In today's aerospace industry, product life-cycles are often being extended far beyond a product's original design expectations. With fewer and fewer new aerospace products being introduced into the marketplace, there is a dramatic need for increased emphasis on supporting these products in the most efficient and effective manner possible throughout the entire product life-cycle. In addition to the initial product acquisition cost, customers are becoming more aware and sensitive to the product's total life-cycle cost.

Fastener experts believe that upwards of 95% of all fastener failures are the result of either the wrong fastener for the job or improper installation. Whether this shocking figure is accurate or not, it is irrefutable that threaded fasteners are poorly misunderstood by many in both the fastener and user communities. In October 1990 the USS Iwo Jima suffered a catastrophic steam valve accident minutes after leaving port following repairs to its steam plant. In one of the single most deadly events of Operation Desert Storm, ten of the eleven crewmen present in the engine compartment would lose their lives.

The rapidly evolving demand for cost reductions and shrinking budgets makes the application and use of automated processes within the aerospace and space industries a necessity. While some view aerospace automation as the solution to reducing costs, others view automation technologies and processes as something that should be avoided when possible. Misunderstandings and assumptions about these complex systems can result in the improper selection and application of these systems, often leading to undesirable interactions with other elements of the assembly process and potentially, project failure.

Every year, the U.S. experiences more than 32,000 traffic deaths and over 3.8 million crash injuries. While the trend in traffic deaths has been downward for the past decade, most of this reduction has been the result of optimizing passive occupant crash protection systems such as seatbelts and airbags. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) now offer the potential to significantly reduce or eliminate most vehicle crashes by perceiving a dangerous situation before the crash has occurred and taking action to avoid or mitigate the crash.
