Herschel Heaters Control Modeling and Correlation

Herschel and Planck satellites have recently undergone the thermal vacuum and thermal balance (TVTB) test which was performed in the ESA-ESTEC Large Space Simulator for Herschel and in Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL) for Planck. One of the specific targets of the Herschel test was the verification of the thermal stability of two HIFI units (required to be better than 3.10−4 °C/s) and of the Star Tracker mounting plate (required to be better than 2.5.10−3 °C/s), with particular attention on the performance of the relevant feedback control loops. Control system design and model predictions are presented and compared against the test results. Further discussion on the requirement verification is provided.

Thermal Design of the Mercury Transfer Module

This paper will describe the Thermal Control Subsystem of the Mercury Transfer Module of the BepiColombo mission. BepiColombo is an Interdisciplinary Cornerstone Mission to the planet Mercury, in collaboration between ESA and ISAS/JAXA of Japan, due for launch in 2014. The mission will be undertaken by a stack of three distinct spacecraft modules, including two scientific orbiters, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO). The third entity, the subject of this paper, is the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM).

Comparative Configurations for Lunar Lander Habitation Volumes: 2005-2008

This paper presents an overview of the progression of the contemplated candidate volumes for the Lunar Lander since the beginning of the Vision for Space Exploration in 2004. These sets of data encompass the 2005 Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), the 2006 Request for Information on the Constellation Lunar Lander, the 2007 Lander Design Analysis Cycle −1 (LDAC-1) and the 2008 Lunar Lander Development Study (LLDS). This data derives from Northrop Grumman Corporation analyses and design research. A key focus of this investigation is how well the lunar lander supports crew productivity.

Analyses of Several Space Radiation-Mitigating Materials: Computational and Experimental Results

Long-term exposure to the space radiation environment poses deleterious effects to both humans and space systems. The major sources of the radiation effects come from high energy galactic cosmic radiation and solar proton events. In this paper we investigate the radiation-mitigation properties of several shielding materials for possible use in spacecraft design, surface habitats, surface rovers, spacesuits, and temporary shelters. A discussion of the space radiation environment is presented in detail. Parametric radiation shielding analyses are presented using the NASA HZETRN 2005 code and are compared with ground-based experimental test results using the Loma Linda University Proton Therapy facility.

Using Designing for Human Variability to optimize Aircraft eat Layout

Integrating the seemingly divergent objectives of aircraft seat configuration is a difficult task. Aircraft manufacturers look to design seats to maximize customer satisfaction and in-flight safety, but these objectives can conflict with the profit motive of airline companies. In order to boost revenue by increasing the number of passengers per aircraft, airline companies may increase seat height and decrease seat pitch. This results in disaccommodation of a greater percentage of the passenger population and is a reason for rising customer dissatisfaction. This paper describes an effort to bridge this gap by incorporating digital human models, layout optimization, and a profit-maximizing constraint into the aircraft seat design problem. A simplified aircraft seat design experiment is conceptualized and its results are extrapolated to an airline passenger population.

Effect of Illumination Angle on the Performance of Dusted Thermal Control Surfaces in a Simulated Lunar Environment

JSC-1A lunar simulant has been applied to AZ93 and AgFEP thermal control surfaces on aluminum substrates in a simulated lunar environment. The temperature of these surfaces was monitored as they were heated with a solar simulator using varying angles of incidence and cooled in a 30 K coldbox. Thermal modeling was used to determine the solar absorptivity (a) and infrared emissivity (e) of the thermal control surfaces in both their clean and dusted states. It was found that even a sub-monolayer of dust can significantly raise the α of either type of surface. A full monolayer can increase the α/ε ratio by a factor of 3–4 over a clean surface. Little angular dependence of the α of pristine thermal control surfaces for both AZ93 and AgFEP was observed, at least until 30° from the surface. The dusted surfaces showed the most angular dependence of α when the incidence angle was in the range of 25° to 35°.

International Space Station United States Operational Segment Crew Quarters On-orbit vs. Design Performance Comparison

The International Space Station (ISS) United States Operational Segment (USOS) received the first two permanent ISS Crew Quarters (CQ) on Utility Logistics Flight Two (ULF2) in November 2008. As many as four CQs can be installed in the Node 2 element to increase the ISS crew member size to six. The CQs provide crew members with private space that has enhanced acoustic noise mitigation, integrated radiation-reduction material, communication equipment, redundant electrical systems, and redundant caution and warning systems. The rack-sized CQ system has multiple crew member restraints, adjustable lighting, controllable ventilation, and interfaces that allow each crew member to personalize his or her CQ workspace. The deployment and initial operational checkout during integration of the ISS CQ to Node 2 is described in this paper.

Minimum Functionality Lunar Habitat Element Design: Requirements and Definition of an Initial Human Establishment on the Moon

This paper summarizes the activities of the University of Maryland Space Systems Laboratory in performing a design study for a minimum functionality lunar habitat element for NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate. By creating and deploying a survey to personnel experienced in Earth analogues, primarily shipboard and Antarctic habitats, a list of critical habitat functions was established, along with their relative importance and their impact on systems design/implementation. Based on a review of relevant past literature and the survey results, four habitat concepts were developed, focused on interior space layout and preliminary systems sizing. Those concepts were then evaluated for habitability through virtual reality (VR) techniques and merged into a single design. Trade studies were conducted on habitat systems, and the final design was synthesized based on all of the results.

Sustained Salad Crop Production Requirements for Lunar Surface

A long-duration lunar outpost will rely entirely upon imported or preserved foods to sustain the crew during early Lunar missions. Fresh, perishable foods (e.g. salad crops) would be consumed by the crew soon after delivery by the re-supply missions, and can provide a supplement to the diet rich in antioxidants (bioprotectants) that would serve as a countermeasure to radiation exposure. Although controlled environment research has been carried out on the growth of salad crops under a range of environmental conditions, there has been no demonstration of sustainable production in a flight-like system under conditions that might be encountered in space. Several fundamental challenges that must be overcome in order to achieve sustained salad crop production under the power, volume and mass constraints of early Lunar outposts include; growing multiple species, sustaining productivity through multiple plantings, and minimizing time for crew operations.

Data Abstraction Architecture for Monitoring and Control of Lunar Habitats

A Lunar habitat will be highly sensored and generate large amounts of data or telemetry. For this data to be useful to humans monitoring these systems and to automated algorithms controlling these systems it will need to be converted into more abstract data. This abstracted data will reflect the trends, states and characteristics of the systems and their environments. Currently this data abstraction process is manual and ad hoc. We are developing a Data Abstraction Architecture (DAA) that allows engineers to design software processes that iteratively convert habitat data into higher and higher levels of abstraction. The DAA is a series of mathematical or logical transformations of telemetry data to provide appropriate inputs from a hardware system to a hardware system controller, system engineer, or crew. The DAA also formalizes the relationships between data and control and the relationships between the data themselves.

DRESS: Distributed and Redundant Electro-mechanical Nose Wheel Steering System

Scope of the DRESS project is to research, develop and validate a distributed and redundant electrical steering system technology for an aircraft nose landing gear. The new system aims to: • reduce system weight at aircraft level, replacing the current hydraulic actuation system with an electric one. • improve aircraft safety, achieving higher system redundancy levels compared to the current technology capabilities. This paper presents an outline of different activities occurring in the DRESS project and also shows preliminary results of the new system performance.

Highly Flexible Automated Manufacturing of Composite Structures Consisting of Limp Carbon Fibre Textiles

Due to the conventional autoclaving of pre-impregnated materials causes high costs in the production of carbon fibre structures, new injection methods have become more and more relevant. The research project “CFK-Tex” focuses on the automated handling and processing of preforms out of dry carbon fibre textiles. Regarding the advantages in quality improvement and process time, an automation of all process steps is getting enforced. The major challenge, in addition to the difficult handling-properties of the materials and high quality demands, is the enormous variety of outline variants caused by small production quantities but many different textile cuts per part. In the first step the requirements of an automated system are exactly analyzed considering the specific material properties as well as process and product based characteristics.

Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation of Collaborative Air Traffic Flow Management using Brahms

The air traffic demand on the US national airspace frequently exceeds its available capacity. In current operations, the Air Traffic Service Provider designs and implements air traffic management initiatives with minimal interaction with the airlines. NASA and its partners have developed a new collaborative air traffic flow management concept of operations that involves the users of the airspace to a greater degree. In this paper, we describe an agent-based simulation of the new concept of operations and our planned experimentation to determine if the new concept of operations will lead to better utilization of the national airspace.

The Potential for Fibre Alignment in the Manufacture of Polymer Composites from Recycled Carbon Fibre

This paper studies the feasibility and potential benefits of aligning recycled carbon fibres, in the form of short individual filaments, to manufacture fibre reinforced polymer composites. A review of fibre alignment processes is presented to provide insight into the different alignment technologies. The main focus is on wet hydrodynamic processes, which offer a high degree of alignment for discontinuous fibres. The process parameters that govern the alignment efficiency are also reported. The effect of alignment on fibre packing efficiency in the manufacture of composites is included, together with a report of preliminary fibre alignment results obtained from three different alignment processes.

Characterization of the Tau Parallel Kinematic Machine for Aerospace Application

A consortium of interested parties has conducted an experimental characterization of two Tau parallel kinematic machines which were built as a part of the EU-funded project, SMErobot1. Characteristics such as machine stiffness, work envelope, repeatability and accuracy were considered. This paper will present a brief history of the Tau parallel machine, the results of this testing and some comment on prospective application to the aerospace industry.

Managing Aircraft Simulation Requirements with Content-Based Image Retrieval

Requirements analysis for aircraft simulators is often driven by photographs and videos of the actual aircraft. An engineer may gather and organize hundreds or even thousands of source photos of various instruments and devices unique to the aircraft. Managing all of this source information and referencing it to generate software requirements can be challenging and time-consuming. This paper explores Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) techniques to automatically process and search those images to generate basic requirements and to facilitate reuse. An unsupervised clustering algorithm groups source images based on minimal user input. Images processed in this way can also be queried by image similarity, thereby allowing project managers to find common source material among projects. The effectiveness of these techniques is demonstrated on an example cockpit.

N-Dimensional Market Maps

This paper proposes that the law of value and demand better characterizes market activity than the law of supply and demand. The law of value and demand states that attributes determine value; value determines price; and that price determines demand. This mandates four-dimensional systems for all markets. The simultaneous analysis of four disparate markets reveals a statistically significant geometric system in 13 dimensions. This forms the framework for an n-dimensional model of the global economy, first revealed in this paper. The conclusion is that this law satisfactorily explains many economic phenomena that the law of supply and demand cannot.

Beyond Identification – High Memory RFID in Aviation

The RFID on Parts Project Team has recently completed and approved Spec 2000 Chapter 9, “RFID on Parts”. Once approved by the ATA e-Business Steering Group, this standard will allow for archiving and sharing part history information directly on RFID tags using the User Memory Bank. Using a structure similar to a File Storage System, this standard organizes tag data in a structured and indexed system so that information can be shared among all members of the supply chain. Now that high memory, passive tags are becoming available, when used in conjunction with the “RFID on Parts” standard, they make it possible to tag parts not just with an identification number, but with birth records, a full history of maintenance activities and user archives. Since end users and maintenance organizations will no longer need to rely solely on information retrieved from a centralized database, new processes and efficiencies can be realized.

Modeling of Fastener Kitting Logistics for Boeing Wide Body Airplanes

At Boeing’s commercial aircraft production in Everett Washington, the organization that supplies parts to the factory floor (known internally as Company 625) is revising their methods. A new process will deliver parts in kits that correspond to the installation plans used by the mechanics. Several alternative methods are under review. The authors used simulation methods to evaluate and compare these alternatives. This study focuses on the category of parts known as standard fasteners (‘standards’). Through direct observation, interviews with experts, as well as time and motion study, the process flow of the kitting operation was mapped A simulation model was created using the simulation software ARENA to examine two scenarios: the current kitting operation in the factory cribs and the proposed centralization of kitting operation in the Company 625.

The Systems Engineering Relationship between Qualification, Environmental Stress Screening and Reliability

The Systems Engineering Relationship between Qualification, Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), and Reliability is often poorly understood: as a consequence resources are expended on efforts that degrade inherent hardware reliability and vitiate reliability predictions. This article expatiates on the Systems Engineering relationship between Qualification and ESS, and how their proper application enhances inherent reliability and supports credible reliability predictions. Examples of how their uninformed application degrades inherent hardware reliability and vitiates reliability predictions, and how program/equipment managers can avoid this, are presented.
