The purpose of this Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is to provide guidelines for the selection and design of airborne liquid cooling systems. This publication is applicable to liquid cooling systems of the closed loop type and the expendable coolant type in which the primary function is transporting of heat from its source to a heat sink. Most liquid cooling system applications are oriented toward the cooling of electronics. Liquid cooling techniques, heat sinks, design features, selection of coolants, corrosion control, and servicing requirements for these systems are presented. Information on vapor compression refrigeration systems, which are a type of cooling system, is found in Reference 1.

The paper describes the compatibility of two contradictory factors among basic automobile design features through the development of an advanced research automobile. These factors are the interior space for passenger comfort and exterior shape for aerodynamic drag reduction. The basic design of the automobile is a fast-back front- drive car with packaging five passengers providing sufficient interior space resembling sedan. In consideration of safety regulations, the visibility and passenger comfort, body shape has been optimized by 1/5 scale model wind tunnel testing. Since engine cooling flow is one of the dominant factors among aerodynamic characteristics, resistance due to internal flow in the engine compartment are also explained. The drag coefficient of the advanced research automobile developed through aerodynamic studies was shown to be 0.25.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides guidance and interpretation on how to apply the objectives and activities in ARP4754A, “Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems”, to propulsion systems with electronic engine control. As the ARP4754A was developed and written more generally at the aircraft level, guidance will be provided to allocate ARP4754A objectives and activities to each side of the aircraft/engine interface. Using this guidance, certification applicants (aircraft and engine manufacturers) will be able to make proposals to coordinate their activities with their respective authority based on this allocation with the objective of distributing efficiently the compliance demonstration efforts between engine and aircraft certification and of avoiding unnecessary duplication of work.

The PCS Instruments Micro pitting rig (MPR) is currently used by the Industry to look at both macro and micro pitting resistance of lubricating oils on gears and bearings. Using the test methods and profile developed from testing performed by Powertrib, and then further discussions between PCS Instruments (the instrument manufacturer) and the E-34C committee, a set of proposed test conditions have been agreed. Once the specimens have been manufactured, a small round robin is planned to look at repeatability and reproducibility.
