An Adaptive Coupling Methodology for Fast Time-Domain Distributed Heterogeneous Co-Simulation

In the automotive industry well-established different simulation tools targeting different needs are used to mirror the physical behavior of domain specific components. To estimate the overall system behavior coupling of these components is necessary. As systems become more complex, simulation time increases rapidly by using traditional coupling approaches. Reducing simulation time by still maintaining accuracy is a challenging task. Thus, a coupling methodology for co-simulation using adaptive macro step size control is proposed. Convergence considerations of the used algorithms and scheduling of domain specific components are also addressed. Finally, the proposed adaptive coupling methodology is examined by means of a cross-domain co-simulation example describing a hybrid electric vehicle. Considerable advantages in terms of simulation time reduction are presented and the trade-off between simulation time and accuracy is depicted.

Improved Comfort Analysis and Drivability Assessment by the Use of an Extended Power Train Model for Automatic Transmissions

The new generation of automatic transmissions is characterized by a compact and highly efficient design. By the use of a higher overall gear ratio and lightweight components combined with optimal gear set concepts it is possible to improve significantly fuel consumption and driving dynamics. Precise and efficient real time models of the whole power train including models for complex subsystems like the automatic transmission are needed to combine real hardware with virtual models on XiL test rigs. Thereby it's possible to achieve a more efficient product development process optimized towards low development costs by less needed prototypes and shorter development times by pushing front loading in the process. In this paper a new real time model for automatic transmissions including approved models for the torque converter, the lock-up clutch and the torsional damper are introduced. At the current development stage the model can be used for comfort analysis and drivability assessment.

Power Train Model Characteristics for Vibration Analyses – Conflicting Demands in Off Line and HiL Environments

High quality predicting of power train vibration behaviour is desired in the early design stage for efficient vehicle development. Conflicting demands arise, since precise, fast simulation models are required. High precision of the models will allow for the elimination of resonance phenomena for future products, thereby ensuring their comfort for the customers. Fast simulations are becoming increasingly important for linking test environments with virtual prototypes under development. This paper deals with different aspects in these conflicting demands for power train vibration models. First, the paper investigates real-time capable mechanical models and decided in favor of the object-oriented modeling approach “for requirements of Hardware in the Loop” (HiL). This paper takes a closer look at the advantages of the object-oriented approach, the model setup, its validation and the test results.

Robustness and Reliability Enhancement on Retractor Noise Testing, from Development Considerations to Round Robin

Sensing and acting elements to guarantee the locking functions of seat belt retractors can emit noise when the retractor is subjected to externally applied vibrations. For these elements to function correctly, stiffness, inertia and friction needs to be in tune, leading to a complex motion resistance behavior, which makes it delicate to test for vibration induced noise. Requirements for a noise test are simplicity, robustness, repeatability, and independence of laboratory and test equipment. This paper reports on joint development activities for an alternative test procedure, involving three test laboratories with different equipment. In vehicle observation on parcel shelf mounted retractors, commercially available test equipment, and recent results from multi-axial component tests [1], set the frame for this work. Robustness and reliability of test results is being analyzed by means of sensitivity studies on several test parameters.

Simulation of Sound Transmission through Automotive Turbochargers

The use of turbochargers for production cars has been increasing due to the current trend of engine downsizing. Acoustically, it acts as a damper of the pressure pulsations from the engine that propagate through the intake and exhaust system. This effect is referred to as the passive acoustic properties of a turbocharger. The aim of this paper is to investigate the passive acoustic properties of an automotive turbocharger compressor and turbine and to develop and verify an acoustical model of the turbocharger. To investigate the acoustic properties such as the transmission loss and the transfer function through these elements under different operating conditions, acoustic two-port measurements were performed on a turbocharger test rig at different flow conditions.

Stability Analysis of a Two-Voltage Vehicle Electrical System Based on Co-Simulation

In the automotive industry a strong trend towards electrification is determined. It offers the possibility of a more flexible actuation of the vehicle systems and can therefore reduce the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions for modern vehicles. This is not only valid for typical drive train components, e.g., for hybrid or pure electric vehicles, but also for chassis components and auxiliaries like power-steering pump or air-conditioning compressor. However, a further electrification is limited by the 14V power net of conventional passenger cars. The high electric currents required by new/additional electrical components may lead to increased line losses and instability in the vehicle electrical system. With the introduction of a medium voltage level (≺60V) these problems can be circumvented.

Vehicle Thermal Management Simulation Method Integrated in the Development Process from Scratch to Prototype

In order to meet current and future emission and CO2 targets, an efficient vehicle thermal management system is one of the key factors in conventional as well as in electrified powertrains. Furthermore the increasing number of vehicle configurations leads to a high variability and degrees of freedom in possible system designs and the control thereof, which can only be handled by a comprehensive tool chain of vehicle system simulation and a generic control system architecture. The required model must comprise all relevant systems of the vehicle (control functionality, cooling system, lubrication system, engine, drive train, HV components etc.). For proper prediction with respect to energy consumption all interactions and interdependencies of those systems have to be taken into consideration, i.e. all energy fluxes (mechanical, hydraulically, electrical, thermal) have to be exchanged among the system boundaries accordingly.

Vibration Comfort Control for HEV Based on Machine Learning

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with a power-split system offer a variety of possibilities in reduction of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Power-split systems use a planetary gear sets to create a strong mechanical coupling between the internal combustion engine, the generator and the electric motor. This concept offers rather low oscillations and therefore passive damping components are not needed. Nevertheless, during acceleration or because of external disturbances, oscillations which are mostly influenced by the ICE, can still occur which leads to a drivability and performance downgrade. This paper proposes a design of an active damping control system which uses the electric motor to suppress those oscillations instead of handling them within the ICE control unit. The control algorithm is implemented as part of an existing hybrid controller without any additional hardware introduced.
