Handling performance of a vehicle is a key characteristic determining the response of vehicle under different operating scenarios. An insight into these vehicle-handling characteristics at early stage can be extremely useful in the design and development process. Tire characterization and tuning is important and mandatory to scrutinize each functional and individual parameter of tire. Tire force and moment data is having a significant effect in vehicle handling. Segregation of tire parameter, which is contributing vehicle-handling performance, helps to identify and perform optimization for improvisation. The main objective of this study is development and integration optimized 1D tire model into multibody dynamics model of the vehicle to observe various vehicle compliances towards its handling performance target.

Transmission of vibration and noise to the occupants and especially driver contributes significantly to the quality perception of the motor vehicle and eventually, it affects the overall ride comfort. These forces mainly reach to customer through tactile locations, i.e. floor, gearshift lever, steering wheel and seat. Showroom/Parking customer drive pattern of a vehicle evinces the steering system and driver’s seat rail vibration as strikingly linked aspect to evaluate human comfort [1]. This paper deals with the study of vibration at steering wheel and seat affecting human comfort at engine idle rpm with AC ON and OFF condition for passenger vehicles. The transmissibility of engine and radiator induced vibrations has been investigated with respect to modal alignment of steering and seat system.

A Mitigation Strategy for Steering Wobble Phenomenon in Passenger Vehicle

Vehicles have a wide range of resonance band due to design nature & characteristics of its aggregates. First order, vehicle speed dependent, wheel disturbance due to wheel imbalances can result in excitation of different vehicle aggregates. Steering wobble refers specifically to first order road wheel excitation effects, in frequency range of 10-16 Hz, that manifest themselves as significant steering wheel torsional vibrations at highway speeds i.e. at the range of 80 km/h to 120 km/h on smooth roads. The tire, being an elastic body analogous to an array of radial springs, may exhibit variations in stiffness about its circumference; hence, it may vibrate at different frequencies due to wheel imbalance. This paper introduces dynamic steering wobble analysis methodology either using vehicle speed at Discrete (individual speeds) or by Sweep (low to high speed) method to investigate steering wobble in the virtual environment using the full vehicle MBD model.

Brake System Design Calculation for Light Military Tracked Vehicle

Braking system is one of the most important system in the vehicle. In this paper, a general methodology for the design of braking system for a light military tracked vehicle is discussed in detail. It may be considered as a guide for predicting the values of various braking terms (such as brake force, brake torque, system pressure required, pedal force etc.) for the given inputs. The effects on these braking terms due to the variation of the inputs are also analyzed. A complete study of different types of brake actuation system has been done so that the appropriate one can be selected. A methology has been derived for braking system design for tracked vehicle and a program is written for the same.

Global automotive market is noticing an increase in competition from every corner of automobile world since decades and automotive OEMs are on the front line with this competition. Thus, the need of time for OEMs is to develop and maintain the brand image within the market until the launch of new models. Disparate factors within a car distinctly interlinks the customer perception towards a brand image. However, NVH as a factor equally affects the customer decision while choosing a particular brand as it is easily perceivable by any layman customer. NVH fraternity focuses on vibration induced within tactile locations, (i.e. seat, steering wheel, gear knob and floor) in a car. Among all these, Steering wheel and Seat plays a prominent role as it interdigitate directly towards customer comfort. In this detailed study we have focused on Seat as aggregate providing comfort to customer.

Coupled CFD Simulation of Brake Duty Cycle for Brake System Design

Brake system design is intended to reduce vehicle speed in a very short time by ensuring vehicle safety. In the event of successive braking, brake system absorbs most of vehicle’s kinetic energy in the form of heat energy, at the same time it dissipates heat energy to the surrounding. During this short span of time, brake disc surface and rotor attains the highest temperatures which may cross their material allowable temperature limit or functional requirement. High temperatures on rotor disc affects durability & thermal reliability of the brake rotor. Excessive temperature on brake rotors can induce brake fade, disc coning which may result in reduced braking efficiency. To address the complex heat transfer and highly transient phenomenon during successive braking, numerical simulations can give more advantage than physical trials which helps to analyze complex 3D flow physics and heat dissipation from rotors in the vicinity of brake system.

Design Methodology of New Generation Noiseless Antiroll Bar Bushes for Car Suspension

In this paper, design methodology of antiroll bar bush is discussed. Typical antiroll bar bushes have slide or slip mechanism, to facilitate the relative motion between ARB and bush. Inherently, this relative motion causes wear and noise of bush. To eliminate stated failure modes, the next generation bushes have been developed, which are using torsion properties instead of slip function. These bushes are already being used in various vehicles. This paper focuses on developing the simple mathematical model, design approach and optimization of ARB bushes. Also, comparison study is presented exploring, the differences and design criteria's between conventional and new generation anti-roll bar bushes.

In this paper hydropneumatic suspension system design methodology for light military tracked vehicle is discussed in detail. A guide to locate the major impact factor & its effect on the system level design is demonstrated. Spring & damping characteristics of hydropneumatic suspension have significant bearing on the tracked vehicle mobility characteristics. A methodology has been derived to optimize the kinematics of the suspension system by optimizing the load transferring leverage ratio resulting in enhanced system life. The paper also discusses the analytical method used for prediction of spring & damping characteristics and the factors affecting them.

Methodology to Optimize Radiator Fan Induced Steering Wheel Vibration of a Car

Electric radiator fan is a vital component within IC and EV passenger vehicle cooling system. However, due to its operation, it induces noise and in-cab vibration affecting human comfort level. This paper primarily focus on FMS (Fan Motor Shroud) assembly induced steering wheel vibrations in a vehicle under idle + AC ON condition. The entire NVH performance was cascaded from vehicle level to component level to evaluate for high steering wheel vibration and its transfer path analysis. Unit level vibrations study was also carried out using a rigid rig under controlled conditions. Based on FMS vibration analysis, it was observed that fan blade rotating imbalance leads the high vibrations within system. Thus, a balancing method with higher precision and accuracy was used to measure and balance the fan under all operating conditions. Sensitivity analysis had been carried out for fan imbalanced boundary conditions and operating speeds.

Numerical Investigations of Vehicle Climate Control Strategies Impact on Plug-In Electrical Vehicle Battery Range

The range of Plug-In Electric Vehicles (EVs) is highly influenced by the electric power consumed by various sub systems, the major part of the power being used for vehicle climate control strategies in order to ensure an acceptable level of thermal comfort for the passengers. Driving range decreases with low temperatures in particular because cabin heating system requires significant amount of electric power. Range also decreases with high ambient temperatures because of the air conditioning system with electrically-driven compressor. Both thermal systems reduce EV driving range under real life operating cycles, which can be a barrier against market penetration. The structure of a vehicle is capable of absorbing a significant amount of heat when exposed to hot climate conditions. 50-70% of this heat penetrates through the glazing and raises both the internal cabin air temperature and the interior trim surface temperature.

In current scenario, Light Commercial Vehicle segment (7 ton - 9.6 ton) is gradually experiencing a shift in the focus from being just a goods carrier to a vehicle which is developed to take care of driver's safety and comfort in terms of better ergonomics and aesthetics. As compared to their conventional counterparts the new generation Light Commercial Vehicles are better equipped and tuned to cater to the changing needs of the consumers. In view of this, refinement at the sub system level is becoming far more critical. On the same lines, the present work discusses a refined brake system for Light Commercial Vehicles where the conventional pneumatic system is replaced with Dual Air Over Hydraulic (DAOH) to achieve cost and weight advantages without compromising on its performance. However, during the development process, a lot of issues were observed with respect to the braking performance and the brake pedal feel.

This paper deals with specific NVH related issues attributed due to LCA bush stiffness and Brake rotor DTV. While the focus is on the cause of such vibration (judder while braking at 120 kmph), the presentation goes to the root-cause of judder and how various suspension/tire/brake components contribute to the generation/amplification of such vibration. Results are presented for twist blade types of vehicle suspensions, along with procedures that were developed specifically for this study and some of the actual case study. Steering Linkage Induced Vehicle Pull during Straight Line Braking

The vehicle pull (sideways) is a complex outcome of many parameters in an automobile vehicle. This is mainly due to steering, suspension, brake, wheels and chassis parameters. The road conditions like road camber also plays an important role in vehicle pull behavior. All efforts are put in design and manufacturing processes to maintain controlled vehicle pull in normal driving condition. Even though normal vehicle pull seems to be in acceptance limit (subjectively), its intensity increases many folds at the time of harsh braking. In these kind of panic situations where driver firmly holds on the steering wheel, it is expected that the vehicle should stop without deviating too much sideways from its intended straight line path to avoid any kinds of accidents. This work is an outcome of systematic study carried out to understand the root cause of brake pull as a field complaint on current production vehicles and adopting best possible solutions to minimize the brake pull.
