A Kinematic Modeling Framework for Prediction of Instantaneous Status of Towing Vehicle Systems

Abstract A kinematic modeling framework was established to predict status (position, displacement, velocity, acceleration, and shape) of a towing vehicle system with different driver inputs. This framework consists of three components: (1) a state space model to decide position and velocity for the vehicle system based on Newton’s second law; (2) an angular acceleration transferring model, which leads to a hypothesis that the each towed unit follows the same path as the towing vehicle; and (3) a polygon model to draw instantaneous polygons to envelop the entire system at any time point.

Comparison Study of Malaysian Driver Seating Position in SAEJ1517 Accommodation Model

Abstract A key element in an ergonomically designed driver’s seat in a car is the correct identification of driver seating position and posture accommodation. Current practice by the automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is to utilize the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) J1517 standard practice as a reference. However, it was found that utilizing such guidelines, which were developed based on the American population, did not fit well with the anthropometry and stature of the Malaysian population. This research seeks to address this issue by comparing the SAE J1517 Model against Malaysian preferred driving position. A total of 62 respondents were involved for the driver seating position and accommodation study in the vehicle driver’s seat buck mockup survey and measurements. The results have shown that the Malaysian drivers prefer to sit forward as compared to the SAE J1517 Model and have shorter posture joint angle.

Optimizing Seat Belt and Airbag Designs for Rear Seat Occupant Protection in Frontal Crashes

Recent field data have shown that the occupant protection in vehicle rear seats failed to keep pace with advances in the front seats likely due to the lack of advanced safety technologies. The objective of this study was to optimize advanced restraint systems for protecting rear seat occupants with a range of body sizes under different frontal crash pulses. Three series of sled tests (baseline tests, advanced restraint trial tests, and final tests), MADYMO model validations against a subset of the sled tests, and design optimizations using the validated models were conducted to investigate rear seat occupant protection with 4 Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) and 2 crash pulses.

Postural Comfort Inside a Car: Development of an Innovative Model to Evaluate the Discomfort Level

How can car designers evaluate device’s position inside a car today? Today only subjective tests or “reachability” tests are made to assess if a generic user is able to reach devices, but it’s no longer enough. The aim of this study is to identify an instrument (index) that is able to provide a numerical information about the discomfort level connected with a posture that is kept inside a car to reach a device, by this instrument it should be possible not only judge a posture, but also compare different solutions and get rapid and accurate evaluations. In the state of the art there are many indexes developed to evaluate postural comfort (like RULA, REBA and LUBA [3, 4, 5]) but none of them has been realized to evaluate postures’ conditions that can be detected inside a car, so their evaluations cannot be acceptable.

Validation Study of a Generalized Minor Rear Vehicle Crash MADYMO Model Utilizing Real World Data

A generalized MADYMO minor rear crash vehicle model with BioRIDII ATD was developed and validated using the mean response of previously published 12 km/h delta-V rear crash tests. BioRIDII simulation pelvis, thorax and head x-axis accelerations, as well as head y-axis angular acceleration, fell within corridors defining +/- one standard deviation of the mean BioRIDII crash test responses. Peak sagittal plane BioRIDII upper neck forces and moments in the simulation were on par with the mean values observed from the crash tests. After the model was validated for 12 km/h delta-V, the model was further exercised by performing simulations with (1) a Hybrid III 50th percentile occupant and (2) by reducing the pulse by 40% of its original value. Results indicate that this generalized minor rear crash model could be useful in accurately estimating occupant kinematics and kinetics in minor crashes up to at least 12 km/h delta-V as an alternative to expensive and time consuming crash testing.

Estimation of Mass and Inertia Properties of Human Body Segments for Physics-based Human Modeling and Simulation Applications

This paper describes an effective integrated method for estimation of subject-specific mass, inertia tensor, and center of mass of individual body segments of a digital avatar for use with physics-based digital human modeling simulation environment. One of the main goals of digital human modeling and simulation environments is that a user should be able to change the avatar (from male to female to a child) at any given time. The user should also be able to change the various link dimensions, like lengths of upper and lower arms, lengths of upper and lower legs, etc. These customizations in digital avatar's geometry change the kinematic and dynamic properties of various segments of its body. Hence, the mass and center of mass/inertia data of the segments must be updated before simulating physics-based realistic motions. Most of the current methods use mass and inertia properties calculated from a set of regression equations based on average of some population.

Dynamic Analysis of Car Ingress/Egress Movement: an Experimental Protocol and Preliminary Results

This paper focuses on full body dynamical analysis of car ingress/egress motion. It aims at proposing an experimental protocol adapted for analysing joint loads using inverse dynamics. Two preliminary studies were first performed in order to 1/ define the main driver/car interactions so as to allow measuring the contact forces at all possible contact zones and 2/ identify the design parameters that mainly influence the discomfort. In order to verify the feasibility of the protocol, a laboratory study was carried out, during which two subjects tested two car configurations. The experimental equipment was composed of a variable car mock-up, an optoelectronic motion tracking system, two 6D-force plates installed on the ground next to the doorframe and on the car floor, a 6D-Force sensor between the steering wheel and the steering column, and two pressure maps on the seat. Motions were reconstructed from measured surface markers trajectories using inverse kinematics.

Systematic Brake Development Process and Optimized Robust Design of Front Axle Kinematics in Order to Reduce Oscillation Sensitivity

Brake judder is about oscillations excited by brake application, which are generated in the contact area between brake pad and brake disc and are transmitted by the elements of the suspension to body and steering system. The driver perceives these perturbations as brake pedal pulsations, steering wheel rotational and body vibrations. The evaluation of a suspension concerning brake judder often takes place for the first time in road tests, since established simulation processes with a high significance concerning ride comfort are missing. At such a late moment necessary modifications in the development process are only hardly possible and very expensive. For avoiding brake judder a systematic development process is needed for brake and suspension. Each one can separately be improved in measurably borders so that their assembly is free of cold brake judder. The present paper shows appropriate test and simulation methods to achieve this.

Characterization of the Tau Parallel Kinematic Machine for Aerospace Application

A consortium of interested parties has conducted an experimental characterization of two Tau parallel kinematic machines which were built as a part of the EU-funded project, SMErobot1. Characteristics such as machine stiffness, work envelope, repeatability and accuracy were considered. This paper will present a brief history of the Tau parallel machine, the results of this testing and some comment on prospective application to the aerospace industry.

Improving Cabin Thermal Comfort by Controlling Equivalent Temperature

An aircraft environmental control system (ECS) is commonly designed for a cabin that has been divided into several thermal control zones; each zone has an air flow network that pulls cabin air over an isolated thermocouple. This single point measurement is used by the ECS to control the air temperature and hence the thermal environment for each zone. The thermal environment of a confined space subjected to asymmetric thermal loads can be more fully characterized, and subsequently better controlled, by determining its “equivalent temperature.” This paper describes methodology for measuring and controlling cabin equivalent temperature. The merits of controlling a cabin thermal zone based on its equivalent temperature are demonstrated by comparing thermal comfort, as predicted by a “virtual thermal manikin,” for both air-temperature and equivalent-temperature control strategies.

Loading Path Dependence of Forming Limit Diagram of a TRIP800 Steel

In this paper, the microstructure-based finite element modeling method is used in investigating the loading path dependence of formability of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. For this purpose, the effects of different loading path on the forming limit diagrams (FLD) of TRIP steels are qualitatively examined using the representative volume element (RVE) of a commercial TRIP800 steel. First, the modeling method was introduced, where a combined isotropic/kinematic hardening rule is adopted for the constituent phases in order to correctly describe the cyclic deformation behaviors of TRIP steels during the forming process with combined loading paths which may include the unloading between the two consecutive loadings. Material parameters for the constituent phases remained the same as those in the authors' previous study [ 1 ] except for some adjustments for the martensite phase due to the introduction of the new combined hardening rule.

Development of Advanced EuroSID-2 and EuroSID-2re Radioss Dummies

EuroSID-2 and EuroSID-2re are among the most frequently used side impact dummies in vehicle crash safety. Radioss is one of most widely applied finite element codes for crash safety analysis. To meet the needs of crash safety analysis and to exploit the potential of the Radioss code, a new generation of EuroSID-2 (ES2) and EuroSID-2re (ES2_RE) Radioss dummies was developed at First Technology Safety System (FTSS) in collaboration with Altair. This paper describes in detail the development of the ES2/ES2_RE dummies. Firstly whole dummy meshes were created based on CAD data and intensive efforts were made to obtain penetration/intersection-free models. Secondly FTSS finite element certificate tests at component level were conducted to obtain satisfactory component performances. These tests include the head drop test, the neck pendulum test, the lumbar pendulum test and the thorax drop test [ 1 , 2 ].

Validation of Sled Tests for Far-Side Occupant Kinematics Using MADYMO

Far-side occupants are not addressed in current government regulations around the world even though they account for up to 40% of occupant HARM in side impact crashes. Consequently, there are very few crash tests with far-side dummies available to researchers. Sled tests are frequently used to replicate the dynamic conditions of a full-scale crash test in a controlled setting. However, in far-side crashes the complexity of the occupant kinematics is increased by the longer duration of the motion and by the increased rotation of the vehicle. The successful duplication of occupant motion in these crashes confirms that a sled test is an effective, cost-efficient means of testing and developing far-side occupant restraints or injury countermeasures.

Dynamic Response of Vehicle Roof Structure and ATD Neck Loading During Dolly Rollover Tests

The debate surrounding roof deformation and occupant injury potential has existed in the automotive community for over 30 years. In analysis of real-world rollovers, assessment of roof deformation and occupant compartment space starts with the post-accident roof position. Dynamic movement of the roof structure during a rollover sequence is generally acknowledged but quantification of the dynamic roof displacement has been limited. Previous assessment of dynamic roof deformation has been generally limited to review of the video footage from staged rollover events. Rollover testing for the evaluation of injury potential has typically been studied utilizing instrumented test dummies, on-board and off-board cameras, and measurements of residual crush. This study introduces an analysis of previously undocumented real-time data to be considered in the evaluation of the roof structure's dynamic behavior during a rollover event.

Subsystem Rollover Tests for the Evaluation of ATD Kinematics and Restraints

The development of a repeatable dynamic rollover test methodology with meaningful occupant protection performance objectives has been a longstanding and unmet challenge. Numerous studies have identified the random and chaotic nature of rollover crashes, and the difficulty associated with simulating these events in a laboratory setting. Previous work addressed vehicle level testing attempting to simulate an entire rollover event but it was determined that this test methodology could not be used for development of occupant protection restraint performance objectives due to the unpredictable behavior of the vehicle during the entire rollover event. More recent efforts have focused on subsystem tests that simulate distinct phases of a rollover event, up to and including the first roof-to-ground impact.

Expanding the Use of Robotics in Airframe Assembly Via Accurate Robot Technology

Serial link articulated robots applied in aerospace assembly have largely been limited in scope by deficiencies in positional accuracy. The majority of aerospace applications require tolerances of +/−0.25mm or less which have historically been far beyond reach of the conventional off-the-shelf robot. The recent development of the accurate robot technology represents a paradigm shift for the use of articulated robotics in airframe assembly. With the addition of secondary feedback, high-order kinematic model, and a fully integrated conventional CNC control, robotic technology can now compete on a performance level with customized high precision motion platforms. As a result, the articulated arm can be applied to a much broader range of assembly applications that were once limited to custom machines, including one-up assembly, two-sided drilling and fastening, material removal, and automated fiber placement.

Applied Accurate Robotic Drilling for Aircraft Fuselage

Once limited by insufficient accuracy, the off-the-shelf industrial robot has been enhanced via the integration of secondary encoders at the output of each of its axes. This in turn with a solid mechanical platform and enhanced kinematic model enable on-part accuracies of less than +/−0.25mm. Continued development of this enabling technology has been demonstrated on representative surfaces of an aircraft fuselage. Positional accuracy and process capability was validated in multiple orientations both in upper surface (spindle down) and lower surface (spindle up) configurations. A second opposing accurate robotic drilling system and full-scale fuselage mockup were integrated to simulate doubled throughput and to demonstrate the feasibility of maintaining high on-part accuracy with a dual spindle cell.

Production Implementation of Multiple Machine, High Speed Fiber Placement for Large Structures

A two machine Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) cell capable of laying 1/2\mi and 1/4\mi tow at rates up to 1800\mi/min (45.7 m/min), including feeds and cuts, has been implemented for the manufacture of large primary aircraft structures. The control architecture of the cell is such that part programs are machine independent and can run on either machine or simultaneously on both machines at the same time. A Central Cell Controller pushes part programs to each AFP machine and coordinates the cell. Volumetric accuracy of the two machines is under 0.008\mi (0.2 mm) radial error in the entire compensated envelop, which is approximately 64' x 21' x 14' (19.5 m x 6.4 m x 4.3 m) for each machine. This is accomplished through optimization of volumetric kinematic compensation parameters using a linear numerical solver. The machines reference a common coordinate system which allows great flexibility in part programming.

Detailed Analysis of Variables Affecting Wing Kinematics of Bat Flight

Body motions of flying animals can be very complex, especially when the body parts are greatly flexible and they interact with the surrounding fluid. The wing kinematics of an animal flight is governed by a large number of variables and thus the measurement of complete flapping flight is not so simple, making it very complex to understand the contribution of each parameter to the performance and hence, to decide the important parameters for constructing the kinematic model of a bat is nearly impossible. In this paper, the influence of each parameter is uncovered and the variables that a specified reconstruction of bat flight should include in order to maximally reconstruct actual dimensional complexity, have been presented in detail. The effects of the different kinematic parameters on the lift coefficient are being resulted.

Development of Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation System for Steering Evaluation Using Multibody Kinematic Analysis

The adoption of the electronic controlled steering systems with new technologies has been extended in recent years. They have interactions with other complex vehicle subsystems and it is a hard task for the vehicle developer to find the best solution from huge number of the combination of parameter settings with track tests. In order to improve the efficiency of the steering system development, the authors had developed a steering bench test method for steering system using a Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS). In the steering HILS system, vehicle dynamics simulation and the tie rod axial force calculation are required at the same time in the real-time simulation environment. The accuracy of the tie rod axial force calculation is one of the key factors to reproduce the vehicle driving condition. But the calculation cannot be realized by a commercial software for the vehicle dynamics simulation.
