SAE International Honors William Attard with the Max Bentele Award for Engine Technology Innovation

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 10, 2013 - Dr. William Attard, Head of Engine Research for MAHLE Powertrain North America, will be honored with the SAE International Max Bentele Award for Engine Technology Innovation during the Awards Ceremony at SAE 2013 World Congress held in Detroit. The ceremony will be held Tuesday, April 16th, at 6 p.m. in Cobo Center.

Established in 2001, this award recognizes an SAE International member whose work has furthered innovation in the manufacture, design and improvement of engine technology for ground, air or space vehicles. The award highlights major contributions through a new idea, concept, innovation or application, which provides a recognized improvement in engine technology.

The award honors Max Bentele for his contributions to the field of mobility engines and his encouragement for others to innovate and promote advances in the area.

Dr. Attard completed three degrees at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His previous experience has involved Formula 1 and Touring Car (V8 Supercar) engine development. He has authored more than 30 technical papers related to advanced combustion systems, alternative fuels, turbocharging, downsizing, and engine design. Dr. Attard was previously awarded the 2006 SAE Max Bentele Award for Engine Technology Innovation for his PhD work under Professor Harry Watson, which focused on two-cylinder engine downsizing. He has been an active member within SAE Australasia and SAE International since 2001.  His current SAE International activities involve chairing several technical paper sessions, acting as an associate editor of the SAE International “Journal of Engines,” judging Formula SAE® and Clean Snowmobile Challenge™ events, and involvement in the Small Engine Technology and University Program Committees.
