SAE Foundation Hosts Annual Celebration Dinner Honoring GM's Mary T. Barra - GM Announces Donation of First Production Vehicle to Support SAE Programming

WARRENDALE, Pa., May 23, 2013 - The SAE Foundation, the charitable arm of SAE International, celebrated its Annual Celebration Dinner on May 22 at the GM Technical Center in Detroit, MI. The evening’s theme, “The Future STEMs from You!” celebrates the SAE Foundation’s individual and collective efforts to improve the state of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for America’s students.

The event brought together corporate sponsors, industry leaders, donors, volunteers, teachers and students who are involved in SAE programming. Acknowledgements were given to automotive industry leaders including Mary T. Barra, GM Senior Vice President of Global Development. 

Barra was presented with the SAE Foundation’s “Industry Leadership Award.”  Barra is responsible for the design, engineering, program management and quality for General Motors’ vehicles around the world.

“This award is a great tribute to the men and women of General Motors and our long-standing partnership with visionary organizations like SAE,” said Barra. “As an industry, we must continue to address the challenge of STEM education by supporting organizations like the SAE Foundation, which provides children with the skills and resources necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

In addition, the evening reception honored Kaustav Sinha, Associate Scientist, Dow Chemical and Adam Timmons, Technical Specialist, Chrysler Group LLD, with the Stefan Pischinger Young Industry Leadership Award, sponsored by FEV. The award recognizes young men and women in the engineering community, ages 35 and under, who have made significant accomplishments and who show potential for leadership growth in the automotive industry.

Neil Schilke, former General Director of Engineering, Corporate Staffs, GM, was the 2013 recipient of the Donald W. Ableson Award for Visionary Leadership. Schilke was recognized due to his leadership within the SAE Foundation organization and for his significant contributions to improving STEM education and advancing the SAE mission.

The SAE Foundation also announced The GM Foundation as winners of the 3rd annual Gordon Millar Award, The award, which is sponsored by AVL, is given in special recognition of an individual or organization that best demonstrates continuous philanthropic support of the SAE Foundation Mission to encourage and increase student participation and achievement in STEM education.

Barra also announced the donation of the first production 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport, including a performance driving school package. The vehicle will be auctioned through Barrett-Jackson Auction Company later this year, with proceeds supporting the SAE Foundation's STEM educational programs.

 “The celebration dinner was a great success.  I’d personally like to thank everyone that has supported our STEM programming initiatives, including the GM Foundation,” said Lori Gatmaitan, Director, SAE Foundation. “To date more than four million students have participated in our K-12 and collegiate programs in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces and territories.”
