A Diesel Exhaust Filter System for Industrial Diesel Forklifts

Diesel powered vehicles are characterized by two distinctives, of particulate, sensed by sight, and odor, sensed by smell. Dramatically reducing these distinctives would result in a “clean diesel”. A joint program of Yellow Freight System, Inc. (YFS) and the author's employer (DCI) has addressed one distinctive (particulate) and has resulted in an exhaust filtering system for the diesel forklift trucks YFS use to move freight at their terminals. This paper covers design, installation, and testing of the system to filter the particulate emissions emanating from these forklifts. The filters, designed to operate for one programmed maintenance (PM) cycle, are then cleaned in off-board equipment and returned to service for another cycle. All filter materials utilized are compatible with the 200°C normal maximum operating temperature, although short excursions to 260°C have not been detrimental.

The new Series 600 John Deere Disks are designed for optimum disking performance in primary and secondary tillage conditions. The tandem design retains the performance characteristics of double offset configurations due to an exclusive rolling disk middlebreaker. Welded main and wing frames feature large square and rectangular tubes which are manufactured on common weld fixtures, providing a strong “family” appearance as well as reduced factory setups and inventories. These disks provide farmer-customers with many options and features necessary to operate in varying soil types and conditions while achieving level disking performance and uniform cutting action.

A New Method Development to Predict Brake Squeal Occurrence

A new method to predict brake squeal occurrence was developed by MSC under contract to Ford Motor Company. The results indicate that the stability characteristics of this disc brake assembly are governed mainly by the frictional properties between the pads and rotor. The stability is achieved when the friction coefficient of the pads is decreasing as the contact force increases. Based on the results, a stable brake system can be obtained without changing the brake structure by incorporating the appropriate frictional coefficient in the brake system. The method developed here can be also used as a tool to test the quality of any brake design in the early design stage.

A new type of screw pump has inherent design features (e.g. balanced design, low bearing loads, wear-adjustable rotors, low rubbing loads, …) which may allow efficient, reliable, and maintainable operation in numerous applications, particularly for pumping low-viscosity fluids. Initial tests on an 87 gal/min prototype pumping lubricating oil at pressures up to 500 lb/in2 and speeds up to 1800 rev/min achieved good performance with little wear over 3400 hours of operations. Performance projections indicate volumetric efficiencies of 50 percent should be reached using the existing prototype pumping 1200 lb/in2 water in one stage.

A Power Distribution Panel Designed for Flexible Manufacturing Techniques

In today's vehicle, the electrical power distribution panel becomes the circuit protection, relay, and wire management center for the entire electrical system. This paper describes a new 3-D electrical distribution concept and presents a supporting design. The proposed design establishes circuits for connecting power inputs, outputs, and top loaded pluggable components by modifying a standardized flat conductive grid. The grid includes a repeating pattern of connecting rings and radial spokes. These spokes define circuit paths extending from and interconnecting each ring. At the final stages of manufacturing, the required circuit paths are created on a single sheet by selectively removing certain spokes. Multiple sheets are stacked with insulating barriers located between each layer. An interconnection between layers is realized by selectively positioning connecting pins through the ring nodes and interconnecting circuits defined on successive layers.

Adaptive Base-Flaps Under Variable Cross-Wind

Road vehicles usually operate within windy environments. The combination of typical wind distributions and vehicle speeds, imposes on such vehicles aerodynamic yaw angles, β, which are often almost uniform up to 6° and relevant up to 14°. Drag saving devices are often optimized for zero cross-wind scenarios, minimizing drag only around these design conditions. This work presents the drag saving increase that an adaptive system can provide over a classic boat-tail. In the experimental set up employed, two flaps are located at the rear lateral edges of an Ahmed body and respectively set at angles θ1 and θ2 with respect to the model. To evaluate the efficacy of different flap positioning strategies under cross-wind, the model was tested in a wind tunnel, , with and without flaps at yaw angles β = 0°, 3°, 6° or 9°. The flap sizes tested, δ, were 9% or 13% of the body width. For each β and δ, the maps of drag against the two flap angles were obtained.

Some communication buses are too powerful and expensive for simple digital on/off operations such as activating lights, wipers, windows, etc. For these applications the LIN bus is currently the most promising communication protocol across the world's automotive industry. This paper addresses a study using LIN (Local Interconnect Network) for Ford South America vehicles. This will propose a new electrical architecture designed with LIN network, which will be replacing the conventional rear and front lights cables in Trucks, where other higher protocols, such as CAN, are not cost effective. LIN is a new low cost serial communication system intended to be used for distributed electronic system that will allow gaining further quality enhancement and cost reduction on cables, connectors and switches.

International terminal facilities at Los Angeles International Airport have been inundated by a rising tide of air travellers which grew by 100 percent during the past five years. Expansion programs have started easing congestion and delays. To further lessen congestion around the international satellite, six aircraft parking pads were added in 1981 to accommodate arriving aircraft when gate positions are not available. Several newly acquired high capacity airfield buses shuttle passengers over a distance of approximately two miles between the remote parking pads and the terminal.

This SAE Standard provides the minimum requirements for high power two conductor jumper cable plug and receptacle for truck-trailer jumper cable systems. It includes the test procedures, design, and performance requirements. This document covers receptacles rated at more than 30A (Ampere) up to and including 150A and is intended for a single circuit with one power conductor and one common return conductor. Single conductor high current connectors are not recommended for future designs because of inadequate ground return through 5th wheel / king pin. Cable size selection is to be made by the vehicle OEM for specific applications and the specific voltage drop requirements of those applications. This SAE Standard covers two variants of high power two conductor connections: a heavy duty version with horizontally aligned pins, typically for lift-gate battery charging and a medium duty version with vertically aligned pins: typically for loads such as power tarpaulins.
