A Quantitative Risk Analysis for AeroMACS Network Security in SESAR

The growing need for an efficient worldwide airspace system management, generated by an increasing traffic load, requires new capabilities for air-ground data communication technologies. In order to cope with these requirements, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), EUROCONTROL, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have jointly made specific recommendations for candidate technologies for the airport surface communication network. In the SESAR project, the Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS) technology is being developed in such a way to provide next generation broadband and wireless data communications for airport surface applications (i.e. Air Traffic Control ? ATC, Airline Operational Communications ? AOC, and surface vehicles services).

Viewers are virtually taken to labs and research centers to learn how design engineers are enhancing product performance/reliability, reducing cost, improving quality, safety or environmental impact, and achieving regulatory compliance. The quality of fluids used in aviation, such as oil or fuel, is an extremely important safety issue. One way to reliably monitor fluids is through the use of special measurement sensors. In the episode “Fluid Measurements and Avionics” (9:13), an engineer at Meggitt demonstrates the capabilities of time-domain reflectometry sensors, explaining how they are assembled and used. The business case for monitoring oil and fuel degradation, and how to proactively take advantage of preventative maintenance is also explained.

Fiber Optic Strain Sensor Standardization - International and European Activities

With the increased demand for high volume, cost-effective, fiber-reinforced thermoplastic parts, the lack of high throughput systems has become more pronounced. Thermoforming as a method to generate complex shapes from a flat preform is dependable and fast. In order to use readily available, standard unidirectional impregnated thermoplastic tape in this process, a flat perform must be created prior to the thermoforming step. Formerly, creating the preform by hand layup was a time consuming and therefore costly, step. Fiberforge�?s patented RELAY� technology overcomes the challenges of handling thermoplastic prepreg tape and provides a solution through the automated creation of a flat preform, referred to as a Tailored Blank?. Producing a part for thermoforming with accurate ply orientation and scrap minimization is now as simple as loading a material spool followed by a pressing a start button. Design and Flight Test of a Primary Flight Display Combined Vision System

Electroimpact Automatic Fiber Placement (AFP) machines lay-up composite parts by accurately placing carbon fiber tow (strips of impregnated carbon fiber) on a mould. In order to achieve high accuracy at high speeds, the processes of feeding and cutting tows must be tuned. Historically, the tuning has been a time-consuming, manual process. This paper will present a methodology to replace manual measurements with an automated laser, improve measurement speed by an order of magnitude, improve accuracy from +/? 0.020? Evaluation of Workload and Performance during Primary Flight Training with Motion Cueing Seat in an Advanced Aviation Training Device

Abstract The use of simulation is a long-standing industry standard at every level of flight training. Historically, given the acquisition and maintenance costs associated with such equipment, full-motion devices have been reserved for advanced corporate and airline training programs. The Motion Cueing Seat (MCS) is a relatively inexpensive alternative to full-motion flight simulators and has the potential to enhance the fixed-base flight simulation in primary flight training. In this article, we discuss the results of an evaluation of the effect of motion cueing on pilot workload and performance during primary instrument training. Twenty flight students and instructors from a collegiate flight training program participated in the study. Each participant performed three runs of a basic circuit using a fixed-base Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) and an MCS.

Neural Partial Differentiation-Based Estimation of Terminal Airspace Sector Capacity

Abstract The main focus of this article is the online estimation of the terminal airspace sector capacity from the Air Traffic Controller 0ATC) dynamical neural model using Neural Partial Differentiation (NPD) with permissible safe separation and affordable workload. For this purpose, a primarily neural model of a multi-input-single-output (MISO) ATC dynamical system is established, and the NPD method is used to estimate the model parameters from the experimental data. These estimated parameters have a less relative standard deviation, and hence the model validation results show that the predicted neural model response is well matched with the intervention of the ATC workload. Moreover, the proposed neural network-based approach works well with the experimental data online as it does not require the initial values of model parameters, which are unknown in practice.

Flight Performance Envelope for an Aircraft with a Fixed-Pitch Propeller

Abstract A flight envelope for aircraft performance in the vertical plane illustrates the performance limitations on the aircraft, usually indicating the minimum and maximum airspeeds at a given altitude, the airspeeds for maximum rate of climb and maximum angle of climb at a given altitude, and the maximum altitude or absolute ceiling of the aircraft. This study outlines the procedure for constructing a vertical-plane flight performance aircraft for an aircraft with a fixed-pitch propeller, which involves additional complexities due to the variable propeller efficiency. The propeller performance, engine power, and drag polar models are described, as is the computational procedure. Envelopes for the flight performance in the vertical plane are presented for a particular remotely-piloted aircraft at different take-off weights.

This paper presents an overview of the progression of the contemplated candidate volumes for the Lunar Lander since the beginning of the Vision for Space Exploration in 2004. These sets of data encompass the 2005 Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), the 2006 Request for Information on the Constellation Lunar Lander, the 2007 Lander Design Analysis Cycle −1 (LDAC-1) and the 2008 Lunar Lander Development Study (LLDS). This data derives from Northrop Grumman Corporation analyses and design research. A key focus of this investigation is how well the lunar lander supports crew productivity.

Sustained Salad Crop Production Requirements for Lunar Surface

A long-duration lunar outpost will rely entirely upon imported or preserved foods to sustain the crew during early Lunar missions. Fresh, perishable foods (e.g. salad crops) would be consumed by the crew soon after delivery by the re-supply missions, and can provide a supplement to the diet rich in antioxidants (bioprotectants) that would serve as a countermeasure to radiation exposure. Although controlled environment research has been carried out on the growth of salad crops under a range of environmental conditions, there has been no demonstration of sustainable production in a flight-like system under conditions that might be encountered in space. Several fundamental challenges that must be overcome in order to achieve sustained salad crop production under the power, volume and mass constraints of early Lunar outposts include; growing multiple species, sustaining productivity through multiple plantings, and minimizing time for crew operations.

Scope of the DRESS project is to research, develop and validate a distributed and redundant electrical steering system technology for an aircraft nose landing gear. The new system aims to: • reduce system weight at aircraft level, replacing the current hydraulic actuation system with an electric one. • improve aircraft safety, achieving higher system redundancy levels compared to the current technology capabilities. This paper presents an outline of different activities occurring in the DRESS project and also shows preliminary results of the new system performance.

Due to the conventional autoclaving of pre-impregnated materials causes high costs in the production of carbon fibre structures, new injection methods have become more and more relevant. The research project “CFK-Tex” focuses on the automated handling and processing of preforms out of dry carbon fibre textiles. Regarding the advantages in quality improvement and process time, an automation of all process steps is getting enforced. The major challenge, in addition to the difficult handling-properties of the materials and high quality demands, is the enormous variety of outline variants caused by small production quantities but many different textile cuts per part. In the first step the requirements of an automated system are exactly analyzed considering the specific material properties as well as process and product based characteristics.

Protection of the C-17 Airplane during Semi Prepared Runway Operations

The C-17 airplane operates in some of the most challenging environments in the world including semi prepared runway operations (SPRO). Typical semi-prepared runways are composed of a compacted soil aggregate of sand, silt, gravel, and rocks. When the airplane lands or takes off from a semi-prepared runway, debris, including sand, gravel, rocks and, mud is kicked up from the nose landing gear (NLG) and the main landing gear (MLG) tires. As the airplane accelerates to takeoff or decelerates from landing touchdown, this airborne debris impacts the underbelly and any component mounted on the underbelly. The result is the erosion of the protective surface coating and damage to systems that protrude below the fuselage into the debris path. The financial burden caused by SPRO damage is significant due to maintenance costs, spares costs and Non-Mission Capable (NMC) time.

Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation of Collaborative Air Traffic Flow Management using Brahms

The air traffic demand on the US national airspace frequently exceeds its available capacity. In current operations, the Air Traffic Service Provider designs and implements air traffic management initiatives with minimal interaction with the airlines. NASA and its partners have developed a new collaborative air traffic flow management concept of operations that involves the users of the airspace to a greater degree. In this paper, we describe an agent-based simulation of the new concept of operations and our planned experimentation to determine if the new concept of operations will lead to better utilization of the national airspace.
