From Clean Air Act to recommended practice—the evolution of SAE J2008

In 1990 the Clean Air Act called for automotive manufacturers to “provide...instructions for making emissions-related diagnostics and repair.” SAE then formed a committee to focus on meeting this call to action. The mission of SAE J2008 quickly came to encompass the total vehicle under the premise that all aspects of the automobile effect emissions in some way. In 1997, the mission underwent another change. SAE began work with the Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) to incorporate their T2008 standard and create a single standard integrating both automotive and trucking industry practices. In October 1998, SAE J2008 became a recommended practice standardizing service information for the entire vehicle.
