A Comparative Study of Two RVE Modelling Methods for Chopped Carbon Fiber SMC

To advance vehicle lightweighting, chopped carbon fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) is identified as a promising material to replace metals. However, there are no effective tools and methods to predict the mechanical property of the chopped carbon fiber SMC due to the high complexity in microstructure features and the anisotropic properties. In this paper, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) approach is used to model the SMC microstructure. Two modeling methods, the Voronoi diagram-based method and the chip packing method, are developed to populate the RVE. The elastic moduli of the RVE are calculated and the two methods are compared with experimental tensile test conduct using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Furthermore, the advantages and shortcomings of these two methods are discussed in terms of the required input information and the convenience of use in the integrated processing-microstructure-property analysis.

A Game Theory-Based Model Predictive Controller Considering Intension for Mandatory Lane Change

In recent years, with the increase of traffic accidents and traffic jams, lane change, as one of the most important and commonly automatic driving operations for autonomous vehicles, is receiving attention in academia. It is considered to be one of the important solutions that play an important role in improving road traffic safety and efficiency. However, most existing lane-changing models are rule-based lane-changing models. These models only assume a one-direction impact of surrounding vehicles on the lane-changing vehicle. In fact, lane change is a process of mutual interaction between vehicles due to the complexity and uncertainty of the traffic environment. Moreover, the safety and efficiency of existing lane-changing decision algorithms need to be improved. In this paper, we proposed a multivehicle cooperative control approach with a distributed control structure to control the model.

A Kinetic Modeling and Engine Simulation Study on Ozone-Enhanced Ammonia Oxidation

Ammonia has attracted the attention of a growing number of researchers in recent years. However, some properties of ammonia (e.g., low laminar burning velocity, high ignition energy, etc.) inhibit its direct application in engines. Several routes have been proposed to overcome these problems, such as oxygen enrichment, partial fuel cracking strategy and co-combustion with more reactive fuels. Improving the reactivity of ammonia from the oxidizer side is also practical. Ozone is a highly reactive oxidizer which can be easily and rapidly generated through electrical plasma and is an effective promoter applicable for a variety of fuels. The dissociation reaction of ozone increases the concentration of reactive radicals and promotes chain-propagating reactions. Thus, obtaining accurate rate constants of reactions related to ozone is necessary, especially at elevated to high pressure range which is closer to engine-relevant conditions.

A Mapless Trajectory Prediction Model with Enhanced Temporal Modeling

The prediction of agents' future trajectory is a crucial task in supporting advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and plays a vital role in ensuring safe decisions for autonomous driving (AD). Currently, prevailing trajectory prediction methods heavily rely on high-definition maps (HD maps) as a source of prior knowledge. While HD maps enhance the accuracy of trajectory prediction by providing information about the surrounding environment, their widespread use is limited due to their high cost and legal restrictions. Furthermore, due to object occlusion, limited field of view, and other factors, the historical trajectory of the target agent is often incomplete This limitation significantly reduces the accuracy of trajectory prediction. Therefore, this paper proposes ETSA-Pred, a mapless trajectory prediction model that incorporates enhanced temporal modeling and spatial self-attention.

A Multimodal States Based Vehicle Descriptor and Dilated Convolutional Social Pooling for Vehicle Trajectory Prediction

Precise trajectory prediction of surrounding vehicles is critical for decision-making of autonomous vehicles, and learning-based approaches are well recognized for the robustness. However, state-of-the-art learning-based methods ignore (1) the feasibility of the vehicle’s multimodal state information for prediction and (2) the mutually exclusive relationship between the global traffic scene receptive fields and the local position resolution when modeling vehicles’ interactions, which may influence prediction accuracy. Therefore, we propose a “vehicle descriptor”-based long short-term memory (LSTM) model with the dilated convolutional social pooling (VD+DCS-LSTM) to cope with the above issues.

A Novel Approach to Constructing Reactivity-Based Simplified Combustion Model for Dual Fuel Engine

To achieve higher efficiencies and lower emissions, dual-fuel strategies have arisen as advanced engine technologies. In order to fully utilize engine fuels, understanding the combustion chemistry is urgently required. However, due to computation limitations, detailed kinetic models cannot be used in numerical engine simulations. As an alternative, approaches for developing reduced reaction mechanisms have been proposed. Nevertheless, existing simplified methods neglecting the real engine combustion processes, which is the ultimate goal of reduced mechanism. In this study, we propose a novel simplified approach based on fuel reactivity. The high-reactivity fuel undergoes pyrolysis first, followed by the pyrolysis and oxidation of the low-reactivity fuel. Therefore, the simplified mechanism consists of highly lumped reactions of high-reactivity fuel, radical reactions of low-reactivity fuel and C0-C2 core mechanisms.

A Novel Method Studying the Effects of Journal Straightness in Three-Dimensional Space on Lubrication of Bearing

Conventionally, the engines are calibrated under the assumption that engines will be made exactly to the prints, and all the engines from the same batch will be identical. However, engine-to-engine variations do exist which will affect the engine performances, and part-to-part variations, i.e., the tolerance, is an important factor leading to engine-to-engine variations. There are researches conducted on the influence of dimensional tolerances on engine performance, however, the impact of straightness, which is an important geometric tolerance, on lubrication is an unsolved issue. This study presents a systematic method to model the straightness and to analyze its effects on the friction loss. The bearing model is built based on elastohydrodynamic (EHD) theory. Meanwhile a novel modeling method to represent any form of straightness in three-dimensional space is proposed.

A SOM-Based Trajectory Planning Analysis Method for Intelligent Groups System

Aiming at the problem of weak communication, strong interference, cross-domain, and large-scale environment, it is difficult to achieve efficient decision-making and planning in the collaborative operation of intelligent groups. Based on the SOM algorithm, this paper proposes a dual-selection allocation and distributed vectorized trajectory planning. Form a collaborative planning algorithm that can be updated with high frequency and a rational decision-making mechanism. Provide technical support for collaborative search and detection of intelligent groups. At the same time, based on the principle of minimum consistency, this paper proposes a clock synchronization model under spatial coordination and conducts simulation experiments to verify it. The result proves the efficiency and practicability of the collaborative intelligent decision-making plan proposed in this paper.

Analysis of Thermal Efficiency Improvement of a Highly Boosted, High Compression Ratio, Direct-Injection Gasoline Engine with LIVC and EIVC at Partial and Full Loads

The improvement mechanism of fuel consumption at partial and full loads of a boosted direction-injection gasoline engine with the elevated geometrical compression ratio and Miller cycle by either early or late intake valve closing (EIVC or LIVC) are analyzed based on the first law of thermodynamics and one dimensional engine simulation. An increase in geometric compression ratio increases the theoretical thermal efficiency for all the operating loads, but deteriorates the fuel economy at full loads, owing primarily to the full-load knock limit. Use of Miller cycle improves the fuel economy for both the partial and full load operations by reducing the pumping loss and optimizing the combustion phasing, respectively. A comparison between EIVC and LIVC on the influencing factors on the thermal efficiency at the partial load shows that EIVC leads to higher mechanical efficiency and less heat transfer loss than LIVC, and hence its efficiency improvement is superior over LIVC.

Analysis of the Cycle-to-Cycle Variations of In-Cylinder Vortex Structure and Vorticity using Phase-Invariant Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

The proper formation of fuel-air mixture, which depends to a large extend on the complex in-cylinder air flow, is an important criterion to control the clean and reliable combustion process in spark-ignition direct-injection (SIDI) engines. The in-cylinder flow vorticity field presents highly transient complex characteristics, and the corresponding vorticity field also evolves in the entire engine cycle from intake to exhaust strokes. It is also widely recognized that the vorticity field plays a key role in the in-cylinder turbulent field because it influences the air-fuel mixing and flame development process. In this investigation, the in-cylinder vortex structure and vorticity field characteristics are analyzed using the phase-invariant proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method.

Application of the Newly Developed KLSA Model into Optimizing the Compression Ratio of a Turbocharged SI Engine with Cooled EGR

Owing to the stochastic nature of engine knock, determination of the knock limited spark angle (KLSA) is difficult in engine cycle simulation. Therefore, the state-of-the-art knock modeling is mostly limited to either merely predicting knock onset (i.e. auto-ignition of end gas) or combining a simple unburned mass fraction (UMF) model representative of knock intensity (KI). In this study, a newly developed KLSA model, which takes both predictions of knock onset and intensity into account, is firstly introduced. Multiple variables including the excess air ratio, EGR ratio, cylinder pressure and the end gas temperature are included in the knock onset model. Based on the auto-ignition theory of hot spots in end gas, both the energy density and heat release rate in hot spots are taken into consideration in the KI model.

CFD Modeling of Impinging Sprays Under Large Two-Stroke Marine Engine-Like Conditions

To improve the combustion and emission characteristics of the large-bore marine engines, the spray is usually designed as an inter-spray impingement to promote the fuel-air mixing process, which implies frequent droplet collisions. Properly describing the collision dynamics of liquid droplets has been of interest in the field of spray modeling for marine engine applications. In this context, this work attempts to develop an accurate and efficient methodology for modeling impinging sprays under engine-like conditions. Experimental validations in terms of spray penetration and morphology are initially carried out at different operating conditions considering the parametric variations of ambient temperature and pressure, where the measurements are performed on a large-scale constant volume chamber with two symmetrical injectors.

CFD Modeling of Reacting Diesel Sprays with Primary Reference Fuel

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling has many potentials for the design and calibration of modern and future engine concepts, including facilitating the exploration of operation conditions and casting light on the involved physical and chemical phenomena. As more attention is paid to the matching of different fuel types and combustion strategies, the use of detailed chemistry in characterizing auto-ignition, flame stabilization processes and the formation of pollutant emissions is becoming critical, yet computationally intensive. Therefore, there is much interest in using tabulated approaches to account for detailed chemistry with an affordable computational cost. In the present work, the tabulated flamelet progress variable approach (TFPV), based on flamelet assumptions, was investigated and validated by simulating constant-volume Diesel combustion with primary reference fuels - binary mixtures of n-heptane and iso-octane.

Computational Modeling of Diesel Spray Combustion with Multiple Injections

Multiple injection strategies are commonly used in conventional Diesel engines due to the flexibility for optimizing heat-release timing with a consequent improvement in fuel economy and engine-out emissions. This is also desirable in low-temperature combustion (LTC) engines since it offers the potential to reduce unburned hydrocarbon and CO emissions. To better utilize these benefits and find optimal calibrations of split injection strategies, it is imperative that the fundamental processes of multiple injection combustion are understood and computational fluid dynamics models accurately describe the flow dynamics and combustion characteristics between different injection events. To this end, this work is dedicated to the identification of suitable methodologies to predict the multiple injection combustion process.

Drivers have the responsibility to supervise the automated driving system. When they don't agree with the operation behavior of the system, they will interfere with the instructions. Design and Analysis of a Novel Magnetorheological Fluid Dual Clutch for Electric Vehicle Transmission

A novel magnetorheological fluid dual clutch (MRFDC) for electric vehicle transmission is proposed in this article. The structure was based on the MR fluid clutch and traditional dual clutch equipped on internal combustion engine vehicle. Therefore the MRFDC combines the advantages of MR fluid clutch and dual clutch transmission (DCT) to achieve high control accuracy and fast response. The structure of MRFDC was designed by Unigraphics (UG) three-dimensional (3D) modeling software. Then, finite element analysis (FEA) for magnetic field was conducted by ANSYS under different applied currents from 0.1A to 1A with 0.1A space to obtain the relation between the applied current and magnetic field. In this article, Herschel-Bulkley model is used to predict the MR fluid behavior because of the high shear rate of MR fluid.

Design of an Adaptive FO-PID Controller for an In-Wheel-Motor Driven Electric Vehicle

An EV prototype, with all the wheels respectively driven by 4 inwheel motors, is developed, and undergoes a series of practical measurements and road tests. Based on the obtained vehicle parameters, a multi-body dynamics model is built by using SolidWorks and Adams/Car, and then validated by track test data. The virtual prototype is served as the control plant in simulation. An adaptive fractional order PID (A-FO-PID) controller is designed to enhance the handling and stability performance of the EV. Considering the model uncertainties, e.g. the variation in body mass distribution and the consequent change in yaw moment of inertial, a Parameter Self-Adjusting Differential Evolution (PSA-DE) algorithm is adopted for tuning the controller parameters, i.e. KP, KI, KD, λ and μ. As a modification of traditional DE algorithm, the so-called Variance of Population’s Fitness is utilized to evaluate the diversity of the population.

Effects of Injection Rate Profiles on Auto-Ignition in Ignition Quality Tester

Ignition quality tester (IQT) is a standard experimental device to determine ignition delay time of liquid fuels in a controlled environment in the absence of gas exchange. The process involves fuel injection, spray breakup, evaporation and mixing, which is followed by auto-ignition. In this study, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used for prediction of auto-ignition characteristics of diethyl ether (DEE) and ethanol. In particular, the sensitivity of the ignition behavior to different injection rate profiles is investigated. Fluctuant rate profile derived from needle lift data from experiments performs better than square rate profile in ignition delay predictions. DEE, when used with fluctuant injection rate profile resulted in faster ignition, while for ethanol the situation was reversed. The contrasting results are attributed to the difference in local mixing.

Energy Management Optimization for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Real-World Driving Data

Excellent energy consumption performance of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is usually attributed to its hybrid drive mode. However, the factors including vehicle performance, driver behavior and traffic status have been shown to cause unsatisfactory performance. This phenomenon leads to a necessity of study on energy consumption control strategies under real-world driving conditions. This paper proposes a new approach for energy management optimization of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles based on real-world driving data for two purposes. One is for improving the energy consumption of PHEV under real-world driving conditions and the other is for reducing the computational complexity of optimization methods in simulation models. In this process, the paper collected real-world driving record data from 180 drivers within 6 months. Then the principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to extract and define the hidden factors from the initial real-world driving data.

Experiment and Simulation Study on Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Composite Component under Dynamic Three-Point Bending Loading

In the current work, unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber composite hatsection component with two different layups are studied under dynamic three-point bending loading. The experiments are performed at various impact velocities, and the effects of impactor velocity and layup on acceleration histories are compared. A macro model is established with LS-DYNA for a more detailed study. The simulation results show that the delamination plays an important role during dynamic three-point bending test. Based on the analysis with a high-speed camera, the sidewall of hatsection shows significant buckling rather than failure. Without considering the delamination, the current material model cannot capture the post-failure phenomenon correctly. The sidewall delamination is modeled by assumption of larger failure strain together with slim parameters, and the simulation results of different impact velocities and layups match the experimental results reasonably well.
