This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the duration of idling on engine warm-up and engine cool-down, and to assess the effectiveness of an energy recovery system. The results confirmed that there is no need to idle an engine for extended periods after a cold start to warm it up. It is more efficient to idle the engine for a short period, and then drive the vehicle or operate the machinery at moderate loads until the engine warms up to normal operating temperatures. The tests also confirmed that the engine retains enough heat for easy starting even after being shut down for a few hours and there is no need to idle an engine for fear of having cold start problems. The tests with an energy recovery system, which circulates engine coolant to the heater after the engine is shut down, showed that the system can maintain cab temperatures at comfortable levels even after the engine has been shut down for a few hours.

The need of upfront modeling, simulation and design optimization has been ever increasing during full vehicle product development process. The overall vehicle system and component subsystem performances remain critical considerations for making final product release decision. With these challenges in mind, the work of this paper discusses the development of feasible CAE methods, tools, and processes for multi-objective design optimization. A full integrated tractor trailer truck vehicle is used as an example to demonstrate this capability. The proposed approach allows several design objectives to be simultaneously optimized, which might otherwise be extremely difficult to achieve with experimental methods.

In response to the increasing scarcity of oil reserves and the negative impact carbon emissions have on the environment, clean technologies and renewable energy must take priority in research. Project Ciclar combines clean technology with sustainability to create an environmentally friendly vehicle for selective waste collection. Unlike conventional waste collection vehicles in Brazil, the Electric-powered Lightweight vehicle for selective waste Collection (ELC) is powered entirely by electrical and solar energy, thereby ensuring zero emissions. Even though ELC is electric, a major concern of the project was to produce a vehicle that would be as energy efficient as possible. By employing an electric motor, ELC reduces the per kilometer cost of operation by approximately 50% in comparison to petroleum-based fueled engines.

Abstract The objective of this project was to provide pertinent information on the performance of refrigeration and heating transportation units to help fleets make decisions that will improve efficiency and increase productivity. To achieve this objective, tests were designed to measure the performance of selected refrigeration and heating units, mounted on refrigerated and heated van semitrailers. Cooling and freezing tests were carried out in summer conditions while heating tests were carried out in winter conditions, for various temperature settings. Two fundamental approaches were considered: the design of the refrigerated or heated trailer and the temperature setting of the refrigeration or heating unit. For cooling and freezing tests, the fuel consumption comparison between similar trailer models of different ages showed that newer units performed better than older ones.

Abstract In order to introduce Dana's Variglide Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) technology to the mobility industry, Dana has produced demonstrator transmissions for use in a rear wheel drive C-class car and in a fork lift truck. The intention is to illustrate how the CVP can be combined with conventional transmission technology to produce either a continuously variable transmission with the ratio range comparable to that of the latest step ratio transmissions, or used in a simple IVT configuration for off-highway applications. The co-axial design of the CVP allows it to package well into current drivetrain solutions. The ratio control of the device is fast, precise, and stable and the CVP does not require high power consumption for clamping. Multiple power flow configurations of the CVP are shown to blend well with current conventional transmission technology as well as future hybrid configurations.
