An Integrated Process of CFD Analysis and Design Optimization with Underhood Thermal Application

2001-03-05
2001-01-0637
With the revolutionary advances in computing power and software technology, the future trend of integrating design and CFD analysis software package to realize an automated design optimization has been explored in this study. The integrated process of UG, ICEMCFD, and FLUENT was accomplished using iSIGHT for vehicle Aero/Thermal applications. Process integration, CFD solution strategy, optimization algorithm and the practicality for real world problem of this process have been studied, and will be discussed in this paper. As an example of this application, the results of an underhood thermal design will be presented. The advantage of systematical and rapid design exploration is demonstrated by using this integrated process. It also shows the great potential of computer based design automation in vehicle Aero/Thermal development.

An Integrated System for Durability and Reliability Synthesis Using iSIGHT and FE-Fatigue

2003-03-03
2003-01-1220
This paper describes a system developed to automate fatigue sensitivity and reliability analysis using design exploration software iSIGHT to drive FEA-based fatigue analysis software FE-Fatigue. By integrating codes into iSIGHT, repetitive tasks can be automated. However, for each application, the user must integrate his problem, define parameters and variations, choose synthesis methods, and post process results. By developing a special graphical user interface (GUI) for FE-Fatigue used within iSIGHT, the user does not have to manually integrate the process, improving productivity. More importantly, it allows engineers to focus on design, rather than repeated manual tasks.

Physical Drawbead Design and Modeling with ABAQUS/Isight

2017-03-28
2017-01-0305
This paper focus on the design approach of mapping the equivalent bead to the physical bead geometry. In principle, the physical character and geometry of equivalent bead is represented as restraining force (N/mm) and a line (bead center line). During draw development, the iterations are performed to conclude the combination of restraining force that obtains the desired strain state of a given panel. The objective of physical bead design to determine a bead geometry that has the capacity to generate the same force as specified in 2D plane strain condition. The software package ABAQUS/CAE/Isight with python script is utilized as primary tool in this study. In the approach, the bead geometry is sketched and parameterized in ABAQUS/CAE and optimized with Isight to finalize the bead geometry.

Multi Objective Robust Optimization for Idle Performance

2006-04-03
2006-01-0757
This paper presents a pioneer work and first time application of Multi Objective Robust Optimization to analytically improve Idle Shake Performance. The method is developed to obtain a robust design with multiple objectives under consideration along with managing material property variation. It was a Robust Optimization on top of Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm, Robu-MOGA. The design variables in the study included the nominal values and tolerances of Sound Transmission Loss property, and interior material Absorption property. The analytical objective was not only to minimize the peak airborne noise at each specified frequency, but also to reduce the total cost and the total mass of the materials. In the study, AutoSEA (statistical energy analysis) from ESI Software, Inc. was used as the solver. AutoSEA was integrated with iSIGHT from Engineous Software, Inc.

Park Pawl Dynamic System Engagement Speed Calculation Using Isight

2015-04-14
2015-01-1363
For a CAE model of the park pawl dynamic system, the engagement speed calculation is done by controlling the input rotational velocity of the vehicle. Usually, it requires multiple adjustment of the input rotational velocity to get the engagement speed and that demands time, effort and file management skill of an analyst. The current objective of this paper is to demonstrate how software Isight, working with ABAQUS Explicit as the solver, can be used to automate the engagement speed calculation procedure and thus reduce the time and effort required of a CAE analyst. The automated system is developed in a way such that the accuracy of the results can be controlled by the end user. It is observed that the automated system significantly saves an analyst's effort. The system design can be optimized easily for modifiable design features such as the torsional spring and the actuator spring stiffness values using the proposed procedure.
