Flexible Real-Time Simulation of Truck and Trailer Configurations

Real-time simulation of truck and trailer combinations can be applied to hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems for developing and testing electronic control units (ECUs). The large number of configuration variations in vehicle and axle types requires the simulation model to be adjustable in a wide range. This paper presents a modular multibody approach for the vehicle dynamics simulation of single track configurations and truck-and-trailer combinations. The equations of motion are expressed by a new formula which is a combination of Jourdain's principle and the articulated body algorithm. With the proposed algorithm, a robust model is achieved that is numerically stable even at handling limits. Moreover, the presented approach is suitable for modular modeling and has been successfully implemented as a basis for various system definitions. As a result, only one simulation model is needed for a large variety of track and trailer types.

A Heavy Tractor Semi-Trailer Stability Control Strategy Based on Electronic Pneumatic Braking System HIL Test

Abstract Aiming to improve the handling performance of heavy tractor semi-trailer during turning or changing lanes at high speed, a hierarchical structure controller is proposed and a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test bench of the electronic pneumatic braking system is developed to validate the proposed controller. In the upper controller, a Kalman filter observer based on the heavy tractor semi-trailer dynamic model is used to estimate the yaw rates and sideslip angles of the tractor and trailer. Simultaneously, a sliding mode direct yaw moment controller is developed, which takes the estimated yaw rates and sideslip angles and the reference values calculated by the three-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model of the heavy tractor semi-trailer as the control inputs. In the lower controller, the additional yaw moments of tractor and trailer are transformed into corresponding wheel braking forces according to the current steering characteristics.

Electrifying Long-Haul Freight—Part II: Assessment of the Battery Capacity

Abstract Recently, electric heavy-duty tractor-trailers (EHDTTs) have assumed significance as they present an immediate solution to decarbonize the transportation sector. Hence, to illustrate the economic viability of electrifying the freight industry, a detailed numerical model to estimate the battery capacity for an EHDTT is proposed for a route between Washington, DC, to Knoxville, TN. This model incorporates the effects of the terrain, climate, vehicular forces, auxiliary loads, and payload in order to select the appropriate motor and optimize the battery capacity. Additionally, current and near-future battery chemistries are simulated in the model. Along with equations describing vehicular forces based on Newton’s second law of motion, the model utilizes the Hausmann and Depcik correlation to estimate the losses caused by the capacity offset of the batteries. Here, a Newton-Raphson iterative scheme determines the minimum battery capacity for the required state of charge.

Conceptualization and Modeling of a Flywheel-Based Regenerative Braking System for a Commercial Electric Bus

Abstract The following article illustrates the detailed study of the development of a unique flywheel-based regenerative braking system (f-RBS) for achieving regenerative braking in a commercial electric bus. The f-RBS is designed for installation in the front wheels of the bus. The particular data values for modeling the bus are taken from multiple legitimate sources to illustrate the development strategy of the regenerative braking system. Mechanical components used in this system have either been carefully designed and analyzed for avoiding fatigue failure or their market selection strategies explained. The positioning of the entire system is decided using MSC Adams View®, hence determining a suitable component placement strategy such that the f-RBS components do not interfere with the bus components. The entire system is modeled on MATLAB Simulink® with sufficient accuracy to get various results that would infer the performance of the system as a whole.

Stability Analysis of Combined Braking System of Tractor-Semitrailer Based on Phase-Plane Method

Abstract An analysis method for the stability of combined braking system of tractor-semitrailer based on phase-plane is investigated. Based on a 9 degree of freedom model, considering longitudinal load transfer, nonlinear model of tire and other factors, the braking stability of tractor-semitrailer is analyzed graphically on the phase plane. The stability of both tractor and semitrailer with different retarder gear is validated with the energy plane, β plane, yaw angle plane and hinged angle plane. The result indicates that in the long downhill with curve condition, both tractor and semitrailer show good stability when retarder is working at 1st and 2nd gear, and when it is at 3rd gear, the tractor is close to be unstable while semitrailer is unstable already. Besides, tractor and semitrailer both lose stability when retarder is working at the 4th gear.

Speed Planning and Prompting System for Commercial Vehicle Based on Real-Time Calculation of Resistance

Abstract When commercial vehicles drive in a mountainous area, the complex road condition and long slopes cause frequent acceleration and braking, which will use 25% more fuel. And the brake temperature rises rapidly due to continuous braking on the long-distance downslopes, which will make the brake drum fail with the brake temperature exceeding 308°C [1]. Meanwhile, the kinetic energy is wasted during the driving progress on the slopes when the vehicle rolls up and down. Our laboratory built a model that could calculate the distance from the top of the slope, where the driver could release the accelerator pedal. Thus, on the slope, the vehicle uses less fuel when it rolls up and less brakes when down. What we do in this article is use this model in a real vehicle and measure how well it works.

This SAE Standard covers the minimum requirements for nonmetallic tubing as manufactured for use in air brake systems which tubing is different from that described in SAE J844. It is not intended to cover tubing for any portion of the system which operates continuously below - 40 degrees C or above +93 degrees C, above a maximum working gage pressure of 1.0 MPa, or in an area subject to attack by battery acid. This tubing is intended for use in the brake system for connections, which maintain a basically fixed relationship between components during vehicle operation. Coiled tube assemblies required for those installations where flexing occurs are covered by this document, SAE J1131 and SAE J2494-3, to the extent of setting minimum requirements on the essentially straight tube and tube fitting connections which are used in the construction of such assemblies.

A Primer on Building a Hardware in the Loop Simulation and Validation for a 6X4 Tractor Trailer Model

This research was to model a 6×4 tractor-trailer rig using TruckSim and simulate severe braking maneuvers with hardware in the loop and software in the loop simulations. For the hardware in the loop simulation (HIL), the tractor model was integrated with a 4s4m anti-lock braking system (ABS) and straight line braking tests were conducted. In developing the model, over 100 vehicle parameters were acquired from a real production tractor and entered into TruckSim. For the HIL simulation, the hardware consisted of a 4s4m ABS braking system with six brake chambers, four modulators, a treadle and an electronic control unit (ECU). A dSPACE simulator was used as the “interface” between the TruckSim computer model and the hardware.

Modeling, Experimentation and Sensitivity Analysis of a Pneumatic Brake System in Commercial Vehicles

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the optimal design of pipeline diameter in an air brake system in order to reduce the response time for driving safety using DOE (Design of Experiment) method. To achieve this purpose, this paper presents the development and validation of a computer-aided analytical dynamic model of a pneumatic brake system in commercial vehicles. The brake system includes the subsystems for brake pedal, treadle valve, quick release valve, load sensing proportional valve and brake chamber, and the simulation models for individual components of the brake system are established within the multi-domain physical modeling software- AMESim based on the logic structure. An experimental test bench was set up by connecting each component with the nylon pipelines based on the actual layout of the 4×2 commercial vehicle air brake system.

At present, the active safety and stability of heavy vehicles have becoming big concern among the road transportation industry. The purpose of this paper is to specify the research stability and safety of heavy vehicles those set up the accurate and reliable dynamic vehicle reference model and search the method to improve the stability and safety of tractor and semitrailer. A Multi-objective control algorithm was studied to differential braking based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control method. Simulation results show that the multi-objective control algorithm can effectively improve the vehicle driving stability and safety.

A Pneumatic Hybrid System with an Integrated Compressor/Expander Unit for Commercial Vehicles

Braking energy recovery can significantly contribute to fuel economy and emission reduction, particularly for commercial vehicles driving in urban environment. By using the compressed air storage, rather than expensive and vulnerable batteries, this paper proposes a pneumatic hybrid system with an integrated compressor/expander unit (CEU) for commercial vehicles, in order to achieve stop/start function and braking energy recovery. During braking, the compressed air is recovered by CEU working in compressor mode and is charged to the air tanks. When the vehicle starts from stop, the CEU works as an expander to crank the engine with compressed air. The compressed air can also be used to supply the air tank of brake boost system, thus reducing its energy consumption. The mathematical models of energy conversion units, including the two modes of CEU and the air brake system, are established and analyzed.

The active safety and stability of tractor and trailer (heavy-duty vehicle) have becoming big concern among the road transportation industry. The purpose of this paper is to specify the research differential braking force distribution control algorithm to improve braking safety of heavy-duty vehicle. The ideal braking force of each wheel axle should be proportional to vertical load of vehicle that is also related to the road adhesion coefficient, the load and the braking intensity. Reasonable braking force distribution can enhance its braking stability and shorten the braking distance by making full use of the road adhesion condition of each wheel. A braking force distribution algorithm is proposed, in which the objective braking force change with the axle load of vehicle.

The 2014 SAE Buckendale Lecture will address the past developments and challenges of electromechanical “smart” systems for improving commercial vehicles' functionality. Electromechanical systems combine traditional mechanical devices with electrical components to provide far higher degree of functionality and adaptability for improved vehicle performance. The significant advances in microprocessors and their widespread use in consumer products have promoted their implementation in various classes of vehicles, resulting in “smart” devices that can sense their operating environment and command an appropriate action for improved handling, stability, and comfort. The chassis and suspension application of electromechanical devices mostly relate to controllable suspensions and vehicle dynamic management systems, such as Electronic Stability Control.

Monitoring Brake Wear with Acoustics

A new approach for detecting problems with vehicle brakes by analyzing sounds emitted during braking events is proposed. Vehicle brakes emit acoustic energy as part of the braking process; the spectra of these sounds are highly dependent on the mechanical condition of the brake and can be used to detect problems. Acoustic theory indicates that as brake linings wear thinner the resonant frequency of the shoe or pad increases, potentially enabling the monitoring of lining wear through passive acoustic sensors. To test this approach, passive acoustic sensors were placed roadside at the exit of a transit bus facility for 9 months. The sensors collected almost 10,000 recordings of a fleet of 160 vehicles braking over a variety of conditions. Spectra of vehicles that had brake work performed during this period were analyzed to compare differences between new and worn friction linings.

Motor graders are used in many applications in the mining and construction field. Graders running in On-Road have to meet the RTO regulations. DGMS derives the norms and regulations applicable for equipments including motor graders operated in mines. BG825 model grader mounted with 16ft work blade is equipped with air actuated system for slow down and braking. The Study has been made to improve the confidence and reliability among the operator by increasing the no of brake actuation’s before the warning signal and also introduces the hand operated emergency brake to tackle unfavorable circumstance. The Modified air system has been implemented and tested as per the standard in the mines at customer site. The practical field test reveals that the increase in no of actuation’s and emergency brake introduction brings more operators confident and ensures safety at the higher order.

Being a safety critical aggregate, every aspect of brake system is considered significant in vehicles operations. Along with optimum performance of brake system in terms of deceleration generation, brake pedal feel or brake feel is considered as one of the key elements while evaluating brake system of vehicles. There are many factors such as liner and drum condition, road surface, friction between linkages which impress the pedal feel. Out of these, in this paper we will be discussing the factors which influence the brake pedal feel in relation to the driver comfort and confidence building. Under optimum braking condition, brake operation must be completed with pedal effort not very less or not very high, brake pedal feel must be firm throughout the operation, in such a way that it will not create fatigue and at the same time it will give enough confidence to the driver while operating with acceptable travel.

Influence of Asymmetrical Design Parameter on Vehicle Pull During Brake Application

The steering system of commercial vehicle is asymmetrical to left side and rightside, this causes vehicle pull during braking application. This directly affects the safety of the driver and vehicle ride & handling performance. In a similar way, the asymmetrical suspension parameter unintentionally set during vehicle assembly arealso major contributors for creating a vehicle pull. After application of brake force, the tire contact patch creates a moment about the kingpin axis. However, this moment generated is different on left and right-side due to asymmetrical design parameters resulting in vehicle deviation from its intended path. A large deviation may lead to on road accidents. Some of the major factors which are responsible for the vehicle pulling phenomenon are the asymmetrical steering system compliance, asymmetrical suspension geometry, tire, braking system, road camber etc.

Investigation on Leakage Issue in Air Brake Valve Using Finite Element Method and Experimental Analysis

Braking system components generally are safety critical products. Commercial vehicles braking systems are of highly safety critical as they pose a serious threat to life and property. Therefore, a system must be designed and validated to minimize the effects of component failure of these portfolios of products. In order to avoid accidents due to brake failures, this paper mainly focuses on analysis of loss of pneumatic fluid pressure in the components of the braking systems. Leakage of pneumatic fluid pressure through the sealing in braking system is one of the major reasons for the failure of the brakes in the vehicles. The aim of the present study is to simulate the lab failure and improve the design using finite element analysis. Also, the optimized design is validated by experimentally. A finite element model is developed in Ansys Workbench to study the behavior of the sealing ring under assembly conditions.

Study of Heat Generation in Brake Pad with and without Slots using Numerical and Experimental Analysis

In recent days, the usage of disc brake is increased acutely in commercial vehicle applications apart from the passenger vehicles. The main advantage of using disc brake is reducing the stopping distance, temperature and wear between the disc and pad. During the braking, kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into thermal energy due to the friction between disc and pad. To maintain the temperature between the disc and pad is critical for the overall performance of the disc brake and safety of the vehicle. The process of vehicle braking is a dynamically thermal structure coupling problem which is complex in nature. In this study, temperature between the disc and pad is determined using Finite Element Analysis for two different pad configurations. As per recent vehicle norms by the government the axle load is increased by 20 % which requires increased braking force and will leads to high temperature in the disc pad interface.
