This SAE Standard specifies a stationary test method for determining the masking effect caused by parts of the base machine with equipment as specified by the manufacturer on a visibility test circle around the machine from the eye position point of a seated operator. It specifies a method for evaluating the maskings that may be present and an acceptable criterion. It applies to earthmoving machines which have a specific operator's station. It does not consider evaluation of maskings which may be present with operational movement of working tools.

This SAE Standard covers the relative position and direction of motion of controls which influence the movement of the machine and the operating direction only of equipment controls. There is no intention to eliminate or restrict the use of combination controls, automatic controls, or special operating controls. Purpose This document is intended as a guide for designing uniform operator controls for graders. Graders are defined in SAE J/ISO 6165.

This SAE Standard defines the minimum normal operating space envelope for clothed seated (SAE J899 seat configuration) and standing operators (95th percentile operator, SAE J833). This document applies to off-road, self-propelled work machines used in construction, general purpose industrial, agricultural, and forestry as identified in SAE J1116. This document defines dimensions for the minimum normal operating space envelope around the operator for operator enclosures (cabs, ROPS, FOPS) on off-road machines.

The controls covered are those centrally located at the operator's normal position. General These guidelines are based on the principle that a given direction of movement of any control produces a consistent and expected effect. Where confusion may result from the motion of the control, the effect from movement of the control shall be clearly and permanently identified.

General criteria are presented as guidelines for: control device location, resistance, and actuation of hand and foot controls by the machine's operator. The criteria are based upon physical limitations as defined by human factors engineering principles. This SAE Recommended Practice applies to upright seated operators of Road Building and Maintenance, and Specialized Mining Machinery categories of off-road, self-propelled work machines as identified in SAE J1116. The criteria presented should apply to most situations. Each situation, however, must be evaluated as to its own function and its relationship to other functions to achieve the desired operation action in normal and emergency situations with high probability. The values for control displacement and resistance apply only to what is required to achieve the desired performance of the function being controlled for the 5th through the 95th percentile person as defined in ISO 3411.
