Kansas Jayhawks Finish First!

WARRENDALE, Pa., July 9, 2012 - University of Kansas – Lawrence was awarded the 1st Place Overall finish at the 2012 Formula SAE Lincoln competition.  Usually a frontrunner at the Formula SAE competitions finishing in the top ten; this is the first championship captured by Jayhawks Motorsports team in the school’s program history.

The 2012 Formula SAE Lincoln competition was an inaugural event for Lincoln, Nebraska; SAE having relocated from its previous site in Fontana, California. New with this event site was also SAE’s partnerships with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National office staff and local sponsors Green Plains, Kawasaki, and Nucor Steel.

The event site did not lend for typical amenities provided at other competitions such as electric in the paddocks; a small trade-off in return was 90 acres of asphalt which allowed for larger team paddock spaces, dynamic event courses (autocross and endurance) to be laid out and available for walking a full day prior to events and new this year a short autocross styled practice course in addition to the traditional practice pad. Registrations for this competition still met the competition limit of 80 cars plus one. SAE International registered onsite teams representing college and universities from Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico and United States.

All the static and dynamic events took place starting Thursday, June 21st with Cost, Design and Presentation judging. Taking first place in Cost receiving the SAE Cost Award was Car #73, University of Michigan – Dearborn with the highest score of 78.44 points.

After a full day of design judging; the judges invited nine teams to participate in Design Finals. Those teams were:
Car #21, University of Washington
Car #69, University of Kansas - Lawrence
Car #28, University of Texas - Arlington
Car #79, Michigan State University
Car #71, Missouri University of Science and Technology
Car #67, McGill University
Car #85, Centro Universitario Da FEI
Car #25, Texas A & M University - College Station
Capturing the first place finish and opportunity for one day of K&C testing at Goodyear’s facility in Akron, OH was Car #21, University of Washington.

Receiving first place honors in the SAE Presentation event was Car # 3 University of Wisconsin – Madison. Wisconsin also impressed first time competition sponsors Nucor Steel who decided to add a monetary value to the award presented onsite. Participating in the Presentation Highlights for public review along with first place finisher Wisconsin were second and third place finishers; Car #28, University of Texas - Arlington and Car #69, University of Kansas – Lawrence.

For those cars that passed all three steps of Technical Inspection the fun of driving began Friday with Acceleration and Skid Pad events in the morning and Autocross in the afternoon. With a sunny day and temperatures in the high 80s, Car #11, Universidade Estadual de Campinas completed a successful acceleration with the fastest time of 4.047 seconds. With a successful run in Skid Pad, Car #71, Missouri University of Science and Technology clinched first place with their time of 4.997 seconds.

In the afternoon teams completed their runs for the SAE Autocross; crossing the starting line were 49 cars. Finishing in first place with a clean run and fastest time of 53.462 seconds was Car #71, Missouri University of Science and Technology. Finishing close behind in second was longtime rival Car#69, University of Kansas – Lawrence also with a clean run but slower time of 55.025 seconds. Rounding out third place was Car #82 Rochester Institute of Technology with a close time of 56.213 seconds.

The finishing order for the Autocross determined for the most part the run order (with a little team shuffling) of Saturday’s Endurance event. To increase the excitement level leading up to the Award Ceremony sponsored by Nucor Steel, SAE International continued with the inverted run order running cars from slowest to fastest.

With a slight delay on Saturday morning due to the need to wait out a passing thunderstorm; the event started with the track declared wet, then shifted to damp. Cars that started after the lunch break ran on a completely dry track. Fifty cars took the green start of endurance with only 24 teams finishing; unfortunately only 20 teams finished within the allowed max time.

Placing first in SAE’s Endurance was Car #69, University of Kansas – Lawrence with a total time of 1328.174 seconds over 19 laps; an adjusted time for having hit one cone. Coming in second with an adjusted time of 1365.374 seconds due to hitting three cones was Car #25, Texas A & M University - College Station. And in third place Car #28, University of Texas – Arlington with a clean run time of 1368.279 seconds.
