2012 NASA Systems Engineering Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Jan. 5, 2012 - To all teams participating in the 2012 SAE Aero Design® competitions:

NASA would like to call your attention to the NASA Systems Engineering Award competition, held in conjunction with the SAE Aero Design West and Aero Design East events.

The NASA competition provides an opportunity for SAE Aero Design teams to obtain first-hand experience applying NASA’s best engineering practices; manage their efforts for best performance, cost, schedule, and risk; and interact with professional NASA engineers.

In addition, the winning submission at the West and East competitions will each earn a $750 cash award.

The rules for the competition are found at: http://www.aeronautics.nasa.gov/sae_guidelines.htm

The rules call for submission of two reports describing the application of systems engineering practices to the development of the teams’ entries. The first report describes the team’s approach to managing performance, risk, cost, and schedule to meet the SAE Aero Design requirements. The second report, submitted at the flying sites, is the As Built report, which describes the rationale for changes between the initial design and the final vehicle.

We encourage your team to participate in this application of best engineering practices and excellent learning experience.
