2011 Baja Birmingham Final Results

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 20, 2011

2011 Baja SAE Birmingham

The 2011 Baja SAE Competition season started off calm enough with registration on Thursday April 14th.  But Friday was anything but calm with over 5 inches of rain, high winds and tornado watches in the area the day was slightly shortened due to the inclement weather.

This year’s first event of the season began at Stony Lonesome’s OHV Park near Birmingham, Alabama. The Alabama SAE section along with University of Alabama – Birmingham (UAB) hosted the 2011 Baja SAE Birmingham competition with the core organizing committee consisting of experienced Baja SAE organizers from the UCF/Ocala Florida events and the RIT events along with some additional support from committee members from the Auburn event.

The entire 4 day competition was held at Stony Lonesome OHV Park. The event kicked off on Thursday and Friday with registration and technical and safety inspections. Saturday began the dynamic events featuring land maneuverability, suspension/traction courses, a hill climb, acceleration, and a “W” shaped water maneuverability.

All was ready to go until over 5 inches of rain fell on Friday making the dynamic courses a little more difficulty for Saturday and the endurance course on Sunday. It was difficult for the volunteers and the organizing committee to try and get the course back in shape but they managed to work hard in making adjustments where necessary. Working from daylight and well past dark, the group did their best to get the courses back in order. Hats go off to everyone involved with this competition including the technical inspectors who did double duty this past week, Stony Lonesome OHV Park staff and all the UAB volunteers.

The overall winners were Tennessee Tech University taking first place, Universite Laval in second, and the hometown team of University of Alabama- Birmingham (UAB) taking home third. Rounding out the top ten were Universite de Sherbrooke, Ohio Northern University, Ecole De Technologie Superieure, Queen’s University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech and Cornell University.

SAE would like to especially thank Adam Hussemann from Honda and Tina Oliver from the University of Alabama Birmingham for their outstanding dedication, work and effort as organizing chairpersons for this competition. SAE would also like to thank all the  wonderful volunteers that worked so hard digging, shoveling and getting the track in back in order after the series of bad weather that we faced on Friday, without these individuals, the events would never have taken place. Special thanks go out to Barry Powe with the Stony Lonesome OHV Park for all his help in the past six months, and especially onsite in making our event possible.

SAE International would also like to thank our corporate sponsors Briggs & Stratton, Solidworks, Honda, and Polaris for not only their support but also for the volunteers that were provided to make these events such a success for our students! And most importantly to the students who participate and provide feedback on how we can improve in future competitions.
