Test Procedure for Battery Flame Retardant Venting Systems

2018-11-12
CURRENT
J1495_201811
This SAE Standard details procedures for testing lead-acid SLI (starting, lighting, and ignition), heavy-duty, EV (electric vehicle), and RV (recreational vehicle) batteries, to determine the effectiveness of the battery venting system to retard the propagation of an externally ignited flame of battery gas into the interior of the battery under sustained overcharge conditions. NOTE: At this time, 2018, there is no known comparable ISO Standard.

LIFE TEST FOR AUTOMOTIVE STORAGE BATTERIES

1982-06-01
HISTORICAL
J240_198206
This SAE Recommended Practice applies to 12 V, automotive storage batteries of 180 min or less reserve capacity. This life test simulates automotive service when the battery operates in a voltage regulated charging system. It subjects the battery to charge and discharge cycles comparable to those encountered in automotive service. Other performance and dimensional information is contained in the latest issue of SAE J537. This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice, but may be subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances.

LIFE TEST FOR AUTOMOTIVE STORAGE BATTERIES

HISTORICAL
J240_197105
This life test simulates automotive service where the battery operates in a voltage regulated charging system. This test subjects the battery to charge and discharge cycles resulting in failure modes comparable to those encountered in automotive service. 1 The battery is tested in a water bath maintained at 105 ± 5 F. 2 The test cycle is performed as follows: Discharge: 2 min at 25 A Charge: (a) maximum voltage — 14.8 (b) maximum rate — 25 A (c) time — 10 min 3 The battery is continuously cycled for 100 h (for example, Mon day noon until 4:00 p.m. Friday).

Life Test for Heavy-Duty Storage Batteries (Lead Acid Type only)

2012-02-21
HISTORICAL
J2185_201202
This SAE Standard applies to lead-acid 12 V heavy-duty storage batteries as described in SAE J537 and SAE J930 for uses in starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) applications on motor vehicles and/or off-road machines. These applications have some of the following characteristics: a High levels of power are required to start the vehicle’s internal combustion engine. The need to supply this power limits the maximum depth of discharge to a fraction of the total capacity of the battery.

LIFE TEST FOR HEAVY-DUTY STORAGE BATTERIES

1997-09-01
HISTORICAL
J2185_199709
This SAE Recommended Practice applies to 12 V storage batteries which operate in a voltage regulated charging system. It simulates heavy-duty applications by subjecting the battery to deeper discharge and charge cycles than those encountered in starting a vehicle. The deeper discharge and charge cycles in service may come from a combination of the following conditions: a Frequent occurrences of total electrical load exceeding the alternator output. b Frequent occurrences of battery system supplying the electrical loads when the engine is not operating. c Frequent occurrences of prolonged vehicle storage combined with high vehicle key-off loads. Batteries will be classified into two types for this life test. Type 1 applies to batteries with reserve capacity of 200 min or less. Type 2 applies to batteries with reserve capacity greater than 200 min. (“C” value for Type 1 equals 25.0; “C” value for Type 2 equals 50.0.)

This SAE Standard serves as a guide for testing procedures of automotive 12 V storage batteries. The information contained herein was originally developed based on traditional ICE operation but can be more broadly applicable to other vehicle architectures. Although the test procedures contained herein are written from the standpoint of a 12 V nominal battery, they can be scaled for batteries with different nominal voltages.
