results are mainly useable for early on feasibility assessments. With more data and more details available, these simulation models gradually evolve, until in the end the overall cooling system is modeled with a relatively high level of detail. This allows e.g. transient analysis of warm-up or cool-down runs, simulation of driving cycles, implementation and optimization of control strategies. Although this basic workflow is true both for ICE and electric vehicles, for the latter specific topics like battery thermal management and HVAC integration add to the overall complexity.

A New Adaptive Controller for Performance Improvement of Automotive Suspension Systems with MR Dampers

A control algorithm is developed for active/semi-active suspensions which can provide more comfort and better handling simultaneously. A weighting parameter is tuned online which is derived from two components - slow and fast adaptation to assign weights to comfort and handling. After establishing through simulations that the proposed adaptive control algorithm can demonstrate a performance better than some controllers in prior-art, it is implemented on an actual vehicle (Cadillac STS) which is equipped with MR dampers and several sensors. The vehicle is tested on smooth and rough roads and over speed bumps.

Adapted Development Process for Security in Networked Automotive Systems

Future automotive systems will be connected with other vehicles and information systems for improved road safety, mobility and comfort. This new connectivity establishes data and command channels between the internal automotive system and arbitrary external entities. One significant issue of this paradigm shift is that formerly closed automotive systems now become open systems that can be maliciously influenced through their communication interfaces. This introduces a new class of security challenges for automotive design. It also indirectly impacts the safety mechanisms that rely on a closed-world assumption for the vehicle. We present a new security analysis approach that helps to identify and prioritize security issues in automotive architectures. The methodology incorporates a new threat classification for data flows in connected vehicle systems.

Method for Measuring and Analyzing the Transfer Path of Acoustic Phenomena into the Driver Cabin of a Battery Electric Vehicle

The driving comfort is an important factor for buying decisions. Especially for battery electric vehicles (BEV) the acoustic quality is an elementary distinguishing feature, since the masking of an internal combustion engine (ICE) is no longer present. Opposing the importance of the acoustic quality is the lack of knowledge of how to measure and interpret the high frequency noise generated by an electric powertrain with respect to the NVH behavior influencing the passengers [1, 2]. In this contribution a method for measuring and interpreting the transfer path of acoustic phenomena from the drivetrain of a battery electric vehicle into the passenger cabin is presented. Due to the lack of masking by the ICE in case of BEV, high frequency phenomena must be considered as well. In order to determine the airborne transfer function from the electric powertrain to the driver cabin, a dodecahedral speaker is used for reciprocal measurements.

Investigation of Tire-Road Noise with Respect to Road Induced Wheel Forces and Radiated Airborne Noise

Low interior noise levels in combination with a comfortable sound is an important task for passenger cars. Due to the reduction of many noise sources over the last decades, nowadays tire-road noise has become one of the dominant sources for the interior noise. Especially for manufactures of luxury cars, the reduction of tire-road noise is a big challenge and therefore a central part of NVH development. The knowledge of the noise transmission behavior based on the characteristics of the relevant sources is a fundamental of a modern NVH - development process. For tire-road noise the source characteristics can be described by wheel forces and radiated airborne noise. In combination with the related vehicle transfer functions it is possible to describe the noise transmission behavior in detail. A method for estimating wheel forces and radiated airborne noise is presented.
