Modeling and Simulation of an Electric Warship Integrated Engineering Plant

A layered approach to the simulation of dynamically interdependent systems is presented. In particular, the approach is applied to the integrated engineering plant of a notional all-electric warship. The models and parameters of the notional ship are presented herein. This approach is used to study disruptions to the integrated engineering plant caused by anti-ship missiles. Example simulation results establish the effectiveness of this approach in examining the propagation of faults and cascading failures throughout a dynamically interdependent system of systems.

Maximum Torque Per Ampere Induction Motor Drives - an Alternative to Field-Oriented Control

In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed which is simple in structure and has the straightforward goal of minimizing the stator current amplitude for a given load torque. It is shown that the resulting induction motor efficiency is reasonably close to optimal and that the approach is insensitive to variations in rotor resistance. Although the torque response is not as fast as in field-oriented control strategies, the response is reasonably fast. In fact, if the mechanical time constant is large relative to the rotor time constant, which is frequently the case, the sacrifice in dynamic performance is insignificant relative to FO strategies.

High State Count Power Converters: an Alternate Direction in Power Electronics Technology

The general trend in power electronics devices has been to switch power semiconductors at increasingly high frequencies in order to minimize harmonics and reduce passive component sizes. However, the increase in switching frequency increases the switching losses which become especially significant at high power levels. One approach to avoiding these losses is to utilize soft switching converters. However, this typically increases converter cost due to higher power electronics requirements and additional passive components. An alternate approach is to utilize high state count converters which use a large number of semiconductor devices to provide a high number of possible switching states. This allows lower switching frequency operation for a given performance, thus reducing switching frequency and reducing switching losses. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of high state count converters as an alternative to soft switched technologies.

This paper illustrates the application of the generalized immittance space approach to the analysis of multi-bus interconnected power electronics based power distribution system. The paper sets forth the basic classifications of power converters in regard to stability analysis, a set of network reduction transformations, and illustrates the use of these reductions in order to analyze the stability of a zonal dc distribution system.

Analysis and Simulation of a UAV Power System

Models for the components of a long-duration UAV power system are set forth. The models include the solar array, solar array power converter, fuel cell and electrolyzer system and corresponding power converter, and propulsion load. Based on these models, a power management control is derived, which when coupled with the component models, are used to simulate power system performance during start-up, through a day-night cycle, and through a solar eclipse.

Analysis of Switched Capacitive Machines for Aerospace Applications

Electric machinery is typically based upon the interaction of magnetic fields and current to produce electromagnetic force or torque. However, force and torque can also be produced through the use of electric fields. The purpose of this investigation is to briefly analyze the use of a switched capacitance electric field based machine to see if it may have aerospace applications for use as either propulsion motor for unmanned aerospace vehicle (UAV) or lightweight flywheel applications for aerospace applications. It is shown that although its use as a hub propulsion motor is not feasible, it may be a candidate for use in a power flywheel energy storage system.

Power electronics based power distribution systems are inherently nonlinear often behaving as constant power loads. Stability analysis of such systems typically is limited to local behavior. Herein polytopic modeling techniques are presented. Classification of polytopic model equilibrium points is made and methods of determining uniform asymptotic stability are presented.

A Detailed Synchronous Machine Model

A synchronous machine model is set forth that simultaneously incorporates magnetizing path saturation, leakage saturation, and transfer function representations of the rotor circuits. A parameter identification procedure consisting of voltage step tests as well as standstill frequency response tests is described. The model's predictions are validated using the Naval Combat Survivability Generation and Propulsion test bed.

Average Value Modeling of Finite Inertia Power Systems with Harmonic Distortion

Typically, average-value models of power system components neglect harmonic information. Herein, a systematic method of including harmonic information in average-value models based on the theory of multiple reference frames is set forth. Computer simulation results show that when there is significant harmonic distortion of the ac distribution bus the models presented herein are more accurate than traditional average-value models. Furthermore, much of the computational advantage of average-value techniques over detailed modeling techniques is retained.
